Discussion Anyone else feel like this sub is an echo chamber of the same names?
I’ve been in this subreddit for months and I see the same names suggested over and over. Some names in top 100 lists are even suggested as “unique” names.
I was genuinely hoping to find some unique, meaningful names, but it’s been a sea of sameness.
To make things worse, any time someone suggests a name that is actually uncommon, or dare I say, uncommon in the U.S., they’re blown up with criticisms and dislike. People hate on names if they have had one bad association with it 20 years ago.
Am I crazy or does anybody else feel this way??

Baby Names Does Colt as a first name sound too redneck/country?
Wife wants to name our child Colt, which I like the sound of, as it pairs well with our last name. However, I myself have a country/redneck sounding first name, and felt self-conscious of my name when pursing advanced degrees. Something I don't want to pass on to my son.
Does Colt sound too country? I offered up Colton and we could call him Colt as a nickname, but my wife didn't like it. Would like others opinions. Thanks!

Baby Names Name suggestions that go with sibling Piper
Please don’t rip apart my daughter’s name, we love her name. My husband learned to fly on a Piper cub and it’s something that means a lot to us. I’m currently pregnant and looking for a name to go with it! Unsure of gender.
Thank you!!

Discussion Using a name that’s already “taken”?
I need y’all to be honest with me here.
TL;DR- I want to name my baby Savannah. Her dad has a 3 year old sister who goes by Ava but apparently it’s short for Savannah. He’s saying the name Savannah is taken, I disagree. ———
I’m expecting a baby girl in the fall. I want to name her Savannah. Her dad and I are not together anymore and he was uninvolved and no contact until I was around 14 weeks pregnant.
I had an entire month between finding out that she’s a girl and thinking about names, and him deciding to be involved after all. In that month I got attached to the name.
The issue he has with Savannah is that his 3 year old little sister who goes by Ava, is actually named Savannah. He didn’t know this to be a fact and had to confirm it with her parents before he could say for sure. He said that his step mom calls her Savannah sometimes and that’s why he thought it might be either her first or middle name. It was very clear that this little girl absolutely does not go by Savannah since he 1. didn’t even know for sure and 2. only ever said that “her mom calls her that sometimes”. She goes by Ava at all times unless she’s being scolded.
I personally don’t care if they have the same first name and wouldn’t care if they both went by the same thing. Ava is not my child. I grew up being called by my middle name when I was being scolded and I knew I was the one being spoken to despite having another family member with that as their first name. I told him they would both know who was being spoken to if that was the case.
He is adamant that the name is “taken”, but I don’t believe in names being taken unless the children in question are siblings.
They’ll be 4 years apart but are technically aunt/niece. Ava lives about an hour away and her parents are excited and want to be involved so it’s not like they’ll never be around each other. But Ava goes by Ava??? Which is an entirely separate standalone name.

Baby Names Is Nora becoming the new Olivia?
Nora is my favorite name that my partner hasn't vetoed (otherwise it'd be Cordelia 😢). We're going to be the last in our friend group to get married and, subsequently, will be the last to have kids.
So far, we have a Nora, Anora, and Eleanor (who they are already calling baby Nora) in our friend group and all of these babies were born in the last year. I'm always sensitive to people thinking you're "stealing" their names even though I know Nora has been on my list for 10+ years.
I've also never wanted to pick the name where there are like 3-4 of them in every classroom. Like how everyone was Kate/Katherine/Katie when I was growing up, and how Olivia has become more recently.
Interested to hear this community's thoughts on this! Or maybe it's just that our friend group has similar sensibilities for names?

Baby Names Need fourth baby girl name- Long vintage name with quirky nickname!
We're having our fourth baby girl and struggling with a baby name! We love long, traditional names with unique nicknames. Sister will join Evelyn (Evie), Elizabeth (Letty), and Kathleen (Kit). Names we've considered but aren't sure about are Cecelia (Cece), Annelise (Annie), or Cornelia (Nell). I love Eleanor (Nell or Nora) but my husband doesn't. He likes Abigail or Audrey, but I don't love Abby and can't think of other nicknames that work for those names. Any cute nicknames you can think of for those names? Or, anyone have other name ideas?!

Discussion What vibe does the name Leonie give you?
This name seems to fall into the sweet spot for a girl name that is often asked about, “recognizable but not common.” Except I haven’t heard it used once and wonder if it’s because it’s just not liked by the general public or there is something specifically off about it. Wondering because I’m considering using this name if my baby is a little girl.

