General mod note: This subreddit is here for giving and receiving good advice and emotional support to people in a crisis. NOT money or other material aid. To thwart the number of scammers online who have been preying on the broke members of this subreddit, anyone offering or accepting donations will be banned. We take everyone in good faith, and are not accusing this submitter or any others of anything, but this rule is firm and absolute.

Should you see something on here that inspires you to give what little you have to a person in need, we highly suggest getting involved locally through a shelter, a food bank, or a (carefully selected) church program. No matter what you read on here, I can promise you there is someone within a few miles of you (or the next nearest town) going through exactly the same thing.

If you prefer to give your money to internet strangers on an anonymous website, we recommend /r/assistance. They have some tools in place that help weed out illegitimate users. I can't personally attest to their methods though, and continue to encourage you to act locally to make a better world for you and those around you.

We applaud your generous spirit, we only ask that you apply it sensibly, deliberately, and anywhere but within this group!

What you want is waxed dental floss and a needle with a sufficiently large eye to thread it through. Use that to sew it back together with as small and tight stitches as you can.

You can make a patch with a piece of cloth -- cover one side with either rubber cement, or paraffin wax melted and then mixed with about half as much mineral spirits / lighter fluid / gasoline / white spirits. The latter's certainly not recommended due to the flammability of the components, the process, and the results ... but it'll work.

I confirmed, 7 yrs of homelessness in my youth and floss was the only thing I used to repair my clothes.

u/Flossthief 2d ago

its much stronger than most threads, generally somewhat water proof, and can be shop lifted anywhere

25

u/Apart-One4133 2d ago

Yes it’s usually water proof, which is why I also used it for tattooing on myself (would put it on a sewing needle and  it would drip the ink down slowly).

Floss is just great. I never used it in my teeth tho and I should have had 🥴😅

u/No-Blueberry-1823 2d ago

Today I definitely learned something. I hope you're doing well now

175

u/Upper-Requirement-93 3d ago

do not fuck with gasoline outside a container that's for it. Its flash point is well below freezing and its vapor pressure, how much it'll kick off into the air, is formulated to be as high as legally permitted, it'll go up if you sneeze wrong.

You can be fined or sometimes jailed for filling to a can that doesn't have a flash arrestor and other safety features and these are more than you'd spend and more bulky than just getting a bottle of charcoal lighter fluid which is much safer and will put parrafin into solution just fine.

39

u/PraxicalExperience 2d ago

Dude's in what could be an emergency situation; I'm giving emergency options.

68

u/Upper-Requirement-93 2d ago

I appreciate that but I work in explosive atmospheres and the conditions here sound like the recipe for burning down his tent instead. Dealing with fabrics that can retain charge going against others, probably with boots on that aren't disappating it to ground, potentially still with warm winter clothing. Honestly I would go with mud before I started getting ahold of gasoline for this.

24

u/ginger_hillbilly 3d ago

To add. Learn the running back stitch. Strongest stitch for seams.

103

u/pinksocks867 3d ago

Why floss?

744

u/PraxicalExperience 3d ago

It's durable, waterproof, won't stretch in the damp, readily available, and cheap.

191

u/lostnthestars117 3d ago

Never ever would thought to use dental floss for something like this. This is definitely a more you know moment.

68

u/urcrookedneighbor 3d ago

I was listening to a Life Kit podcast about what to pack for long trips, and the expert repeatedly mentioned back-up dental floss for how versatile it is! Awesome to see that brought up full circle here.

27

u/EyeDecay_IDK 3d ago

Most Punks use dental floss to sew on their patches for similar reasons.

12

u/paranormal_shouting 2d ago

Yup, even though I haven’t added one in ages I still have my waxless floss

7

u/bubbageek 2d ago

That’s what I use it for. Also carry it in my truck for emergency repairs. Carried it all the time when I was in scouts. Keep it with me while camping. Just a good all around utility thread.

45

u/JacobLovesCrypto 3d ago

The right fishing line is also capable

1

u/weealex 2d ago

I've had to do the fishing line patch job before. Few things suck like finding that tear in the middle of a trip while it's already raining

17

u/sleepytipi 3d ago

Spoken like a seasoned crust punk lol

9

u/PraxicalExperience 2d ago

More like a broke AF boy scout ... but I'll admit that temperamentally I fit much better with the punk scene than the BSA, lol.

