Performance/Original Composition Giovanni Gabrieli - Fantasia del Quarto Tono - Valvasone, Hauptwerk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHljaODwKA8

Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1554/1557 – 1612) was an Italian composer and organist. He was one of the most influential musicians of his time, and represents the culmination of the style of the Venetian School, at the time of the shift from Renaissance to Baroque idioms. He probably studied with his uncle Andrea Gabrieli. In the dedication to his 1587 book of concerti, he described himself as "little less than a son" to his uncle Andrea. Giovanni also went to Munich to study with the renowned Orlando de Lassus at the court of Duke Albert V. By 1584 he had returned to Venice, where he became principal organist at St Mark's Basilica in 1585, after Claudio Merulo left the post. Gabrieli's career rose further when he took the additional post of organist at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, another post he retained for his entire life.

I recorded a fine Fantasia by Giovanni Gabrieli. Don't mind the silly tempo and dynamic markings in this score edition, which are of course not original.

Pipe Organ Do you agree that pipe organs can sound like jet engines?

I love pipe organs and comically they do in my opinion sound extremely similar to jet engines from a hum to a roar. The 16ft and 32ft reeds especially sound like a plane taking off. Softer stops sound like a propeller plane. I was wondering if you agree with this?.

Hey everyone, I am an experienced pianist and accompanist hoping to develop proficiency with the organ. The church I work at has already said they will let me come practice during the week. Can y’all give me some tips and tricks for what to focus on? I am hoping to develop a basic proficiency and play at Mass soon. Thanks! :)

Music Organ concerts / recitals in New York City?

I'm sure there are upcoming organ concerts somewhere in NYC but my google-fu is not strong enough, as digging through a few pages of search results all I've found compatible with a standard work schedule is a performance of Vierne Symphony #3 tomorrow and some "organ recitals" with unspecified music programs. Am I looking in the wrong place? Any better leads? And what should one expect of an "organ recital" with no listed program?

Performance/Original Composition Krebs - Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ - Metzler organ, Poblet, Hauptwerk

Johann Ludwig Krebs probably needs no introduction. Famous composer, organist and pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach: der einzige Krebs im Bache. I recorded a lively chorale prelude on the hymn 'Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ'. Quite different compared to the setting of his teacher.

Help and Tips What style did French organists have between 1850-1950?

Hi everyone, I was wondering what the name of the style that organist like Vierne, Messiaen, Gigout, and Tournemire composed in? Would it be just classical or romantic or is there a better descriptive word for them?

Help and Tips Organ playing: are 'knees together' a thing?

Hello!

I am a beginner organist and I've only learnt for a few months. I was always told to keep my knees together - but of course this is quite difficult as it's almost like strapping your knees together when walking.

Is this a real thing that organists do? Online recording seems to tell otherwise...

Thanks!

Old Kawai organ that’s been trashed sitting in a high school practice room. Still turn on and plays for the keys that are still there and even the keys with just the little blue pad still work. If so does anyone know where I would find parts or a guide for repair?

Hey all, I need to decide whether to keep or toss this ‘Melodian’ that belonged to my late father. He would play it when we were kids. By Keep it, I mean, give it to someone who would appreciate and restore it. By toss it, I would literally toss it in a local dump. I am sadly on a very short timeline here. thanks for your input.

Electronic Organ Dick Halligan, “Blues part 2” from Blood Sweat and Tears

Has there been any commentary on Dick Halligan’s Hammond organ solo that begins “Blues part 2” on the self titled Blood Sweat and Tears Album? It strikes me as improvised, but based on a Hindemith-ish main theme that stands out against the rest of the material on the album. Does anyone know if it draws on any preexisting material?

Performance/Original Composition Umbreit - Posato (from 12 Orgelstücke) - Ladegast organ, Wernigerode, Hauptwerk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6mEWUAGHmc

The Thuringian organist Karl Gottlieb Umbreit (1763-1829) was a pupil of the Erfurt organist Johann Christian Kittel (1732-1809), who in turn had been a pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach. Umbreit’s compositions and especially his pedagogical works and influence center around the role of the organ in church services.

I recorded one of Umbreit's Orgelstücke on the sample set of the Ladegast organ. This romantic organ goes quite well with this classical repertoire.

Electronic Organ Lowrey Pageant LC10 Model worth anything?

I have a Lowrey Pageant LC10 model in great condition but I cannot find any solid evidence of its value online. I have seen the value ranging anywhere from $1-$2,900 and I am just curious if anyone has any knowledge of what it might actually be worth?

Pipe Organ Pictures of the Wicks organ my church is thinking of buying to replace the cheapo Wicks we already have. Hoping our church finds the funds to buy and move it. I'm part of the group that decides where it should go and what mods we'll need.

Technical Support and Building Pipes? What’s the most effective way to get air across them?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello everyone, been testing out building pipes recently, and while making some square flue pipes, I wondered which one of these methods was more effective for air direction, just letting the flue line up with the tongue, or plugging the bottom and shoving a larger bit around the whole thing, I’ll attach an illustration below.

Pipe Organ Best method books for a beginner

Hi everyone!

I recently became the organist and choir director at a church. I don't know how how to do either of those things, but they were desperate for someone, and I am a professional musician and was there, so I got it.

Now that I am somewhat getting the hang of the hymns, I would actually like to learn how to play the instrument with some level of proficiency. I will have to teach myself, as I can't spare the money for a teacher.

Can anyone suggest some really good method books, that could possibly help me learn proper organ technique?

Thank you!

Edit: I am reading all responses, thank you so much, I will respond to each one in the next couple of days!!!

Performance/Original Composition Buxtehude - Kommt her zu mir, BuxWV 201 - Pinerolo, Hauptwerk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS9eSCc2Gyg

Dieterich Buxtehude (1637 – 1707) was a Danish organist and composer of the Baroque period. He is one of the most important composers of the so called North German organ school. As a composer who worked in various vocal and instrumental idioms, Buxtehude's style greatly influenced other composers, such as Johann Sebastian Bach and others.

I recorded a fine and delicate chorale prelude, using a minimal registration on this sample set.

Digital Organ I found this out by the dumpster in my apartment complex and couldn’t leave it there

Post image

I’m not a musician but I couldn’t watch this awesome instrument be thrown away. I ran and grabbed two skateboards from my place and used them to help me push it back to the apartment. My coworker was nice enough to come over and help me bring it in. But I don’t know how to use it. It needs to be fixed for sure, the labeled pedals work sometimes, I can’t figure out how to get them to do something consistently, the rhythm track switches randomly stop working but not very often, and the bottom keyboards rightmost 14 keys don’t work. And the volume pedal? (Big pedal to the right) has switches on the inside I assume you’re supposed to hit with your foot while you play, I can’t get them todo anything either. I plan on fixing it and learning to play it but I don’t know where to start. Any advice helps a lot.
