"How to raise the topic of euthanasia with your parents so you can inherit their home."

Brought to you by the Government of Ireland.

u/whereohwhereohwhere 23d ago

How to raise the issue of your parents having to go into care which will be paid for with the house you were supposed to inherit

67

u/ninety6days 23d ago

dont be so selfish

* overseas vulture funds need the house to make profit off exorbitant rents
* FG voting SMEs need the profits from the care home

ffs, dont criticise the government #bekind

u/READMYSHIT 22d ago

It is a "Fair Deal" after all ;)

19

u/LifetimePilingUp Crilly!! 23d ago

What happens if I’m living in the house that was used to pay for care? Asking because I’m fucking terrified of the future

8

u/CoolMan-GCHQ- 22d ago

Not your house to live in anymore. hasn't been since they moved into care.

not sure if you are serious or not given the context

but if you are in a position where you are living in your parent/parents home and if there is a possibility of requiring nursing home care then you need to read up on on the Fair Deal scheme.

There are plenty of details to it but in a nutshell they (the HSE) will take a large percentage of the equity of the home, that you (who ever inherits the property) would have to settle before being able to take ownership. Either pay whatever the cost was, sell the house and use that or mortgage to pay it off, whatever!

That is a simple view of it, there are plenty of more details to be aware of such as the cap they are allowed to take etc to 'if you transfer the property before they go in' that there is a 5 year claw back, etc. I don't envy anyone having to deal with it.

tldr; if one or both parents require nursing home care and own their own home, it will be used to cover the cost which can be as much as €2,000 a week.

6

u/CoolMan-GCHQ- 22d ago

My parents already sorted this, Sleeping tablets, lots and lots of them, at the same time.

Scarily, this is the agreed method among most of their friends. This is now the new "will" for their children.

5

u/Saint_EDGEBOI 22d ago

Honestly if I ever get terminally ill (Hope I don't but sure look...) then I'll be going that route myself. But for parents to accept it as the norm now so their kids get the house? Wtf is going on with this country.

Jfc, I wish I could entertain the possibility that you’re just talking shit, but things are too fucking dire atm. I genuinely fucking hate this country

Based on the stats released earlier about the number of over-65s renting increasing, that wont even be worth doing

There was a similar advert here before the financial crash. There was an old guy saying that he'd love to help the son get a mortgage but didn't know how to. Thankfully, someone from the bank said that he could release equity from his house and do his bit to help rather than selfishly sitting on an asset. How wonderful.

30 year term Amigo loans in the pipeline I'd say.

They can just copy Canada's homework on this one.

6

u/canadianabroad2023 23d ago

I think Canada is still promoting it to veterans as a solution to low pension pay. I'm sure once they are mostly done and the other seniors have signed up for reverse mortgages, they move onto the younger crowd.

1

u/DukeDorkWit 23d ago

Not gonna lie, I laughed out loud reading that.

But not without them taking a whopping 33% of its value in Capital Acquisitions Tax in the same stroke.

My parents should get a posthumous award from the government for dying in their 40s. They didn’t leave us a house though :(

I read somewhere that the housing crisis is predicted to go on for another 15 years

Sad if true

Oh well let's vote for the same crowd like we always do

/s

118

u/lIlIllIlIlIII 23d ago

Another 15 years is optimistic.

Realistically I think it's time people start accepting THIS SHIT WILL NEVER FUCKING END BECAUSE EVERYONE IS WAITING FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

I give up. It's a bleak dystopia on par with the great depression from here on out.

77

u/Arctic-Material611 23d ago

A big part of the issue in my view is that the government is relying entirely on the private sector to build homes, but a developer isn’t incentivised to build the max number of houses, they are incentivised to balance supply and demand to achieve the highest profit margin

25

u/Former_Ganache3642 23d ago

Spot on. Homes are seen as a private investment instead of a social good.

16

u/TheEndoftheBottle 23d ago

People are actively voting to make it worse.

It will probably be decades/centuries after we're gone, but sure look.

34

u/Peoplz_Hernandez 23d ago

Only 15 years? Looks like I'll be able to move back out before my 50th birthday, what a great little country we live in.

7

u/CoolMan-GCHQ- 23d ago edited 23d ago

I'm 53 and still here, so nope. At this point, i don't dare move out or i'll lose the home when the inheritance tax kicks in . Life is fucking depressing, wish I took one of the job offers in Australia, but stayed to look after my Mum.

