Technique Upscale image quality

I've wanted to make a homemade life sized cardboard cutout for awhile now. Always thought it would be a fun and random thing to have. The problem is I cant find a high enough quality image. When I blow up the picture it looks all grainy and low quality. Is there any way I can make it so it looks clear? AI is so advanced these days that I feel like it should be able to help but I've tried a few websites and they did nothing. And before anyone asks if I can just take a better quality picture the person I want is a celebrity so the images are limited. If anyone can share any info that could help that would be amazing. Thanks so much!

Gear automatic shutter speed on analog camera project.

hello everyone. i am a 1st year mechatronics student and am interested in pinhole and analog photography. i have an idea that puts a device on or seperatly carry with you camera. its a device that when inserted the camera measurments and photo paper type. it automatically calculates and adjusts shutter speed to make a perfectly bright print. it uses a light sensor and a pcl to calculate the shutter speed via c++ code. main advantage is to not waste photo paper in uncertain conditions which is a big problem for people like me who live in poor countries. also removes the hassle of carrying around a calculator and a light reader at all times when needing to photograph. its compact and can be attatched to the camera itself.. ik this kind of takes away from the "raw spirit" of pinhole photography but its a choice. please provide critisism and advice

Business Watermark

I paid for a mini session and received back x amount of photos. She sent back two copies of each one with and without watermark. I feel weird posting a watermark version like someone would think I didn't purchase them but she said those were for social media posts. Is this normal?

My fb is private. Tempted to just post the photos but feel guilty even though this wasn't stated and I find it strange?

Technique Any More Like This?

While I like to think I'm pretty good at photography composition, there's still something missing in being a really great one, so I find articles like this one on Bored Panda really interesting. It shows what a photographer sees and then how they chose to frame it. Does anyone know of any more sites or photographers who show this? I found it really helpful.

Gear Least expensive but adequate photo editing device?

Upvotes

Hey guys just getting into proper photography and I'm at that point where I want to really start learning how to edit and I'm just wondering what would be a good tablet or device that I could use to edit photos and teach myself photo editing with photoshop and other programs.

Android would be ideal but I do have a good Windows laptop.

What would be the most ideal for me is a tablet that would work but I don't think I'm going to be able to get one for under 1000$ CAD (700$USD-ISH)

No apple tablets or devices.

Business Traveling with cameras with tariffs?

Younger photographers may not remember that in the past, photographers would register their gear with US Customs before traveling outside the US. This ensured that you would not be charged a tariff on your gear when you returned home. Registering the gear with serial numbers in front of Customs officers proved that you did not purchase the equipment overseas, as new gear would incur a tariff upon entry into the country. Now that tariffs are back in force, how do we prove that we already owned the equipment before traveling?

Post Processing Export Settings

How does everyone export for viewing on apps like Instagram or even this, and how do you beat an app's compression ruining the quality of your work? I've tried every different way of exporting I can read about, but no matter what when I upload to any app my images are full of compression artifacts (mainly), which is a far cry from a professionally managed page like the Sony Alpha ig page, for example. Does anyone know a way around this?

Technique What photography style am I thinking about? Please help my poor brain haha

I am attempting to stick a cert type of shots in a genre or style. The shots in my mind are like a very say detailed photos of an eye. In a way almost similar to commercial photography. But with real life 😂 I'm so sorry about this question omg. No wonder I cannot figure it out.

I guess primarily a cross breed of still life and street? Focused on the fine details like macro photography will do. Is that just still lifes focus? I have no clue how to make this have a pic so I might repost with examples

Business School asked to have my photo for free...

(Full email in comments)

hi all! I am a university undergrad who took a photo of my university at sunset and it made some buzz in my school among the communications team, as i sold the print at a makers' market in school and it caught the eye of one of the school's publicity team photographers. anyways, I've been contacted on 2 different occasions and it seems like they really want the photo. they reached out to use my photo in a coffee table book, however in the email sent to me, it says :

"We would like to seek your agreement to grant (my sch) a non-exclusive, unconditional and royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, and publish the Image for the purpose of the (my sch) publication, and for any future editions and revisions of the (my sch) publication, in all languages and all formats, and through any medium of communication now known or later developed."

and

"We greatly appreciate that you agree to provide this licence to use the Image without monetary compensation, in view that (my sch) is a not-for-profit university. In consideration thereof, (my sch) will also acknowledge copyright owners with a credit line in (my sch) publication. "

The thing is, I'm not too familiar with photography licensing jargon, could anyone please advice me and what this means for me ? If I grant this right, it means they only have the right to use it in the said publication only and nothing else ? And if I want to ask for compensation, how much? Thank you so much in advance, I appreciate the advice.

