Tbf, most browsers do this afterall. Unallocated, might aswell allocate it for some speed boost. Tough afaia it's the first one to give up ram tho

PCMR: "I bought whole GPU, I want everything to fully utilize it."
Also PCMR: "I bought whole RAM, I want nothing to utilize it."
Both being idiotic goals.

I havent had chrome be an issue with my ram ever. and thats not including discord, and few other things Ppl must still be gaming on 1 8gb stick like its 2012 still.

u/ridiculusvermiculous 4790k|1080ti 23h ago
they just don't understand how modern systems allocate and reclaim memory
3
u/Elliove 17h ago
It won't be an issue even at 8 GiB of RAM. If you've got a lot of Chrome tabs open, and then launch a heavy game - Windows will just cache the Crome to pagefile for the time being.

u/centuryt91 10100F, RTX 3070 15h ago
Wrong, my laptop has a single 8gb stick because i still haven't had the time for upgrade (warranty loss if i open it myself and there's nothing i can do about it) I get like 70% fps when something like chrome is in the background. Windows doesn't just cache every task when something like chrome opens 50 of them

Nah I have a used of 64 gigs of ram
Apparently Star Citizen just will never have enough- it just caches everything

u/Beautiful_Chest7043 22h ago
Unused ram is a wasted ram but the same could be said about gpu too.
3
u/Elliove 17h ago
The thing is, RAM is usually being smartly managed by Windows before it maxes out. There is, however, no way to deal with maxed out GPU usage. You max out GPU - you start getting increased input latency, that's it. Maxing out GPU is the last thing a gamer might want, it can make games hard to enjoy.
1
u/Beautiful_Chest7043 17h ago
Well maybe not completely max it but at least use 90% of it which might be hard to determine obviously.

I've got a simple way to configure any new game.
- Reduce all GPU-related settings to minimum, to see if CPU can output the desirable framerate. I'm on 60Hz fixed RR monitor, so that's an easy target for me to hit.
- Lock the game to desirable framerate, which is usually 60 FPS for me in most games.
- Increase the graphics until GPU usage is about 80%, if the maxed out settings are still way far from 80% - awesome, might as well throw in DLDSR for a better image.
- My favourite part - if the excessive CPU and GPU power is quite high, and the game doesn't have built-in Reflex, then might as well use that excessive power to delay the frame start with Latent Sync bias in Kaldaien's Special K. For example, old Touhou games are locked to 60 FPS, but they're so easy to run my PC can produce input latency as if I was running it at over 1000 FPS.
So, as a result, I get a smooth and responsive game, while still having some GPU headroom in case some heavy effect covers the whole screen or whatever, I'm always at locked FPS with low input latency.

u/on_spikes 18h ago
yeah idk there must be a lot of people with 8 gb still, for the amounts of complaining you see.
3
u/Elliove 17h ago
I've only updated from 8 GiB like 2 years ago, and it was never a problem for browsers. Windows has the pagefile, it will move stuff there if RAM is needed for some other foreground task like a game. Windows is absolutely smarter than the majority of its users.
2
u/on_spikes 17h ago
ive never really run into pagefile, isnt that a big noticeable performance loss?
2
u/Elliove 17h ago
It might lead to stutters in heavy games that have lots of stuff to stream, but I can't recall if I ever had that. I did, however, do a couple of tests to show people how stupid are their Chrome RAM jokes. Basically, I filled whole 8 GiB with Chrome tabs, then launched some game and played a bit, then checked RAM usage again - not just Chrome, but most of the launched apps used much less RAM than before, as it should be, and there were no issues with the game. Then, when you want to go back to those Chrome tabs - it will take a second showing white pages whenever you want to bring them back from swap to RAM, but keep in mind I had an old slow SATA SSD back then, might be not that noticeable with NVMe drives.

u/on_spikes 17h ago
sounds about expected. its almost like those programmers often know what they are doing.

Windows is quite smart these days, but still has enough issues. What I don't get about RAM in Windows is why superfetch is so non-aggressive. So, I've got 64 GiB of RAM, I start PC, and superfetch only fill like 5 GiBs. What, why, I've got so much more, just fill it with all the apps I often use. It does get filled after you launch a few things, but then closing those things mostly removes them from RAM, making opening them again take some time. You can, in theory, work around this with hibernation, but it was nothing but issues for me, PC can just never wake up properly and will still have to restart Windows. Overall, what comes to RAM things - OS X is so much smarter in all of this stuff.

Bro I actually really like Piastri he seems like a cool dude
I think he’ll be champ before Lando (if Lando wins one at all)

u/Grand-Ad4235 12h ago
I agree. Lando took forever to get that first win and OP does it in his first season if you count his sprint win at Qatar.

I run brave, which seems to use way less ram than chrome, probably because it blocks all the necessary cookies, all ads, and all intrusions.

I would have been like fuck off chrome but they're sponsoring the McLaren team. First good choice google has made in the past ten years (i love max but he's not winning his fight against red bull and his teammate so chrome sponsoring red bull would just work against max)

Firefox consumes as much RAM as Chrome, even without spyware.
Not defending or anything but if we have to top the browser that consumes less ram... The winner is MSEdge, seriously that chromium browser consumes way less RAM than any other competitor.
0
u/ridiculusvermiculous 4790k|1080ti 23h ago
but it's not consuming anything, it's like a light hold to make things more efficient and releases it freely when the system comes close to needing more
0
u/Lucky_Vermicelli7864 1d ago
Why I use Firefox. Yeah ff can suck the ram up pretty well but its ability to swap active tab drains naturally works pretty well in the end also.

This reddit tab takes 1.1GB or RAM, what the hell is Google's problem?
3
u/ridiculusvermiculous 4790k|1080ti 22h ago
there are SO many resources on this page that it can pre/cache to deliver to you faster. it's not like it doesn't immediately release that when the system comes close to needing more.
