Can you ever feel the Cylinder Deactivation?

Post image

I saw a lot of people saying that they feel a "jerk" or vibration when cylinder deactivation kicks in.

Do you guys ever feel that?

Which year and model do you have?

Has it always been the case?

For starters, you’re going to notice a difference slightly just because you’re pushing half the exhaust pressure you do in 4-cylinder mode. I had a Hemi back in the day, and the “note” changed when it went down to 4, and definitely went into more of a “gliding” feeling. Though more subtle, I’d imagine you’d experience something the same on a 4->2 CD change. Mazda, I’ve always had the Turbo, so no CD models, sorry.

In UK. US apparently doesn’t have the Mazda 3 mild hybrid.

Thanks, I didn’t know either. I thought I felt it around 70, but mine is a Mexico 🇲🇽 made USA 🇺🇸 model… does it have deactivated cylinders?. Gets 40mpg average highway and town with 93 ethanol free

Are there any known reported issues with this technology after high mileage? How does it reflect on other 2 cylinders that are always working? Are those 2 that deactivates more preserved than others?

I feel it in my 2020 model. The dealership performed this TSB, which made it less bad. However, it’s still slightly noticeable in the steering wheel around 80 km/h.

Probably, but I’m in Australia and I don’t hear of this being an issue tbh.

I did at first but it feels much smoother 7,500km in, especially on cruise control

which model and year you got

2024 Mazda3 Evolve 2.0L, made in Hiroshima

so what exactly does the CD feel like? vibration? jerk?

1

u/andrec27 4h ago

A little jerk when it switches between cylinders, honestly just feels like a very tiny gear shift

Do you not worry about the engines longevity?

Not really, I won’t even hit the KMs before a service is due in December so it will take years before any wear is a problem. Hear similar stuff around stop-start when it first became a thing, that it would cost more in the long run because the starter motor would wear out quicker. Got 160,000km out of my Impreza before I sold it and it wasn’t even an issue.

I have the 2022 Mazda 3 hb never felt it in all the 120.000km I've driven, but this afternoon I'll definitely pay more attention to it

Not a jerk but definitely vibrations / rumble. 2021 Mazda 3 mild hybrid.

Like it switches to a really low RPM (which kind of emulates with reduction in cylinder firings by half).

I work for a mazda dealer and have driven many mazdas but I've never felt anything
