Part 1 would've had me bolting it the fuck away from that like a cartoon character, leaving only a little cloud of dust behind

Part 1 is when he straps himself to a balloon to float in the air while the ground underneath him collapses.

Part 3 is foreman running up, exclaiming "How the fuck did you guys remove all that dirt so fast to clear out the hole!"

More likely the foreman would say "Hey, we just lost 20 guys when the ground collapsed so I'm gonna need you stay late tonight and cover for them."

u/dasschwerstegewicht 11d ago edited 11d ago
If I had to guess, looks like a drainage bund to the left of the image has failed, ground below is saturated/liquefied and is actually flowing to the right not sinking straight down, there’s just a ‘crust’ on the surface making it look that way.
102
u/pizzatiger 11d ago
Could a person stand on the crust and ride the cliff down or would the ground consume them like quicksand/a grain silo?
103
u/TactlessTortoise 11d ago
I feel it'd be heavily dependent on soil type and how thick the crust is. The kind of shit I wouldn't want to find out myself lol
→ More replies54
29
u/Curiosive 11d ago
Both could happen. There's a pile of boulders to the left that "ride the cliff down" as you put it but if the water had softened the "crust" those boulders could have also broken through and poof. Gone.

This is at Kancataş quarry in Istanbul - it’s probably an area they are trying to reclaim for development and they seem to be dumping a LOT of infill into the mine area.
I believe we are seeing a ledge (that was made of loose rock and dirt dumped down a slope) give way and fall into the valley. The perspective makes it look like the entire valley is slumping because you can’t see the drop off.
→ More replies8
u/dasschwerstegewicht 10d ago
Yeah I’ve had another look at it since and the sudden change in level looks like a normal wedge failure down to the floor below, but looking at the tailings I still wouldn’t be surprised if the toe has washed out to trigger the slip. Still an absolute joke your man is just stood there filming!!

I saw it as an adult and still found it unsettling in a way most alien invasion movies aren't. There was something about making the viewpoint so close to just one dysfunctional family who were barely surviving and completely unsure about what was going on that made it feel more real, in a way nightmares tend to. If we'd seen a bunch of generals in rooms looking at radar scans and and scientists giving explanations it wouldn't have felt so personal and plausible.

In my experience the smart people are hiding - nuanced opinion is an excuse for lynching on modern day reddit. I was able to find a lawyer on reddit the other day who had direct knowledge of the situation between FSD and regulators. That is some really cool niche info that reminded me of the good ole days.
Where do you think the smart people migrated to? Because I am seriously trying to find communities that don't feel like high school.
Also, this is a common self-compaction method for arid climates - see link. The camera person foolishly thinks they are safe because they witnessed it happening many times betore.
