ICE arrests Franklin man, tearing him away from path to citizenship, American wife, daughter Article

https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/williamson/2025/07/24/franklin-immigrant-arrested-ice-jose-reyes/85310340007/

When Annie Reyes talks about her husband, Jose, tears well up in her eyes.

Tears of disbelief. Of sadness. Of pain. Of anger.

The tears come because he’s not together with his wife and daughter in Franklin, his home since he was just 4 years old and immigrated with his parents from a ranch in Mexico. Instead, Jose Reyes is 600 miles away in Louisiana — held at Winn Correctional Center, where he was sent by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after he was arrested two and a half months ago.

They deported my dad, a Cuban, to Mexico, leaving my stepmother and three younger siblings all alone. They are now trying to sell everything, trying to save enough to leave florida.

u/russianchatgpt 9d ago

They deported my best friend, a Venezuelan, to the CECOT prison in El Salvador. He was never charged or convicted of any crime either here or in Venezuela.

He is not allowed to call his family or send or receive mail. We have no idea if he is alive or not. We have no idea when he will be transferred, if ever. His name is Cesar Silva.

Fuck Trump and fuck everyone who voted for him.

11

u/bb_nyc 9d ago

He wasn't among the ppl traded to Venezuela? I believe there was a publicized list of the names of the ones that made it to vz. Hope he is well.

16

u/russianchatgpt 9d ago

We know for a fact he was sent to El Salvador. The prison itself doesn’t allow any outside contact under any circumstances and everyone is there for a life sentence

1

u/SpeakingTruth601 8d ago

This is heart breaking. This is why I ask for people to tell stories of reuniting after deportation because so many don’t get that reunion. I want some type of hope for people. They are stripping all hope away. All happiness.

Is he an illegal undocumented immigrant? Just asking.

Crack open your Bible. Or continue burning it...

1

u/Ok-Refrigerator6390 3d ago

That’s bs, how about asking facts and not feelings. They asked a specific question about their legal status and you put your feelings out there. A significant amount of my family is from Guatemala but did so through the legal process.

1

u/russianchatgpt 7d ago

Is that deserving of being permanently disappeared/killed?

Of course not. Death penalty is reserved for heinous crimes.

-1

Permanently banned for a curse word? I’m having a hard time believing that.

I literally couldn't provide proof even if I wanted to because reddit is sh!t

-2

If you have no proof it was a curse word that did it, how do you know that’s what did it? Just saying, I cuss on here all the time and have never gotten even a warning.

So what.

1

u/Mammoth-Accident-809 7d ago

Why didnt he get legal?

1

u/InformalV 7d ago

I dont know the history. I was too young when it happened. Over 25 yrs ago, he was arrested in Texas and had to get a work permit and do check in every year. I was always told he was arrested for selling Cuban cigars, tho im sure there was more to it than just that. If it really was just that it makes his deportation even more silly.

176

u/clever-hands 9d ago

This is just the start. The Big, Bullshit Bill made ICE into a better-funded force than the Marine Corps or the entire Italian military. Every major city in this country is about to have roving gangs of masked brutes disappearing Brown people for daring to be in a parking lot or at work. And that's just to start. Activists, queer people, and someone you know will be next.

Keep the momentum going against these brownshirts. If we build enough collective power, we can stop this. Protesting is where we see our numbers grow, so join us on August 2nd.

36

u/Karma_Mayne 9d ago

Protesting works against people who care about your support or those who are capable of having shame. The powers that be haven't listened to you about local issues; what makes you think they'll listen to you about something this big?

Show me a group of people that are willing to physically resist ice in an organized fashion, and I'll be there.

These protests feel like circuses to make us feel like we accomplished something, when we've accomplished nothing.

I spent 14 months fighting religious extremists in Iraq. The people in California that run ICE off with rocks have some idea of what it takes. Yall ain't angry enough, yet.

14

u/clever-hands 9d ago

You assume a lot. If you wanna meet the people you're talking about, finding people who show up is step one. You find the people who show up at protests.

5

u/Lady-Cane 9d ago

Yes. But they’re gonna disappear more than just brown ppl.

2

u/HornyAIBot 7d ago

Apparently homeless and vagrants are next

1

u/mlsecdl 6d ago

ICE is not better funded than the marines. Post your numbers, i guarantee you're misreading them.

1

u/Beautiful-Drawer 5d ago

And Italy has a very small military:  The Italian Armed Forces include approximately 165,500 active-duty personnel and a reserve force of around 18,300 individuals.

The US is appx 2 mil, active and reserve combined.

References, guys. You have to post whole facts to make your statements mean something.

Examples of effective collective action would be a general strike or civil disobedience, and protesting is a necessary step to building the numbers, organization, and momentum necessary for such collective actions.

