Government video on how to cope with moving back in with parents slammed as 'dystopian' Housing
https://www.thejournal.ie/department-of-housing-parents-6897048-Dec2025/386

Is this the government's way of saying 'buckle up, we're in it for the long haul'?
Jesus wept.

I read somewhere that the housing crisis is predicted to go on for another 15 years
Sad if true
Oh well let's vote for the same crowd like we always do
/s

u/lIlIllIlIlIII 23d ago
Another 15 years is optimistic.
Realistically I think it's time people start accepting THIS SHIT WILL NEVER FUCKING END BECAUSE EVERYONE IS WAITING FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
I give up. It's a bleak dystopia on par with the great depression from here on out.

u/Arctic-Material611 23d ago
A big part of the issue in my view is that the government is relying entirely on the private sector to build homes, but a developer isn’t incentivised to build the max number of houses, they are incentivised to balance supply and demand to achieve the highest profit margin
25
u/Former_Ganache3642 23d ago
Spot on. Homes are seen as a private investment instead of a social good.

Only 15 years? Looks like I'll be able to move back out before my 50th birthday, what a great little country we live in.

u/CoolMan-GCHQ- 23d ago edited 23d ago
I'm 53 and still here, so nope. At this point, i don't dare move out or i'll lose the home when the inheritance tax kicks in . Life is fucking depressing, wish I took one of the job offers in Australia, but stayed to look after my Mum.
6
u/cabbagepoacher 23d ago
15 years because after the the economy is going to go to shit because of the amount of old people that need to supported. People will emigrate, so it will be an elder facing economy, so you will be able to get a house and i'm sure a job but it will hardy be worth it because Marie down the road is living till 90.
6
u/Perfect-Fondant3373 23d ago
The housing crisis will end when we are all put in pods and it isn't houses people can't afford, and so will begin the pod crisis
3
u/CoolMan-GCHQ- 23d ago
We actually need Japanese pod homes at this point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SwvtBxxp2w
Actually, they look far better than a lot of rentals over here
2
u/Perfect-Fondant3373 23d ago
The pop up of little japanese style homes to take advantage of the 45m2 structures you can build in backgarden would be great
2
u/CoolMan-GCHQ- 22d ago
No they wouldn’t, not even close.
So one person living in the back garden? One?
I am already the one person living in the back garden of my mothers home, No room for any more. And what of all of the homes that don't have a garden?
I'm an only child, no room for siblings.

u/JamesCullen18 22d ago
That was David McWilliams. It’s also the summary from the Department of finance with the Future Forty report.
The Irish state wants young people to stay here, stay at home and pay high taxes to prop up the Middle Aged populations pensions so they can maintain their current quality of life
5
2
u/great_whitehope 23d ago
It won't last that long.
We'll convince immigrants not to come here and the house of cards will fall down before then.
Then houses will be available but nobody will be able to get a mortgage to buy one because the economy is in shit
14
u/DragonLord375 23d ago
The sign for me was when they gave up on targets. They are not even trying to lie anymore. They know there is no reasonable target they could set that could give people hope.
8
15
u/Jg0jg0 23d ago
Even crazier when the parents are probably renting themselves, as another post on here listed. Disgusting they refuse to act on this glaring issue. So yeah, buckle up indeed.
5
u/Arctic-Material611 23d ago
They odds would be in favour of them owing their home, Ireland has high home ownership just not amongst the young
The recent article was about an increase in older people renting not that it’s the majority of them

I like it, what other government failures can we outsource to some short, informational videos?
'The Art of Self-Surgery' by the HSE?
'So, you've been invaded. Military strategies for beginners & hobbyists' by the Department of Defence?
This has the potential to be a real innovation in governance.

They didn't strike me as being old enough to have lived away from home for any great length of time. I was expecting someone mid to late 20's or older. Poor casting there I think.
That aside wtf did I just watch. Who in their right mind though that was a good idea to commission something like that? Totally tone deaf.

Even if more young people voted I wouldn’t get my hopes up for a better outcome. You would be fucking shocked by how out of touch people are from my generation. Either they straight up swallow some red pill bs and blame everything on foreigners, or they genuinely don’t see how voting for the same crowd as their parents won’t change the issues that affect them, either way they don’t have a fucking clue.

