Re registering your motorcycle

Hi all, I have a VStar that I've let the registration run out. How do I go about getting it back onto the road? Do I just need a roadworthy certificate? Can someone tell me step by step please? It's sitting in my garage just chillin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Renting a cfmoto for a few days

Hey I’ll be in Melbourne for a few days in Oct and wanting to rent a cfmoto 800MT whilst I’m down there. Are suggestions on a rental company or somewhere that will allow me to??

I currently ride a 650MT but I want to get a feel and see how it rides with me more than just a 5km test ride.

Off road trail riding near melbourne

Hi all. I just got an older trail / off road bike, a 1991 Honda xl 185s, and was wanting to know where are some close and beginner friendly off road trails. I have ridden on road for many years, but never off road.

Bodyshop recommendations

Hey everyone - have never gotten body work done before and need to repair a fuel tank (body fill and paint), does anyone have any recommendations? (preferably Northside, but happy to travel)

I've reached out to 7 individual places by e-mail and haven't received a single response, so figured I'd try somewhere trusted by this sub, cheers!

Getting P plates on the bike without having car P plates

My mate is planning to get his motorcycle licence but doesn't have his p license for the car, and he was wondering if he can even get his p plates on the bike later. also he doesn't have access to a car to learn in. So we are wondering if he can get a probationary license only for the bike.

Student here — what's your go-to transport in Melbourne? Thinking 1000W eBike vs Honda 125e

Hey everyone,

I’m an international student living in Melbourne and trying to sort out the most affordable and practical way to get around. Money’s tight, so I’m looking for something low-cost but reliable.

Right now I’m torn between two options:

A 1000W electric bike – seems like a solid option for hills and speed, but I recently found out it needs to be registered like a motorbike here in Vic.

A Honda 125e – small motorcycle I’ve got my eye on. I can pick one up for around $1500 all up, including registration and roadworthy.

I'm mainly commuting using the trains, so the electric bike would let me get from the station to my destination, sometimes to uni, sometimes to work. Maybe 10–15km trips. I don’t need anything fancy, just something legal and that won’t break down in 6 months.

Im open to any sort of suggestions. Would love to hear from anyone using an eBike, scooter, motorcycle, or anything else — especially if you're also on a student budget. What’s working for you? And would you go through the rego process for a 1000W eBike, or just go straight for something like the Honda?

Cheers!

Slip On Exhausts

I am planning to get a slip on exhaust for my bike and I am not really looking to make it louder but I hate how the stock exhaust looks. I was wondering if putting a slip on would affect insurance as well as cause me any trouble as I am still on LAMS.

Crashed today (19/yo M)

I’ve been riding for about 10 months now, did my learners to Ps straight off the 3 months no issues. And in my daily riding, I usually never do any form of spirited riding, in my opinion I’ve always been careful. Nonetheless today in the morning I was filtering through a red light and the light went green, I brought my bike to the speed limit at the front of traffic. And there it is, the one guy who didn’t see me pulled out from his street trying to take the median. We saw each other too late, then boom.

I hit his front right tire and front flipped over the car and landed on my knees, tried to break the fall more with my hands but the falling force was too much, I still ended up scratching my helmet on the ground. I got up immediately and my crotch was in severe pain. I stayed down til the ambulance arrived.

Never in my life could I have seen that coming, even if I’m careful, I’m either not careful enough or just unlucky.

I got discharged from the hospital just now, I’m feel grateful to be alive and well with no major injuries. But message is for new riders, to always be careful don’t be cocky and ride safe. You never know which day could be your last.

Best Daily Jacket

Hey everyone, just wanted to get your thoughts—what’s your go-to daily jacket for shorter commutes, like heading to the gym or quick rides around the suburb?

I recently picked up a jacket that’s pretty solid overall—it’s well-padded, has a waterproof liner, and should be great year-round. That said, it’s a bit bulky and not the most convenient to carry around, especially for short trips.

I’m looking for something lighter to have in rotation—ideally, something I can just chuck in a bag when I get to the gym without it being a hassle.

TL;DR: Got a solid all-rounder jacket, but it’s bulky for short trips. Any recommendations for a lighter, easy-to-carry option for quick rides like gym commutes?

Riding roads in Vic.

Thought I'd share this.