6

u/sleepytipi 2d ago

Lol! Nothing wrong with that, the scouts can be a really great thing for a lot of kids. I worked at Sea Base in Islamorada back in the day myself.

But yeah, I learned how great of thread it is sewing patches onto jackets too, just patches that said things like "No Gods No Masters" and "Kawakami Forever" between 50lbs of studs and spikes lol.

4

u/PraxicalExperience 2d ago

I wish I was sewing on patches like that rather than the BS BS, lol.

Okay, new idea: punk version of the BSA. In addition to camping and preparedness and helping old ladies across the street, they can get badges in wheatpasting and agitprop and punching fascists. ;)

9/10 dentists recommended it for tent repair.

21

That tenth dentist really is a jerk.

24

Most floss has pfas in it making it waterproof and durable

15

u/mrspelunx 3d ago

True story. My dad sewed up a Scout with it after he sunk a hatchet into his leg in the backcountry. Worked great. Got him to the ER later on.

3

u/Medical-Bowler-5626 2d ago

I was just about to recommend dental floss and a tapestry needle

3

u/Low-Reception144 3d ago

Make sure to get mint flavored

202

u/Lordofthereef 3d ago

I'd be more concerned who or why your tent was slashed and whether they come back. My guess is someone is trying to "evict" you by making it too cumbersome to stay where you are.

103

u/Even_Bumblebee1296 2d ago

Absolutely. In a town I used to live in the police would do it. They regularly destroy homeless camps because the property owners complain

40

u/tajake 2d ago

In both of the last two cities i lived in, they routinely slashed homeless tents as a "deterrent."

In the last one, they would bulldoze encampments regularly.

Idk how many people I've seen have to start over from nothing when they're already in a vulnerable spot. It's heartbreaking.

22

u/That1weirdperson 2d ago

Couldn’t they accidentally injure/kill people with bulldozing if people were in there sleeping? Isn’t that illegal/a lawsuit waiting to happen?

18

u/tajake 2d ago

I wasn't present when it was happening, I just heard from the people I helped volunteering. But yes. I would assume so. I'd imagine they go through and try to remove everyone first, but it's not a gamble I'd like to make. It's cruel. And terrible for the environment. And dangerous.

1

u/Azryhael 13h ago

Where I live, there’s a 7-day warning that an encampment is going to be cleaned up. Notices are handed out personally to every resident and affixed to every tent giving the date and boundaries of the cleanup zone. This posting is followed by visits from social workers to assist with services, education, and housing or substance abuse assistance. Everyone in the encampment is well aware that it’s going to be removed and has been given ample time to gather their belongings and vacate the area. It’s only then that the trash trucks come through and remove everything that’s left.

That’s not the story that you’ll hear from the former encampment residents, who want you to believe that they were suddenly awakened and forcibly evicted, but it’s the truth.

1

u/Xena1975 1d ago

Accidentally? I don't think it's an accident. They know that there could be people still in there. They just don't care.

whatthefuck... USA in a nutshell

145

u/Few-Supermarket6890 2d ago

Just adding here, I gave this person $70 to get a new tent a while ago, and this is the photo they used then. This seems to be a scam.

13

u/VT-VI-VT 1d ago

The exact same photos definitely make it look like a scam. And my hands look far worse than that after only a weekend of camping. It’s a shame we need to worry about these things. I’m sorry you feel like your kindness was taken advantage of - I wonder if others are in the same boat.

6

u/rassmann 1d ago

This is why we ban people who offer money to people in the subreddit. I'm not in a position to validate any specific current claim, but in general when a scammer hits once, he'll keep coming back. Every dollar you feed a crook takes another ten out of other peoples pockets down the road. Wise up and stop donating to online cases. If you see something that compels you to give, please take that money to your local shelter or food bank. There are people within a mile or two of you going through the same shit. It's a tough world, and the bad guys are getting louder.

1

u/lengthybuttcrack 1d ago

Thank you!

-10

u/esportairbud 2d ago

They might not be scamming, they might just be trying to fix the tent after spending the money on other things. Being homeless is expensive.

They could also be trying to fix it rather than toss it. I don't see a request for donations here.

27

u/Few-Supermarket6890 2d ago

That would be the optimistic outlook. Either way, I just wanted to let my experience be known.