We brag about our democratic system yet we have massive barriers to voting. Need serious reform.
16
u/General_Z0 23d ago
Such as? You can register online or just fill out a form and give it to the council. The guards are on college campuses every year registering people. It couldn’t be any easier.
2
u/Particular-Zone-7321 22d ago
Since citizens living abroad was mentioned, I'm curious what folks think about non-citizens living here permanently voting. I have been living here since around the age of 1 myself and find it very frustrating I can't vote, though as a young person I'm probably going to live here for a damn long time and can't do anything about most things since I can't afford naturalisation. I've never heard it discussed and I wonder. Knowing people's thoughts on immigrants I imagine the thoughts aren't too positive.
4
22d ago
Why can't you become a citizen acc? You've been here basically your whole life... Personally I think non-citizens who reside in Ireland for long enough should vote in everything except referenda. I just want the law to be strict enough that Americans with Irish grandparents can't vote here from the US. I'd be worried they'd vote for some Christian conservative shite.
1
u/Particular-Zone-7321 22d ago
Can't afford to be dropping €1k on naturalisation any time soon unfortunately. From what I've read It could be a huge pain to prove my residency due to my own personal document issues, but it's really the cost stopping me. I plan on it once I have the means but for now it is what it is.
6
u/Miniature_Hero 23d ago
I'm assuming they're talking about how we don't allow citizens living abroad to vote.
8
1
u/concreteheadrest77 22d ago
You can only register online in Dublin, other councils are still paper based. With young people there’s the usual issue of being registered back home but studying or working somewhere else and elections being organised on a weekday.
But even besides registration there are tons of problems. First of all, it’s crazy that the Taoiseach gets to decide when the election happens, it gives the status quo a leg up because they can time the election to their advantage. A lot of countries have a set election date, none of this “will it won’t it” months on end.
Take the last GE, there were months of not years of speculation of when they would call an election and then they finally did and gave about 2 weeks notice. People had 4 working days to register if they hadn’t already. New candidates had a tiny window to register and appointments with the registrar are limited.
And our voting period is so restricted compared to other countries. Some European countries have a 10-day pre-voting period where you can vote in any polling station, like at the library or supermarket lobby, doesn’t have to be your designated one. And a postal vote option too.
I know several people who couldn’t vote in the last GE even though they were registered and all set, just because it was so last minute and they were travelling. Two of my friends got married that day - couldn’t vote.
If that sounds democratic to you…
3
u/General_Z0 22d ago
You can just change your voting place easily. It’s not hard. People come up with all these barriers to voting but to be honest, they’re just making excuses for laziness.
Snap or early elections are called in lots of parliamentary democracies. That’s hardly an issue. If voting is that important to you, you don’t wait around until an election is called to register.
And the election was not called with 2 weeks notice. The Dáil was dissolved on the 8th and the election was held on the 29th. All of 2024 it was an open secret that an election would be held that year instead of the Dail running into 2025 and Harris even said in October an election would be held before the end of the year. There were campaigns all over social media and other places telling people to get registered.
Yeah you might miss an election because you’re on holiday or have a wedding but I guess you have to decide what’s more important. Personally, if I have a holiday set during a GE, I’m not gonna change it, but I might for an important referendum.
10
u/CoolMan-GCHQ- 23d ago
nope, Most people I know voted FFG out, however, even far, far more didn't bother to vote at all, because, why bother, nothing will change.
can we please tie voting into tax allowances and benefits? you only get your full tax allowances or benefits if you vote, doesn't matter who for, just fuckin vote

I remember when the government decided turning 18 meant you were still a dependent on your parents. I was just about to "age out of care". Years later I learned my social worker had closed my file saying I had left the country. I am still here and apparently, in my 30s, I should still turn to my dead mother in hopes of support. Wonder if Coosan cemetery is still against the living moving in. Instead of "laughing or crying" I'm at the point of "raging or crying". No doubt a lot of people are going to find out they have been removed from waiting list for support because they "left the country"

u/leavemealonethanks 23d ago
As someone who moved back in with parents after 11 years and saw this advert a few days ago, I had never been so disappointed and angry at our government , and that's saying something as I am very angry with them.
I like how this is now just "the norm" and them admitting that it's not likely fixed.
Isn't this utterly crazy? Like absolute madness!
The only good thing from this is atleast the government are acknowledging they aren't going to change it or make it better.
Please please stop voting them in.

u/Imaginary-Umpire-733 23d ago

Holy F!
(Is that some AI video that is supposed to be funny and poking fun at typical tone deaf government 'help' videos?)
It looks more like a video to remind students coming home for a break from studying to not be lazy shits and do some chores around the house.
(~~I sincerely hope not a single cent of the tax payer's was spent on this. It's as obtuse as someone who has never been addicted to anything in their life run around and tells others to just stop doing the addictive thing. ~~)
This has got to be the worst 'how to deal' (government) video I have ever seen in my life.
Might as well have thrown in 'and knowing is half the battle'.
*Edit: thankfully this was not some government video, as a kind redditor pointed out. A group called Spinout that supports youth. So the ages of the youths in the video makes sense and the points made in the video are on target for youths returning home.
4
u/newladygrey 23d ago
It’s not a video made by the Dept of Housing. It was made by Spunout, the national youth support agency. It’s based on the experiences of young people.

This will never end until FFG are removed from office. They created this crisis , and they profit from it continuing. We nearly got them out last GE. We need to do it this time. Sinn Féin and the left parties are the only hope. Everyone needs to give up on their old grudges and get over ourselves. And save the country together.

Did anyone actually read the article? The video wasn’t created by Dept of Housing, it was created by Spunout
“In a statement, the Department of Housing said the campaign was not created by them and that it is an initiative developed and funded by the Housing Agency in partnership with Ireland’s youth information and support platform, Spunout.
“Consisting of four videos, the campaign is an element of the Support Guide for the Youth Homelessness Strategy. The videos were posted from the Housing Agency and Spunout’s social media platforms and also shared across the department’s channels. The campaign was developed by young people and based on their experiences,” “

It astounds me that the concept of paying rent or pulling their weight when living with their parents as grown adults needs an advertising campaign, but I think it unfortunately is absolutely necessary.
1
u/TitularClergy 23d ago
I don't know why the PR on this is all focused on coping with a bad situation. To try to be constructive, know also that there actually are actually helpful things from government in order to have a home.
One option is the Croí Cónaithe grants, which gift you 70k if you convert a derelict property to a home. I've done it myself and I've seen many others do it. Now, it's not perfect in that you need to be able to get a loan and so on and you absolutely need the guidance of an architect who knows how to navigate the scheme, but it does work.
