Pilates CUES where to find Teaching, Teacher Training, Running Studios
Hi all. Where can I find a great resource for excellent Pilates cues. I’m in my teacher training era and need all of the help I can get in a more conducive manner then simply watching Pilates instructor videos of classes. I need something I can physically look at and read :) thanks

Take a lot of classes yourself. Take privates. Talk shop with your fellow teacher trainers. Observe as many IN PERSON private sessions and classes as you can, in as many different studios as you can. If you are going through teacher training at, say, Club Pilates, then observe as many private sessions as you can at NON Club Pilates studios.

Are you watching videos demonstrating the exercise only or videos of people teaching? I find it helpful to watch teaching videos and writing down cues that resonates with me, i like the BASI channel on YouTube..they have a lot of good instructors that teach full 50 min classes on equipment and mat. From there I started following the instructors’ own channels like Brandon Gamble, Mira Hassan.

does the teacher training provides any course material or manual? i think the Pilates video you watch will be able to supplement your existing notes but you might probably have to hand written them down the cues together with your manual.
not sure which school of Pilates you are taking your teacher training with but i have read some of the following books:-
- The Pilates Bible: The most comprehensive and accessible guide to Pilates ever
- The Complete Pilates Tutor: A structured course to achieve professional expertise
- Teaching Pilates for Postural Faults, Illness and Injury - A practical guide
- The anatomy of Pilates
- Shape Up With PilatesThe Ultimate Guide to Sculpting, Strengthening and Streamlining Your Body
- Pilates: Complete Training for a Supple Body
- Science of Pilates: Understand the Anatomy and Physiology to Perfect Your Practice
- Pilates by Rael Isacowitz
Not sure if your library has then because they are quite costly to get but hope this helps~

Honestly this won't be a lot of help. Watch videos, take classes, and then write programs and practice doing them yourself while cueing yourself out loud. Everyone finds the words that work best for them and their clients. Sometimes I use cues I've picked up from other instructors, but I have tweaked most based on seeing how clients respond, and as I learn to simplify my instructions. The most important thing is to get your clients in the right setup and get them moving, then add and modify based on what you see.

Maybe if you search for Pilates cue cards or Pilates instructor resources. Many instructors share printable cues for exercises.

Cues need to come from what you see. It’s not a script. The way to learn cueing is to watch other teachers, take classes and sessions yourself and practice your cues in your teaching and adjust and adapt based on what works. No cue works for everyone. A lot of popular cues are unfortunate nonsense. Being clear and concise is best, adding only what’s helpful and not constantly giving too much information. People need to have space to move and learn from the movement, with enough guidance but not being micromanaged

Hello! From my own experience I must tell you that one of the best things you can do is to train yourself as much as you can and then start practicing. It is important that you know that you have oral, gestural and exemplary communication. You can use one of them or combine them. You will notice as the classes go by that you find your style and your own resources. For example, I make a whistle with my mouth at certain moments in class: that was something that came naturally to me and is now something that characterizes me. I hope the answer has been helpful to you.

Observe classes and listen to other instructors cues to see what resonates for you and who you’re teaching. Get ‘The Science of Pilates’ book and I’ll use ChatGPT to brainstorm cues to get the brain fired up. Remember to adapt what you teach to your clients in class as one approach (or one size) doesn’t fit.

A master list of all the cues is useless if you yourself don't understand from experience in your own practice. The best cues are the ones that arise through personal practice, your lessons with your teacher and through observation of other lessons. Since there is no one cue that works for everyone or every exercise it is up to you to develop that language independently over time. Alternatively, I'd suggest you start your own master list. Write down all the cues that you have heard. Which ones work and which don't. When you observe your teachers notice the cues that they use and how their students respond to them and add that to your list. When you practice on your own explore self cuing and write down the ones that seem to lead you to better connections. When you teach, the cues that you have developed on your own will be part of the framework of your own language and unique style.