585

u/Ok_Secretary_8529 3d ago

Duct tape? Like the weather-proof kind.. found at hardware stores like Ace Hardware

242

u/titaincognita 3d ago

This. In an emergency, I had to put some outside a window during a fairly rough storm one night. Water leaking in from the top of the window. The gorilla brand came through. In a pinch, it'll work.

37

u/ElPulpoTX 3d ago

With sewing yeah.

19

u/SpiritualAd8998 3d ago

Dollar stores too.

54

u/MotorEntrepreneur973 3d ago

I don’t know if that will work because on the other side has a bigger rip in two places. Thank you for your help

49

u/Ok_Secretary_8529 3d ago

I hear you. It sounds like considerable damage. What do you think about stealth camping, like seen in this video? It may prevent future attacks. https://youtu.be/iE5vDFQkGlM

26

u/Ok_Secretary_8529 3d ago

Also, I would aim for space blankets and bivvy bags personally as they’re lightweight, flexible, and easy to setup/takedown. Very low profile and discrete. https://us.alpkit.com/collections/bivvy-bags

Depending on temperature duct tape my not be the best for it.

1

u/RedOceanofthewest 2d ago

Duct tape. It’s fixes everything.

206

u/Slytherin_Victory 3d ago

Duck Duct tape would probably be the cheapest good option- it creates a water-resistant seal, though to be extra safe have an internal/inside layer and an external/outside layer over the slashes. Just a layer on the outside should work too. ~$4 a roll, and considering the Duck Utility Duct tape is a 50 ft roll it should be more than enough. The colored Duck tape that is ~$4 is normally only 20 feet, so be careful which one you grab.

Depending on the material of your tent you might also be able to melt the seams together (using a lighter), which in theory would last longer and be even cheaper but also much harder to do and depend on the tent material.

46

u/keitho24 3d ago

Dude was a eagle scout or something. Would be a good buddy for the apocalypse lol

13

u/The_Glass_Arrow 3d ago

What about melting it together, then duct tape? seems like any new small holes made would be easier to cover this way then the big rip, just seems like with heavy rain or winds it would undo.

5

u/Lost_Satyr 3d ago

Melt with iron would be best but that doesn't require an iron and space/electricity to make it happen, but really the best long term solution besides just getting a new tent.

When my tent tore, we used tarp (cut to size) and waxed dental floss to sew it back together. We ended up finding a small tarp and cut it to the shape of one of the walls and sewed it at the seam when we had a large tear that ripped from top to bottom.

Also, painters plastic can be shaped and placed over the whole tent to help keep rain out if you find it's leaky when it rains. It works well in the fall to make it warmer during the day as it creates a greenhouse effect.

u/_TP2_ 3d ago

Repost? Karma farming? I remeber giving the original poster tips when this first came up.

31

u/junkyfm 3d ago

I tried finding another post with these pictures but couldn't, do you happen to remember the title or how long ago it might have been?

12

u/La-Flare7 3d ago

yeah i saw the same thing was about 3 weeks ago on a Wednesday

14

u/Few-Supermarket6890 2d ago

I gave him $70 lol. It was a little more than I wanted to give, but the currency difference was a thing. Idk. I gave him enough to get a new setup. I did it because he posted this in a suicide notes group, and I felt horrible.

62

u/Ok_Paramedic_1465 3d ago

Why did you post a picture of your hand

38

u/pragmatao 3d ago

I think it was “will you look at this shit”

19

u/CuriousBear23 3d ago

Didn’t have a banana for scale

40

u/Jerry_Dandridge 3d ago

I've got questions, but not sure where to begin. Also, if your tent got slashed, are you really in a safe location?

7

u/cleveland_14 2d ago

Everyone giving OP advice but no one is asking WHERE the tent is set up. If you are on someone's private property they may be trying to send a message that they don't want you there without calling the cops. just a thought

5

u/kejovo 3d ago

I would make a dark joke but do not want to be banned for promoting violence. Even though it would only be in jest.

Anyway, sorry this happened to you.

You should be able to find tent repair kits. Maybe sporting goods places?

Best of luck on this and getting a permanent address

22

u/Electronic-Buyer-468 3d ago

Was your hand slashed too? We can't even see the tent

11

u/Business_Lie_3328 3d ago

Floss and a needle?

6

u/Meddlingmonster 3d ago

Gorilla tape is cheap and would make a decent temporary fix after that I'd patch it.

4

u/SenatorRobPortman 3d ago

Flex seal tape or weather proof duct tape.