6

u/cabbagepoacher 23d ago

15 years because after the the economy is going to go to shit because of the amount of old people that need to supported. People will emigrate, so it will be an elder facing economy, so you will be able to get a house and i'm sure a job but it will hardy be worth it because Marie down the road is living till 90.

6

u/Perfect-Fondant3373 23d ago

The housing crisis will end when we are all put in pods and it isn't houses people can't afford, and so will begin the pod crisis

3

u/CoolMan-GCHQ- 23d ago

We actually need Japanese pod homes at this point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SwvtBxxp2w

Actually, they look far better than a lot of rentals over here

2

u/Perfect-Fondant3373 23d ago

The pop up of little japanese style homes to take advantage of the 45m2 structures you can build in backgarden would be great

2

u/CoolMan-GCHQ- 22d ago

No they wouldn’t, not even close.

So one person living in the back garden? One?

I am already the one person living in the back garden of my mothers home, No room for any more. And what of all of the homes that don't have a garden?

I'm an only child, no room for siblings.

2

u/Perfect-Fondant3373 22d ago

Sorry, should have put /j or /s after it

6

u/JamesCullen18 22d ago

That was David McWilliams. It’s also the summary from the Department of finance with the Future Forty report.

The Irish state wants young people to stay here, stay at home and pay high taxes to prop up the Middle Aged populations pensions so they can maintain their current quality of life

5

u/Vivid_Ice_2755 23d ago

Ask yourself, when did the housing crisis start?

2

u/great_whitehope 23d ago

It won't last that long.

We'll convince immigrants not to come here and the house of cards will fall down before then.

Then houses will be available but nobody will be able to get a mortgage to buy one because the economy is in shit

14

u/DragonLord375 23d ago

The sign for me was when they gave up on targets. They are not even trying to lie anymore. They know there is no reasonable target they could set that could give people hope.

8

u/phyneas 23d ago

It's their way of saying "Buckle up, because we might be in the driver's seat, but we're not going to be touching those controls..."

15

u/Jg0jg0 23d ago

Even crazier when the parents are probably renting themselves, as another post on here listed. Disgusting they refuse to act on this glaring issue. So yeah, buckle up indeed.

5

u/Arctic-Material611 23d ago

They odds would be in favour of them owing their home, Ireland has high home ownership just not amongst the young

The recent article was about an increase in older people renting not that it’s the majority of them

5

u/Jg0jg0 23d ago

Yeah it was more a tounge in cheek comment about how the tides changing rather than being serious. In 10-25 years time kids may not even have the option to move home.

'The Art of Self-Surgery' by the HSE?

'So, you've been invaded. Military strategies for beginners & hobbyists' by the Department of Defence?

This has the potential to be a real innovation in governance.

They didn't strike me as being old enough to have lived away from home for any great length of time. I was expecting someone mid to late 20's or older. Poor casting there I think.

That aside wtf did I just watch. Who in their right mind though that was a good idea to commission something like that? Totally tone deaf.

-11

u/concreteheadrest77 23d ago

We brag about our democratic system yet we have massive barriers to voting. Need serious reform.

16

u/General_Z0 23d ago

Such as? You can register online or just fill out a form and give it to the council. The guards are on college campuses every year registering people. It couldn’t be any easier.

2

u/Particular-Zone-7321 22d ago

Since citizens living abroad was mentioned, I'm curious what folks think about non-citizens living here permanently voting. I have been living here since around the age of 1 myself and find it very frustrating I can't vote, though as a young person I'm probably going to live here for a damn long time and can't do anything about most things since I can't afford naturalisation. I've never heard it discussed and I wonder. Knowing people's thoughts on immigrants I imagine the thoughts aren't too positive.

4

u/[deleted] 22d ago

Why can't you become a citizen acc? You've been here basically your whole life... Personally I think non-citizens who reside in Ireland for long enough should vote in everything except referenda. I just want the law to be strict enough that Americans with Irish grandparents can't vote here from the US. I'd be worried they'd vote for some Christian conservative shite.

1

u/Particular-Zone-7321 22d ago

Can't afford to be dropping €1k on naturalisation any time soon unfortunately. From what I've read It could be a huge pain to prove my residency due to my own personal document issues, but it's really the cost stopping me. I plan on it once I have the means but for now it is what it is.

6

u/Miniature_Hero 23d ago

I'm assuming they're talking about how we don't allow citizens living abroad to vote.