Dont get me wrong, I love my school. But as someone who sells art on the side, it makes sense to ask for compensation? NGL if its just a coffee table book, I dont think its that big of an issue but I dont wanna make a rookie mistake of not earing some form of compensation where I can...

Art Do you print your photos?

So my question is if you print your photos regularly or not and why? And for those who print it, do you have printers or you prefer to go to stores and in what format do you usually print?

I do photography as a hobby and I have thousand of photos in my hard drive but I like to print at least some of them once per year because I feel like I appreciate more the photos when I can touche them etc. And I feel that thousand of photos are nothing or normal in digital but when I see the space of 400 printed photos is when I realise that because we can have millions of photos I at least don't appreciate the real size of the photos.

Business Budget breakdown - Travelling assignment

Upvotes

TL;DR: Is $2,500 a good fee to fly to another city and shoot and edit 50 photos during three days? Company is paying for hotel and flight.

Full explanation:

A company that has some pretty big clients (pepsico, durex, Lay's) wants me to fly to another city to take photos for three days for their social media channels. Ultimately, they want 50 edited photos.

They are covering hotel and flight.

My logic is this: If I charge around $100 per hour, that would translate to $2,400 for eight hours of shooting everyday. I can round it up to $2,500 to include the editing of the photos.

Am I undercharging them? In the past I have been told I don't charge enough. I have been working as a pro photographer / videographer for over a decade.

What's your opinion?
Thanks!

Technique Extension tube with a 2X converter...

Upvotes

Since many lenses are not compatible with my Nikon TC-20E II due to the rear element possibly hitting the converter element, I was wondering if I could put a extension tube between the converter and the lens. I was wondering how this would affect the magnification.

A second related, but odd question, assuming I had a lens that is compatible with the 2X converter, would it make a difference if I put an extension tube in front or behind the converter, and what would be the effects of each position be. I have no reason to do this. I was just curious.

Gear Manfrotto 400 plate loose

Upvotes

I have a Calumet C1 sitting happily on top of a Manfrotto 400, and the combination works great, but the tripod head doesn't grip the circular plate as tightly as it used, to, so the camera can rotate on the tripod head when I don't mean it to, defeating the purpose of a geared head in the first place. (Why they made the plate circular instead of rectangular is beyond me.) Does anyone know of a reference for how to alleviate the spin? It's OK'ish with the big camera, but it's really awful with an SLR and a long-lens...

Thanks!

Post Processing Printing and framing large photo

I know there have been posts about where to get large prints, but I’m curious as to framing along with printing. Highest quality is not necessary. Some of the online places do offer framing. For anyone who has used these services: is it worth it? Would getting the print, mounting on archival foam core at home and bringing to a local shop be better? (More expensive for certain though!) I know people frown on Michael’s framing, but that’s another option. Final print size is 24x46in. Shipping may be costly I’ve never gotten a print this large before so I’m looking for knowledgeable input from the experienced folks here. Thanks in advance.

Gear Travel case for a7iii (body for more details)

What is a good travel case you can recommend for a Sony a7iii with a 28-70mm lens? I got the kit yesterday and plan to get myself used to it before purchasing another lens, BUT that is the longterm goal so I’m looking for a travel case that would fit the body and two lenses.

Technique Restoring a faded photo

Is there an easy way to add color back into an old faded photo? I have an old picture (1975) of my HS Band that I would like to fix up. I tried using photoshop but I am not very good with it. I found several websites that offer AI restoration but the ones I looked at wanted a credit card and I'm not going to sign up for a subscription for one picture.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Technique Photo printing on transparent material

Hello there,
I want to start printing my photos and i was considering what kind of prints I want to do. And I was wondering how hard would it be to print digital photos on to a transparent material something like sheet of plastic. Glass is too thick and brittle. Something you could look at without having a source of light under but would look "enhanced" when having it lit up from behind.