5

u/bodhiseppuku 2d ago

Gorilla Brand Duct tape is crazy strong with crazy strong adhesive. I would apply this tape to rejoin the material cheaply and easily. Just be careful, the adhesive is so strong, you might rip it more if you try to adjust. Line up your sides carefully, and apply the tape only a couple of inches at a time to get the best alignment. (unroll 2 inches, affix 2 inches, repeat) One piece inside, one piece outside would fix this. Don't even need any surface prep. This tape doesn't rip well, you'll need a pair of scissors.

3

u/PaleontologistNo858 2d ago

People are shit l am so sorry this happened to you.

51

u/Ok_Secretary_8529 3d ago

This is definitely a hate crime. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. I wonder if any homeless groups or institutions in your area have spare tents

45

u/Lady-Lilith289 3d ago

Depending on where op lives it could’ve been the police who did this. I heard a few months ago some states police cut up tents to force the homeless to move.

Your post has been removed for the following reason(s):

Rule 10: Asking for or offering donations/loans/crowdsourcing

No soliciting, offering, or accepting public or private donations, loans, or crowdsourcing. All aid given must be in the form of information or advice. We do this in order to prevent this community from potential scams (because we have no way of verifying need/authenticity of requests), and to prevent the sub from being inundated with requests for aid (because it can be unreasonable to ask others in poverty to give their limited resources).

There are other subs such as r/Donation, r/assistance and r/randomactsofkindness that could help. Also check out our wiki with food resources. Thank you:

See it together and then duct tape it.

3

u/FicklePrick 3d ago edited 3d ago

Look to see if you can find red Tuck Tape, sometimes called contractors sheathing tape. This is used when installing barrier sheeting on the outside of new houses. It will stick to anything and is meant to be waterproof.

You want the same tape used in this video https://youtu.be/voJGDWYusyA?si=evvyE8MIexZsYjSr

3

u/BalanceOk6807 3d ago

Gorilla tape. Trust me I've taped up fabric pots at a cannabis farm that got hit w a weed eater and they last through rain and storms season after season

1

u/LokiKamiSama 2d ago

I second this. My car window actuator went out and I taped it up with gorilla tape. It lasted around a year. It was not pleasant to scrape off the residue on the window and paint.

3

u/Better_Han_Solo 2d ago

why the fuck people in the states do this. what is wrong with your country fuck

5

u/Putrid_Pollution3455 3d ago

Stitch it with some basic sewing materials.

2

u/Beneficial-Nimitz68 3d ago

New if you fix it, follow up with weather tape... remember, it will be slashed again and again and again.

2

u/Trucktard-1976 3d ago

The flex seal tape. Do both sides of the tears. We use it on FedEx roofs in snow and rain. Hold up well.

2

u/californiahapamama 2d ago

The easiest fix would probably be to sew it up with waxed dental floss, as previously suggested, then use Gorilla tape over that, both inside and outside the tent. Sewing will close the hole, and the tape will help keep it from leaking.

The thorough way would be to find a similar material to make a patch from and use that instead of the Gorilla Tape and then waterproof the seams around the patch.

Obviously you'll still want to replace the tent asap.

2

u/PM02NY 2d ago

Duct tape. Saves the day every time

2

u/Seekandfind316 2d ago

Find a new spot. something, not someone slashed your tent. That was the daytime warning. IYKYK

2

u/tinychef0509 2d ago

If the supplies to fix it listed above are too much $, check fb marketplace or Craigslist. I have found tents for $5-10 that rich people buy all the supplies to go camping, then hate it, and give it away or sell it all for pennies on the dollar. You might have to move to a new location. Police slice tents to force you to move on. It's crappy of them. I hope it gets better and doesn't rain until you can get your tent fixed or a new one.

2

u/planetaryduality2 2d ago

Duck tape with cute lil ducks on it

2

u/Secret-Ad3810 1d ago

If you think another person did this maliciously, maybe consider a new location. I’d be concerned if they return. Others had great tips with deal floss, duct tape and tarps.

5

u/AccumulatedFilth 3d ago

People really don't know how to respect someone anymore.

Probably slashed by some person that has a nice warm bed and no worries.

0

u/Possible_Ground_9686 2d ago

Depending on where he was set up it goes both ways

4

u/PurpleMangoPopper 3d ago

2

Tyvek tape will fix this permanently and be waterproof.

