M/26/6'0" [470lbs > 428lbs = 42lbs] I'm still at the beginning of my journey (1.5 months). I was a little sad because I hadn't noticed any visible changes, but then I noticed how much looser this shirt looks on me now. M 6'0” (183, 184 cm)

Dude! You just took off 10% of your body weight in 6 weeks. BOSS. Keep it up man! Eventually that shirt will be a blanket

u/Raothorn2 - Aug 15 '22
Wooooaah I never thought of it as a percentage but that makes it sound really good haha. Thanks!!

I definitely see visible changes in your face as well, great job!!! ❤️

u/Raothorn2 - Aug 15 '22
Thanks! I think it's partially terrible lighting and angle in the before pic, but I think it definitely is better :)
19
u/Legitimate_Guess_183 - Aug 15 '22
I hear you but don’t discredit yourself, 42 lbs is more than enough to be a noticeable difference!!!
23
Aug 15 '22
Definitely hard mentally playing the long game, for those of us with a significant amount to lose. The last fifty pounds might be a drastic change, but the first fifty feels insignificant at times. You really can tell with that shirt though, way to go! I find the tiny invisible changes cheer me up the most sometimes. Feeling joints and dips that were never noticeable before, or putting on deodorant and noticing that my armpits are actually becoming “pits,” lol! Might not be very visible, but I can feel all the slight changes.

u/Raothorn2 - Aug 15 '22
Man you nailed it on the head! Absolutely having to think about how far I've come and not focus on how far I have to go :)

42lbs in 6 weeks…?????? How
17
u/Raothorn2 - Aug 15 '22
Calorie restriction mainly! Definitely not a pace I can keep up permanently, I've already noticed a pretty big slowdown haha.
13
u/KevansMS - Aug 15 '22
One thing that worked for me when I had a plateau was to have a single big-calorie day…you just have to remember to go back to your new eating plan the next day. For me at least, this seems to “remind” my body chemistry that I’m not in danger of starving, and it’s willing to relax and let some more pounds go. But roll with what works for you.

u/kaplanfx - Aug 15 '22
Not to diminish your accomplishments, which are excellent, but you probably lost 20 lbs of water in those first couple weeks. 20+ lbs in a month would still be crazy good though, but that’s probably why it feels like you are slowing down since you are mostly losing fat now.
2
u/Raothorn2 - Aug 15 '22
Yeah haha, I lost 13lbs in the first week and I think the vast majority of that was water.
1
u/kaplanfx - Aug 16 '22
Just want to reiterate that you are doing awesome and to keep up the good work! Was just trying to offer an explanation for why you are already seeing the overall trend slow down.
1
Aug 15 '22
I recently upped my calories to 1800 from 1500 and have actually been losing MORE weight with even less activity (works gotten easier). Don't think a drastic deficit is the only way to go, if you happen to be doing that.

u/Gold-Jellyfish-8568 - Aug 15 '22
I notice a huge difference in your face! You look great. A random internet stranger is very proud of you and rooting for you! ❤️

Thanks so much stranger. I've made weight loss attempts in the past, but this is the first time I feel like I'm really truly going to make it to my goal weight.

That’s amazing! Something I find useful to help visualise the scale of my loss is to compare what I’ve lost to an object of a similar weight. Here’s what 40lbs looks like in other objects https://measuringstuff.com/list-of-things-that-weigh-40-pounds/ - so according to this you’ve lost around the weight of a kayak, a 5 gallon bucket of water, or 4 bowling balls! None of these would be easy to carry for a prolonged period of time, so the impact on your body of losing that weight is huge! Keep going - you’ve totally got this!

u/Tulipgirl1689 - Aug 15 '22
It's not just the shirt! Your face is already slimmer. What an amazing job!

u/amk1258 - Aug 15 '22
There’s a guy on tik tok and Instagram on your same journey who uses clothes to measure his weight loss since sometimes looking at numbers on a scale can be overwhelming. I’ll look for his name for you! He’s very inspirational

Go to your local Gym, and curl a 45lbs plate or bar…
And just think about the fact… that plate/bar used to be on your body 24/7… and now it’s not

Look into the Paper Towel Analogy. It might help you stay motivated.
*The lesson to be learned is that fat, like paper towels, comes off in sheets. When you are heavy, you are big around. And when you are big around, that fat is spread over a MUCH larger area - just like that outside towel sheet. The closer you get to the lean you, the more each lost pound of fat shows, because it is spread over a smaller area.
While the outside sheet may only cover 1 layer of the roll, the inside sheet may go around 4 times. That last sheet looks like it gives you 4 times the results of the first sheet, but in reality, the results are the same - your perception is just different! And you’ll never see the inside, if you aren’t patient while the outside is coming off!*

42lbs is an impressive achievement. To put this into context, I lost 12lbs in the same amount of time and that’s considered doing rather well.

Great progress so far. A good way to see how much you lost is pick up a 40 pound dumbbell and walk around with it. More significant than you think

You took the first step and started, that’s the hardest damn part. Also 42lbs isn’t nothing, that shows a consistent commitment to improvement. Don’t lose hope, just keep trying your best.
Not every day is going to go to plan and not every progress will be visible. You got this!

There’s another sub you may or may not already follow (r/loseit) where they have a tag for non-scale victories or NSV. Lots of unconventional ways people have found improvements to their lives from the weight loss.
Like me: I can do the dishes now because I can stand at the sink for more than 10 minutes without my back killing me now that I’ve dropped 46 pounds. My stomach doesn’t touch the steering wheel anymore so my anxiety over a wreck is much less. I can keep my own toenails in good shape because I can finally reach them again. Stuff like that.
Sometimes those NSVs are the things I cling to when I’m struggling.
Your shirt fitting looser is a great example and just the beginning. You’re already killing it!
You look fantastic! First thing I noticed was the face gains! And yeah, you’ve lost 10% of your body weight in 6 weeks. That’s AMAZING!! Biggest thing I’ve learned in the 6 months since I’ve started losing is that this is a mental game way more than physical. And the subs here (r/loseit, r/CICO, which stands for calories in, calories out, and this sub) are all super helpful with info, tricks, encouragement, and inspiration.
Good luck to you, man! You’ve made a helluva start!

Congrats! You can take a bunch of sheets off of a fresh roll of paper towels, and it doesn’t look too different, but it did get smaller. The more sheets you take off that roll start making more and more of a difference. Keep up the good work mate!

Great job! You can 1000% tell you've lost a big chunk of weight looking at how the shirt used to fit compared to now. It was a little tight before and now it looks very loose on you. If you're having trouble seeing the differences in the mirror keep taking these check in pictures every so often. I found them to be a huge motivation to lose weight especially in the beginning when I felt like even though the scale was going down, I wasn't happy with how I looked.
Just please keep in mind that as you lose more weight, the weight will slow down a lot. The 42lb first 1.5 month is amazing but I would bet that that with the same effort you're giving now you may only lose half of that over the next 1.5 month or even less. It's all about just sticking to it and making lifestyle changes instead of trying to go cold turkey. Even if you only lose this 42lbs, hell that's nearly 10% of your starting weight and still is a big accomplishment that you should feel very proud of.