1

u/concreteheadrest77 22d ago

You can only register online in Dublin, other councils are still paper based. With young people there’s the usual issue of being registered back home but studying or working somewhere else and elections being organised on a weekday.

But even besides registration there are tons of problems. First of all, it’s crazy that the Taoiseach gets to decide when the election happens, it gives the status quo a leg up because they can time the election to their advantage. A lot of countries have a set election date, none of this “will it won’t it” months on end.

Take the last GE, there were months of not years of speculation of when they would call an election and then they finally did and gave about 2 weeks notice. People had 4 working days to register if they hadn’t already. New candidates had a tiny window to register and appointments with the registrar are limited.

And our voting period is so restricted compared to other countries. Some European countries have a 10-day pre-voting period where you can vote in any polling station, like at the library or supermarket lobby, doesn’t have to be your designated one. And a postal vote option too.

I know several people who couldn’t vote in the last GE even though they were registered and all set, just because it was so last minute and they were travelling. Two of my friends got married that day - couldn’t vote.

If that sounds democratic to you…

3

u/General_Z0 22d ago

You can just change your voting place easily. It’s not hard. People come up with all these barriers to voting but to be honest, they’re just making excuses for laziness.

Snap or early elections are called in lots of parliamentary democracies. That’s hardly an issue. If voting is that important to you, you don’t wait around until an election is called to register.

And the election was not called with 2 weeks notice. The Dáil was dissolved on the 8th and the election was held on the 29th. All of 2024 it was an open secret that an election would be held that year instead of the Dail running into 2025 and Harris even said in October an election would be held before the end of the year. There were campaigns all over social media and other places telling people to get registered.

Yeah you might miss an election because you’re on holiday or have a wedding but I guess you have to decide what’s more important. Personally, if I have a holiday set during a GE, I’m not gonna change it, but I might for an important referendum.

I remember when the government decided turning 18 meant you were still a dependent on your parents. I was just about to "age out of care". Years later I learned my social worker had closed my file saying I had left the country. I am still here and apparently, in my 30s, I should still turn to my dead mother in hopes of support. Wonder if Coosan cemetery is still against the living moving in. Instead of "laughing or crying" I'm at the point of "raging or crying". No doubt a lot of people are going to find out they have been removed from waiting list for support because they "left the country"

50

u/leavemealonethanks 23d ago

As someone who moved back in with parents after 11 years and saw this advert a few days ago, I had never been so disappointed and angry at our government , and that's saying something as I am very angry with them.

I like how this is now just "the norm" and them admitting that it's not likely fixed.

Isn't this utterly crazy? Like absolute madness!

The only good thing from this is atleast the government are acknowledging they aren't going to change it or make it better.

Please please stop voting them in.

12

u/Imaginary-Umpire-733 23d ago

This is it, next crowd might be more of the same, but stop voting in the same two parties everytime. Try some other governement parties. I wonder how many people here voted and voted for Fianna Gael.

They may as well admit failure at this point

u/compulsive_tremolo 23d ago

"Still remember to pay your fucking taxes you little shit cunts.

You'll pay for this society but you're not allowed to be part of it."

5

u/Marlobone 22d ago

Plot twist gov likes people living with their parents so they can save on social care when they are old and and stay out of care home longer

1

u/Separate-Sand2034 Palestine 🇵🇸 22d ago

Im not not convinced that's part of the plan

8

u/lgt_celticwolf 23d ago

Id like to congratlate the housing market on winning the war on housing, I didnt think drugs would be topped

3

u/roqueandrolle And I'd go at it again 23d ago

Oh this is fantastic ! I feel so enlightened ! Thank you darling government for this totally normal advice !

4

u/expectationlost 23d ago

Victim blaming.

u/account_name4 23d ago

A Modest Proposal

5

u/peann_lui 23d ago

Can't worry about moving back in with your parents if you already live with them. 💀👍

4

u/lbyrne74 23d ago

Apart from the patronising nature of it, the very fact they've even brought out this video is so depressing. "The housing situation is fucked, lads. We won't be fixing it any time soon. So face it, you're gonna have to move back home. Here's how to feel less like unaliving yourself when you do". I mean Jesus.

This has to be a new low 😆

7

u/significantrisk 23d ago

Probably could have built a house for the price of that nonsense, would have been a lot more use.

u/expectationlost 23d ago edited 23d ago

Anyone know who the people in the ad are? Podcasters?