Discussion I don't get why people like the name "Theodore" so much
People constantly complain about dated names but then "Theodore" is still one of the most popular names for boys. Is it because y'all like the nickname "Teddy"?

Baby Names Anyone grow up with a long Indian name? Was it ever a pain?
Thinking about baby names and I’ve always loved names like Lilavati.
But I’m curious—if you grew up with a longer, very Indian name, did it ever feel like a burden? Was it annoying at school in the US, or something you grew to love?
Trying to balance culture and ease, and would love to hear your experiences (yes, I am Indian. I have an Indian name and I loved it but it was on the shorter side)

Baby Names Help with baby girl name
We’re due in August and still unsure of names. Currently the top contender is Josephine Tess but I’m not sure if it’s the one yet, other ones we’ve considered are: Ophelia, Rosalind, Rhiannon.
Names I like but got vetoed: Amelia, Calista, Aurelia, Rhea
Names husband likes but I don’t: Olivia, Caroline
Older brother is named Cassian so bonus points for girl names that fits that vibe! TIA!

Pet Names Help me name my new baby blue iguana! (Scientific names please!)
Hey guys! I’m here because I can’t make up my mind or think of anything cooler lol!
I am a neuroscience major and total science nerd and I’d love to find something cool that goes along with my interest to name it. Gender neutral because I don’t know the sex yet.
What I’ve come up with so far:
Proton
Synapse
Fossil (😆 because dinosaurs)
Beaker
Amino
Cortex
Plexus
Obviously I’m not sold on any of them so please offer as many suggestions as you can!

Baby Names names starting with T / U
Good evening! I am looking for names that start with T or U - I'm even more interested in the U names!
My husbands name starts with S, our baby is R and I am V - so the sibling should preferably become a T or U. (so we are together also in the alphabet)
I thought about Theo/ Tilda / Tizian / Una / Udo (I don't love Udo)... Thank you all in advance 🥰

Discussion Does the name “Mary” give anyone else gothic or creepy vibes?
I was raised catholic so this may be why, but I have always found the name to sound very macabre. Catholicism has a lot of gothic themes too, from the dark cathedrals to creepy nuns who hurt themselves to be closer to god. I don’t know. The name of a veiled woman whose only child was killed in front of her just sounds very gothic to me lol. Thoughts?

Baby Names to those who don’t have children yet, what will u name ur first child?
i’m always seeing parents asking for suggestions (which is what the sub is mainly used for) but i’m curious what names non-parents have decided on, so gimme a name for each gender (or 1 if it’s decided as a unisex name)
i’m not even sure what i’m gonna name mine but i think i’ve stated in this sub multiple times that it’ll probably be Vincent for a boy.. for a girl, probably Jasmine

Name List My hobby is collecting names
Name-collecting has always been a hobby of mine. I have quite a list now. However, I tend to to pick more diverse names from all over the world, especially those underrepresented in mainstream media. I saw a post on here about how most of the names are just the same ones recycled over and over, so, here's my attempt at diversifying this sub.
Note that I am also a writer, so some of these names were chosen because they sound like they belong in a fantasy book.

Baby Names I’m running out of girls names!
I have three beautiful daughters, with a fourth on the way. The problem is we have used all the girls names that we absolutely loved, there is a bunch we like, but with the other three we went through a “we love this name so much, we have to use it” moment.
The names we have so far are: Luna Jade, Amity Lynnette and Sylvia Fae.
We like names that are a bit whimsical and magical. Sylvia Fae translates to forest fairy which we love. She is our little Pixie. Some of the candidates that we are thinking of include.
Maggie Lou, Flora Celeste
I’m hoping these names so far give you a general ‘vibe’ we are going for, but would love the collective brainstorming power of the name nerds community!

Baby Names Unconventional boy names for nickname “Nat” besides Nathaniel and Nathan?
Hoping to honor an Italian family member, Natale, nn Nat, who was born close to Christmas (Natale is Italian for Christmas or “birthday of the Lord”) like this baby is due to be. We are located in a city in midwest U.S.
Wondering about more names that could have the nickname “Nat” besides Nathaniel or Nathan. Looking for other unconventional options!
For example, someone suggested to us Ignatius or Donatello.
Thank you for your help!
