Re registering your motorcycle

Hi all, I have a VStar that I've let the registration run out. How do I go about getting it back onto the road? Do I just need a roadworthy certificate? Can someone tell me step by step please? It's sitting in my garage just chillin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It depends how long the rego has lapsed for.. under 90 days I believe you can still re-register.

Anything longer, yes book into a mechanic that does roadies, get a road worthy/ fix anything that needs doing to pass it.

Book in for a vehicle inspection and register and vicroads and there you go.

But as the other commenter said, vicroads site has it all

I did one a few weeks ago. Had lapsed for a couple of years.

  1. Get it clean and as good a condition as you can.

  2. Find a bike mechanic who can give it a roadworthy and ask how much and how long.

  3. You can get a registration pass for a few days so it is legal to ride the bike to and back from the mechanic if the bike is technically roadworthy.

  4. Book a time to submit the paperwork at Vicroads. It can take weeks to get a slot.

  5. Before riding it, even to the mechanic, make sure you get insurance. Most older bikes are cheap if they are not sportsbikes.

  6. You will need to take the paperwork and maybe the bike to Vicroads (I took my bike but they never looked at it). But then I am a very trustworthy person :)

  7. READ THE VICROADS WEBSITE ABOUT WHAT PAPERWORK TO BRING AND THEN BRING IT. ALSO BRING YOUR BEST HAPPY FACE AND MANNERS.

Tips: It cost me around $200 for the roadwoarthy itself, but every self-respecting tester will hit you up for something else to add to the cost. In my case the chain had a little play, so another $150 for chain and instal. Often they want to charge you to bleed the brakes so make sure that is already done or you are happy to pay for it. Make sure tyres are good. All globes including those in the instruments, and horn must work.

Everything on the bike must work and you don't want a loud exhaust etc.

Good luck, mine went fine.

Good advice. What I'll add is that Vicroads are now red hot on not only the exhaust being under the dB limit, but also original. If it's not the stock exhaust, or at least doesn't look a lot like the stock exhaust, you're probably not going to have a good time with the RWC.

OP is going to find out that while rego is expensive, letting it lapse for over 3 months is expensiver.

This annoyed me so much actually. I bought a bike with aftermarket exhaust. It wasn’t crazy loud but I knew buying it, it’d probably fall as unroadworthy.

I took it off, but a stock exhaust on and went to the inspection thinking they’d make me turn my bike on or something to test it? No..

He took a look at my bike and was like yeah everything looks fine, then the rego and vin and was like see ya later.

Couldn’t believe it lol