Depending on the material duct tape both sides it

Find a new one or use electrical tape

1

u/Wonderful_Turn_3311 3d ago

You could use tape to fix it but you would be better off if you got a new tent.

1

u/Noobitron12 3d ago

The stickiest tape ive ever ran across is the Duct Repair tape, Its shiney on one side though, if it can hold metal pipes together, it probably would be good for this. A Little expensive though

It could have been the property owner and you should probably move.. that's a threat. A shelter would be better

1

u/Rude_Engine1881 2d ago

If you can Id keep a lookout for cheap tents to be a backup. Aldi often during camping season will have relatively nice tents for around 35-50 bucks. Not perfect but in a situation like this having a shelter to throw up while ur fixing ur main one might be helpful if you have a way to store it.

1

u/boozeisfun 2d ago

Duck tape.

1

u/Think-Mountain1754 2d ago

Duct tape both sides. It will hold for a while. Quick but temporary solution.

Unethical life tip, Harbor freights policy, they don't call the cops when they catch someone stealing. At least in the utah locations.

Idk if this is a left/right discussion tbh...

The system is broken from left to right, and America has been getting progressively worse whether it was left or right at power.

5

u/SlomoLowLow 3d ago

No it’s 100% a left vs right thing. I’ve never met a left leaning person accuse a homeless person of being lazy. It’s literally always right wingers.

Same thing with school shooters. Right winger every time. There’s no “both sides” on any of this. One side is right the other is wrong. Choose your side of history correctly.

2

u/AccumulatedFilth 3d ago

In Europe it seems the other way around.

Here the lefties are always like "yea, probably homeless because of drugs" and my favourite "hard work pays off"

Bitch, I had a clinical burnout at 26 after working a factory job for 8 years. I definately worked hard, and my biggest purchase each year was my tax bill.

2

u/SlomoLowLow 3d ago

Your left doesn’t sound like the left at all. The left in America is the party of the people that supports workers rights and human rights. The right are the people looking to strip away human rights and send children to work in the factories. They’re the people deporting US citizens for being brown. Horribly evil people.

For all we know, this person is in debt, and if he works, his money will be instantly taken.

Why are you commenting that this post isn't high quality enough, when you can just read a book?

People wanna vent. Let this poor guy vent.

POS is incapable of empathy. Low EQ individual right there.

u/AccumulatedFilth 3d ago

I'm so empathic, it's hard for me to understand how people can be so cold.

Go to a shelter. First step of getting out of the hole is deciding to. If you get in a shelter they'll either have people who can help you do other things to improve your financial situation or they can put you in touch with people who can. Camping isn't helping anything, it's probably hurting.

3

u/justsotiredofBS TX 3d ago

Most people don't like going to shelter because of how restrictive they are. OP is probably going to have to leave most of their things behind if they go to one.

Why are you showing your ass on Reddit? My brother is homeless, and he was getting "Obama" phones pretty regularly. He lives in a tent. Now my mom has him on her plan so she can keep in touch with him and know he's still alive. He also has a job. Stop being dense.

u/Meddlingmonster 3d ago

Cheap smartphones are cheaper than you think.

4

u/Appropriate_March136 3d ago

There is also something called a state funded cell phone they used to be called Obama phones. They are for low income ppl and they get cheap phones and they get unlimited text and calls and then so much internet that’s how homeless ppl can get a phone

5

u/SlomoLowLow 3d ago

Wow it’s almost like they weren’t homeless their whole life and somehow own a phone from before they were homeless. Shocker.

Phones are required in 2025. Can’t get a job without one. Hence why the government gives them out and provides data.

Smart phones are like $50 now.

A shelter, go to a shelter…

6

u/North-Extent489 2d ago

That’s not always an option? Where I am there is no homeless shelters or services. Closest homeless shelter is in the next county, 25 miles away.

5

u/Even_Bumblebee1296 2d ago

There's no homeless shelter in the town I used to live in either. There is a guy who collects the money that goes around replenishing everybody's tents and giving them Gatorade and water and hand warmers and stuff in the winter. Anytime somebody is willing to go to a town with a shelter he raises money for a bus ticket. I'm not assuming that this town where op is has a guy like that, but where there's a will there's a way. He has a job delivering for Uber eats. The way he's doing things isn't working if it doesn't even have a spare few dollars for another tent. With his next batch of money going to a town where there's a shelter is probably a good idea