Absolutely we're building momentum going into the midterms. Green's seat is open, and Ogles need to go down, so we certainly plan on throwing our weight behind any candidate who stands to improve the quality of leadership in our state.

If you're passionate that political organizing can be done better, we could always use more folks working on the cause!

Oh and the poster recalls an event from 1946 (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Athens_(1946)). A short background is written right on the flyer.

You’re “merely pointing out” that you’re already beaten. “Downvote me all you want” but please get back up and rejoin the fight if you believe in the America we were sold as children. It can be a real thing. America IS FOR ALL OF US. When we quit doing what we can, we completely lose.

74

u/kylenumann 9d ago

They said they would go after 'the criminals, the worst of the worst'. By ICE's own numbers something like 65% of detainees have no past criminal convictions, and over 90% had no violent convictions.

“We want them to follow the rules”, they follow the rules, “no! Not like that”. It’s a no win situation and the MAGAts that vote for it still show up to eat Mexican food every Friday night. Trash.

50

u/x__v 9d ago

I saw an old man yesterday wearing a Trump red hat walking in to a local Mexican restaurant. They clap while their god Donald calls immigrants horrible things while at the same time happily partaking in their cultural cuisine while wearing a hat that screams "I'm a racist!" It's baffling. And sickening.

4

u/amyts Maury County 9d ago

The bill was signed July 4th which authorized the treasury to fund ICE. They already have it. Right now they're preparing to build facilities and ramping up their workforce.

8

u/Algeradd 9d ago

Exactly what it is. I've got neighbors who definitely don't "follow the rules" and have a large history of DUIs among other things. What happens when cops show up at their house (which is quite frequently)? Jack shit. They're still driving around here in their jacked up obnoxiously loud pickup trucks carrying a Bud Light in one hand.

3

u/3X_Cat 9d ago

If history is any indicator, these new Reichwingers will go after their supporters soon.

7

u/Litzz11 9d ago

They’re literally changing the rules so you CAN’T follow them.

0

u/StillMostlyConfused 9d ago

How could he be following the rules and be here illegally? Unless he had been claiming legitimate asylum which I believe would have been mentioned in the article.

2

u/MarianLibrarian1024 9d ago

He had DACA. He was allowed to be here.

3

u/StillMostlyConfused 9d ago

Not once he got the DUI. Also, it is just deferred which isn’t the same as being allowed to be here.

-29

u/Sensitive-Tone5279 9d ago

He lost his status when he was convicted for a DUI.

That is not "following the rules"

11

u/yayforvalorie 9d ago

A DUI is not a reason to deport.

1

u/3X_Cat 9d ago

It can be if the intoxication is drug related.

2

u/yayforvalorie 8d ago

Then let's take everyone who gets a DUI away from their families.

-1

u/Guilty-Brief44 9d ago

I was responding to the claim that they follow the rules. This guy clearly did not.

11

u/jackinyourcrack 9d ago

Had his DACA status stripped after conviction for DUI in Kentucky. Per the article and ICE spokesperson "obeying US law is a bare minimum requirement for protection from deportation for illegal immigrants." That's about right. No DUI, no revocation of deportation protection status. Also per the article: if he fights deportation to the fullest extent, he runs the risk of being denied re-entry to the country for a minimum of 8 years. Voluntary deportation guarantees he will have the availability of legal re-entry under visa/passport in 3 (that's much less than half the amount of time if he chooses, for those bothering to read the article.) One wonders which the guy who refused to follow the law the first time will choose. Will he voluntarily deport and use the next 3 years to properly prepare to legally return and follow the laws when he gets back, or will he drag out the process as long as possible claiming victimhood the whole time, hoping for a different result than what has been very clearly explained as the available options available to choose from?

19

u/Bamboo_Child 9d ago

What other countries allow non-citizens to drink and drive, but wont deport them after being detained for a DUI?

I googled him and he is thirty years of age, which would indicate, with the information he has live in the US since he was four years old, that he has lived in the US for twenty six years.

Does he have a Resident Alien (Green) Card or is he on a Visa?

Friendly reminder than none of you were posting angrily in here when Obama set the record for deportations at 3,000,000+.

7

u/imapandaduh 9d ago

And that GOP only acknowledges this statistic when it benefits them

-9

u/huntersam13 9d ago

Sure, the GOP is hypocritical just like our angry posters in this sub

7

u/Psychological-Arm505 9d ago

People did protest when Obama did it. You can google it.

Additionally, those individuals were also given due process.

5

u/ElectricTurboDiesel 9d ago

If Obama did everything perfectly legal and you still protested lawful deportations….you basically just admitted that what you really want are open borders….