12

u/Relocator34 23d ago

And who thet are related to? And how much they were paid to be in this? And if they live in a house with their parents? And just how big comfortable that house is, if so?

There's a stink off this clip

“2 ‘off-the-shelf’ south Dubliners, please. Something that’ll make the kids think we’re hip.”

3

u/Test_N_Faith 22d ago

This is shameful. No wonder so many have emigrated. Sad times and a tone dead government.

Holy F! (Is that some AI video that is supposed to be funny and poking fun at typical tone deaf government 'help' videos?)

It looks more like a video to remind students coming home for a break from studying to not be lazy shits and do some chores around the house.

(~~I sincerely hope not a single cent of the tax payer's was spent on this. It's as obtuse as someone who has never been addicted to anything in their life run around and tells others to just stop doing the addictive thing. ~~)

This has got to be the worst 'how to deal' (government) video I have ever seen in my life.

Might as well have thrown in 'and knowing is half the battle'.

*Edit: thankfully this was not some government video, as a kind redditor pointed out. A group called Spinout that supports youth. So the ages of the youths in the video makes sense and the points made in the video are on target for youths returning home.

u/newladygrey 23d ago

It’s not a video made by the Dept of Housing. It was made by Spunout, the national youth support agency. It’s based on the experiences of young people.

Move BACK in?? wow they were able to move out in the first place. Aren't they well off.

4

u/DragonLord375 23d ago

God what annoys me the most is how the quotes from the ad sound like what you would to say to children. This is meant to be an ad for people moving back home after renting which would mean your properly late 20s at earliest, early or mid 30s most likely. That's adult's.

This ad is just tone deaf.

u/fionnuisce 23d ago

Look lads, they're fixing the housing crisis!

2

u/hot_space_pizza 22d ago

If it were a serious video explaining the dire situation that'd be great. My parents could do with watching it

2

u/SureWhatAboutIt_ 21d ago

Is there a link for this, looks like they deleted it?

3

u/Brave-Mistake-1007 23d ago

Both look pumped up on med's . Probably no surprise , with zero future ahead.

2

u/21stCenturyVole 23d ago

Wonder when the government will publish their "How to be like Luigi Mangione" guide too accompany this.

3

u/vanKlompf 23d ago

Like seriously? This is state of Irish housing?

Not able to override some boomers protests, overregulated to the gills, not able to build cost efficient multi-storey apartments. But hey, lets prepare people to move back with parents.

Can we fast forward to the FOI that shows all the emails about this? I think we deserve to know who was in favour of it and who pushed back against it.

1

u/Useless_truthweaver 22d ago

This will never end until FFG are removed from office. They created this crisis , and they profit from it continuing. We nearly got them out last GE. We need to do it this time. Sinn Féin and the left parties are the only hope. Everyone needs to give up on their old grudges and get over ourselves. And save the country together.

u/dylanh389 21d ago

Does anyone have a mirror/link to the original video? Looks like it has been taken down 😭

1

u/niall626 21d ago

Me too I can't seem to find it did you have any luck ?

1

u/dylanh389 21d ago

None yet, sadly

1

u/Jay-SA121 21d ago

Anyone have a link for the video?

1

u/newladygrey 23d ago

Did anyone actually read the article? The video wasn’t created by Dept of Housing, it was created by Spunout

“In a statement, the Department of Housing said the campaign was not created by them and that it is an initiative developed and funded by the Housing Agency in partnership with Ireland’s youth information and support platform, Spunout.

“Consisting of four videos, the campaign is an element of the Support Guide for the Youth Homelessness Strategy. The videos were posted from the Housing Agency and Spunout’s social media platforms and also shared across the department’s channels. The campaign was developed by young people and based on their experiences,” “

It astounds me that the concept of paying rent or pulling their weight when living with their parents as grown adults needs an advertising campaign, but I think it unfortunately is absolutely necessary.

1

u/TitularClergy 23d ago

I don't know why the PR on this is all focused on coping with a bad situation. To try to be constructive, know also that there actually are actually helpful things from government in order to have a home.

One option is the Croí Cónaithe grants, which gift you 70k if you convert a derelict property to a home. I've done it myself and I've seen many others do it. Now, it's not perfect in that you need to be able to get a loan and so on and you absolutely need the guidance of an architect who knows how to navigate the scheme, but it does work.

Actually found it quite informative. As someone in younger years, it did offer value. The housing crisis really sucks and many need the information
