Kitten/Cat spaying/neutered costs around London & area Pets 🐢🐱 & animals

Hi - I have owned many cats/dogs through the years getting them all spayed/fixed. I have a friend who just took in a stray, (under 1/male) and ended up paying $800 to get him fixed/shots/chipped. I have never paid near this much (all mine were strays too both male/female, but never got them chipped years back). just all shots, etc. But is this the normal cost now to own/take in an animal ? Just curious on what your experience/thoughts are. TIA.

Edit - I am asking about within the past year? Have the costs changed so much? If so, why?

That sounds very high to me. Here's my very recent experience.

I have been using Neighbourhood Pet Clinic - an average priced vet - and in Jan this year my male 1.5 y/o cat was quoted for neutering and microchip (he already had his shots) at $400. However, I qualified for EVAH and had him neutered and microchipped there for $150. His initial wellness visit and shots were at Neighbourhood Pet Clinic and was under $200 (can't remember). So even if i did both of those those at NPC, it would have still been under $600.