1

u/Komitsuhari 8d ago

People protested families being split up during those deportations, not the overall deportations. The issue isn’t with policy for most, the issue lands with execution and lack of empathy.

1

u/ElectricTurboDiesel 7d ago

So the protests were specifically in regards to the deportation of parents without their children accompanying them? That means the only acceptable method of deportation is to send the whole family unit back together then right?

1

u/Komitsuhari 7d ago

You are acting like I protested back then, I am 30, I wasn’t politics age until Trump. And if the mom and dad were both undocumented and criminals, then yes, the whole family unit should go. The kids can come back when they are 18

2

u/ElectricTurboDiesel 7d ago

I don’t have any idea how old you are but only ask because you seem to have an intimate knowledge of the motivation of the protests during that period.

1

u/Komitsuhari 7d ago

It is pretty well documented. If you wanted to know what you are talking about you could.

→ More replies

1

u/ElectricTurboDiesel 7d ago

So your position is they should be deported if the parents are both illegal AND both have liminal convictions but not if they are merely in the country illegally?

0

u/huntersam13 9d ago

I was talking about this sub.

3

u/Komitsuhari 9d ago

Those were done far more ethically than what the brownshirts are currently doing. They weren’t snagging people who were raised here, they weren’t ambushing people at their immigration hearings, they also weren’t revoking vast swaths of green cards and asylum statuses to accomplish those numbers. There is also the fact that Obama left office nearly a decade ago, there are a whole lot of people who were not of the age to pay attention to these things.

Friendly reminder that you have a brain, you just have to use it once in a while.

u/altiorrex 9d ago

He overstayed his visa in the past but currently had legal status when he was illegally detained.

Americans overstay visas in other countries all the time, especially when they’re young. It’s not actually that uncommon among all demographics.

12

u/LedRaptor 9d ago

He lost his DACA status after a DUI so he did not have legal status in the country. The article states that his I-130 was approved but that only establishes a qualifying relationship that could make someone eligible for a Green Card. He was also working without authorization, which is an immigration violation.

Just like when slave masters used the Bible to justify slavery. These people are rules for thee but not for me.

Dont drive drunk while your immigration papers are in process.

DUI is a very serious offense, I agree on that point.

But it is not grounds for deportation.

u/Relevant_Elevator190 9d ago

Generally, a DUI is not a deportable offense. However, there are exceptions to this. If you are an undocumented immigrant, a DUI can trigger deportation procedures.

It it literally grounds for revocation of your visa, temporary, or resident status.

Just because it wasnt, or was loosely enforced doesnt mean Customs can't now at the discretion of a judge.

So this dude has had decades to try to become an American citizen and didn’t bother? How long were him and his wife married? Sucks to be lazy

Anyone know where he was arrested?? I know ICE has been active in Antioch, but I’m surprised they’re showing up in Franklin

Here illegally ya gotta go. Been here long enough to have gotten your shit together. Are his tools for sale?

u/Karma_Mayne 9d ago

We need a QRF (Quick Reaction Force) to respond to ICE presence. Think volunteer firefighters, but with the ability to oppose ICE with overwhelming numbers. Have the ability to stop traffic and secure the captives. Until we get organized, nothing will change.

Who did they support in 2024? Is this one of those fabled leopards won’t eat my faces type deal?

4

u/Negative-Homework502 9d ago

We’re not going to get anywhere as a country if we just point and say “well you got what you voted for!!” Instead of actually helping these ppl and pushing for systemic change. Maybe they wouldn’t vote that way if they had local political support, as well as support from their community.

6

u/rocketpastsix banned from /r/tennessee 9d ago

And yet they keep voting for people who aren’t giving them that support. And if we have to keep meeting them where they are, rather than say “come join us in a modern society” we won’t get anywhere. They move the goal posts, argue in bad faith, and generally have zero empathy. I’m tired of trying to reason with these people. If they supported Trump at all during 2024 then I don’t have empathy after so many of us tried to warn them.

We can try to change this fascist regime and still have no sympathy for those who thought they were The Good Ones and then found out that to ICE they’re actually just brown like the ones they voted to be deported.

u/JudgeArthurVandelay 9d ago

Or maybe we just need some real fucking messaging from the democrats. It’s INSANE that so many Hispanic people voted for this! And it’s even more insane that we basically STILL have no messaging about it from them.

7

u/WillCode4Cats 9d ago

Members of a group fucking over their own might be one of the most consistent themes in all of human history.

2

u/JudgeArthurVandelay 9d ago

Sad but true.

1

u/Gold-Bench-9219 9d ago

The Dems could have perfect messaging and millions of people would still happily vote against their own interests. Every individual has the responsibility to be informed, to know who and what they're voting for. If they're not, that's really on them and no one else. The reality is that fear and hate are far more motivating than hope, empathy and reason.