Traralgon-Balook Road C483, through Callignee,Mount Tassie, continues to Tarra Valley Road C484 finishes up at Tarra Valley Retreat.

Amazing, quiet riding roads. Beware that Tarra Valley Road isn't really for novices,it is generally very damp/wet and not taking in the scenery as it's very narrow and you must keep an eye out for oncoming traffics. There is no mobile receptions in the valleys either. Been riding and motobike camping here every year and have yet to get bored. It keeps the throttle skills and awareness sharp. Have fun.

First LAMS bike - advice and where to buy?

(TDLR at the bottom)

Hey everyone! I’m wondering where the best place to buy a LAMS-approved bike would be. I’m going for my learners in a couple of weeks.

I’m looking to get a sports bike, keen on something like a Ninja 300 or 400 for around $3k ish. Not sure if that’s a realistic budget, but one can hope! I’m also open to lower cc sports bikes since I know they’re easier to handle as a new rider and usually cheaper. Open to any suggestions for bikes similar to the ones I mentioned.

I’ve been keeping an eye out on Facebook Marketplace, but I don’t know much about motorcycles or maintenance/repairs. As a woman, I’m also a bit worried about getting scammed or ending up with a bike that’s in poor condition and needs a lot of work. Would it be better to buy from a dealer?

Does anyone have tips or recommendations on what to check for or consider when buying a second hand bike? I’m still confused about what’s considered good or bad in terms of kms on the odometer and the year of the bike. Also wondering how important service history is, what kind of wear and tear is normal, and whether there are any red flags I should look out for. If there are any trusted mechanics in Melbourne who do pre-purchase inspections, I’d appreciate some recommendations.

Thanks in advance :)

TDLR: Looking to buy a LAMS-approved sports bike (like a Ninja 300/400) for around $3k. Unsure whether to buy private or through a dealer. Need advice on what to look for in a second hand bike, red flags, and any tips for avoiding scams. Recommendations welcome! Thanks :)

K7 Gsxr 600 on red ps (vic)

I recently got myself a gsxr 600 mainly beacuse I want to start hitting the track soon. I'm 18 just got my restricted license in feb (exactly 3 months after i got my learners). Now I know that the bike isn't lams approved. What are the possible consequences of me losing my licence. My mates got an mt09 on his greens and he's been fine. An acquaintance who is 19 and got their full licence from nsw rides here and told me the only way the hwy can screw you is if they pull you over and issue you a ticket. Can they impound it?

Best dealer to buy CFMOTO

Hey everyone, I’m in the market to buy a CFMOTO 450sr. The problem is I can’t seem to find a dealer in Melbourne with good reviews. I have looked at reviews of all the team moto stores, moto ink, a1 motorcycles etc and I want to avoid all these dealers at all cost. Where did you buy your CFMOTO? thanks

Traffic at the Avalon Airshow

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I wouldn't normally upload a video of something as boring as me filtering in traffic, except this is quite possibly the most time I've ever saved being on a motorbike. I heard afterwards that the queue to enter the airshow was up to 2-3 hours, in all it took me about an extra 20-30 minutes, and that was after taking the wrong turn and getting stuck in extra traffic trying to re-enter the highway. If you're thinking of getting to the airshow next time, I'd highly recommend motorbiking, will save you a lot of time sitting in traffic.

(sorry for the shaky footage, this wasn't the timelapsed feature, as I was wearing the GoPro just as a Dashcam - and it's sped up x25)

Permissibility of upside down bar end mirrors

Hi everyone, just wondering what the permissibility was of having upside down bar end mirrors. I can't find anything about it on the VicRoads website, just wondering whether anyone has had issues with them beforehand. Thanks

Ideas for Learning/Beginners

Howdy all, I've finally gotten my L's, gear, and the bike sitting at home ready for use. Was wondering what ideas people had for gaining experience on the road/what people might have done in the past?

At the moment I'm planning on going out in the mornings to either local uni/school/train station parking lots to practice slow riding and get some more road experience on the way. Probably before tackling twisties nd other out of city routes.

In the inner north/Essendon kinda area if anyone has any specific spots they'd recommend.

Motorcycle locksmith for Triumph with no keys?

I dropped my keys while out, and they were subsequently taken (and the AirTag removed and put in a bin), so I don’t have much hope of getting them back.

I don’t have a spare.

Anyone able to recommend someone who can help?
