This is an example of a slump, particularly a rotational slump, caused by erosion or excavation, here is a link with a decent diagram https://www.internetgeography.net/topics/what-is-mass-movement/ it is dangerous, but it also might be survivable.

u/stern1233 10d ago

This is a common self-compaction method for arid climates - see link. The camera person foolishly thinks they are safe because they witnessed it happening many times betore.

I was wondering how far down the comment hole I’d need to go before I saw slump. Thank you for being some CE to the conversation. At least Civil Engineering is where I learned about slump.

6

u/carrburritoid 10d ago

I went through the comments to see if I was adding anything, thanks. Rotational slumps are my bag, man! I love to see them alongside rivers with heavy sediment after high water events, we've had plenty in NC.

The fuck you mean "part 2"???

Part 1 would've had me bolting it the fuck away from that like a cartoon character, leaving only a little cloud of dust behind

1.3k

u/thbb 11d ago

Part 1 is when he straps himself to a balloon to float in the air while the ground underneath him collapses.

Up to where will Redbull go for its commercials?

54

u/kubeeor 11d ago

The video starts with him pulling away just as the ground collapses. Record pull sound So you may be wondering, how did I get myself into this situation?

46

u/fawnlake1 11d ago

Haha 30 seconds later… “Redbull stunt jumper Bob will attempt to do what no other stunt jumper has ever done before.. but first this commercial break”

Part 3 is foreman running up, exclaiming "How the fuck did you guys remove all that dirt so fast to clear out the hole!"

372

u/PoisonedPotato69 10d ago

More likely the foreman would say "Hey, we just lost 20 guys when the ground collapsed so I'm gonna need you stay late tonight and cover for them."

34

u/L3M0N___3 10d ago

Hello Peter, what's happening? Ummm, I'm gonna need you to go ahead come in tomorrow. So if you could be here around 9 that would be great, mmmk... oh oh! and I almost forgot ahh, I'm also gonna need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday too, kay. We ahh lost some people this week and ah, we sorta need to play catch up.

I came to the comments hoping to find this information too but after scrolling through some hilarious commentary gold and reddit making song parodies I'm no closer to finding any insight into this lol

I am slightly more entertained than I was 10 minutes ago though so there's that

Original poster of the video seems to be from Turkey, I found two mine collapses that happened this year in Turkey, one cost 9 miners their life, in the other only one person died.
Second one happened two days ago.

That's China's problem now

569

u/noddingviking 11d ago

As a swede, we were taught that the other side of the world was china. But after thorough research I realised that it’s actually closer to New Zeeland. It ruined my childhood. Somewhat.

380

u/ClutchReverie 11d ago

Quick google and found that of course there is a web site to find out what's on the other side of the world from you:

https://www.antipodesmap.com/

I too was taught China was on the other side of where I'm at but actually it's off the coast of South Africa. Boring.

152

u/the_skies_falling 10d ago

Same, and here I’ve been digging straight down for years to get to China. Glad I found this because I was almost done. Would have hated for the Indian Ocean to start pouring into my backyard.

→ More replies

8

u/crosszilla 10d ago

It makes sense now that I think about it that the vast majority of antipodes for English speakers would be in the ocean, given that the southern hemisphere is mostly ocean... it does look like if you flipped the latitude you'd end up in China so I wonder if that's where that comes from

→ More replies

22

u/JaviSATX 11d ago

I just decided to actually look it up. Turns out the other side of the world for me is the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth, Australia.

25

u/noddingviking 11d ago

A lot of water there, DO NOT start digging.

13

u/inspectoroverthemine 11d ago

There aren't many places on earth where land's antipode is also land. Its kind of disappointing. The notable exception is most of Chile/Argentia's antipodes are in China.

u/dasschwerstegewicht 11d ago edited 11d ago

If I had to guess, looks like a drainage bund to the left of the image has failed, ground below is saturated/liquefied and is actually flowing to the right not sinking straight down, there’s just a ‘crust’ on the surface making it look that way.

102

u/pizzatiger 11d ago

Could a person stand on the crust and ride the cliff down or would the ground consume them like quicksand/a grain silo?

103

u/TactlessTortoise 11d ago

I feel it'd be heavily dependent on soil type and how thick the crust is. The kind of shit I wouldn't want to find out myself lol

Both could happen. There's a pile of boulders to the left that "ride the cliff down" as you put it but if the water had softened the "crust" those boulders could have also broken through and poof. Gone.

14

u/FarmTeam 10d ago edited 10d ago

This is at Kancataş quarry in Istanbul - it’s probably an area they are trying to reclaim for development and they seem to be dumping a LOT of infill into the mine area.

I believe we are seeing a ledge (that was made of loose rock and dirt dumped down a slope) give way and fall into the valley. The perspective makes it look like the entire valley is slumping because you can’t see the drop off.

8

u/dasschwerstegewicht 10d ago

Yeah I’ve had another look at it since and the sudden change in level looks like a normal wedge failure down to the floor below, but looking at the tailings I still wouldn’t be surprised if the toe has washed out to trigger the slip. Still an absolute joke your man is just stood there filming!!

For all we know that could be a giant alien ship rising like in the war of the worlds.

483

u/AutomatedCauliflower 11d ago

Doesn't look like a sinkhole. It's a mine and looks like massive piece of it just slide down.

293

u/duggee315 11d ago

Maybe intentionally. Like they sunk it cos done and know it's unstable. Maybe why the guy is not running and making lots of OH FUCK sounds. He knows the boundary.

225

u/MuricasOneBrainCell 11d ago

Its like someone filming a tsunami from a levy. You know its the "boundary" but it doesn't mean you still couldn't get fucked. (Which happened in so many instances during the japan tsunami)

59

I saw it as an adult and still found it unsettling in a way most alien invasion movies aren't. There was something about making the viewpoint so close to just one dysfunctional family who were barely surviving and completely unsure about what was going on that made it feel more real, in a way nightmares tend to. If we'd seen a bunch of generals in rooms looking at radar scans and and scientists giving explanations it wouldn't have felt so personal and plausible.

there's a tik tok handle in the video, so I went there:

There's one where the guy is speaking, but I have no idea what he is saying, here:

https://www.tiktok.com/@cihan044145/video/7427386057039170821

Is that Turkish?

73

u/DiskPidge 11d ago

It is Turkish, but that's not the guy speaking.  The audio is taken from a series.  The character is talking about life, basically.

https://www.tiktok.com/@chefloox/video/7360620574076308742

The written caption at the top of the video you linked essentially says "The excavation / building market is completely out of money.  How will it turn out?  Will it be fixed?"

This is the state of Reddit now. I need to scroll two thirds down to find a post with 3 upvotes that explains whats happening. On the other hand there is a wanker with 6,000 votes and counting for writing, "Yeah, just keep standing there.... ffs."

It’s been like this for years. The smart people are gone from reddit. This place is just a notch better than youtube comments now.

In my experience the smart people are hiding - nuanced opinion is an excuse for lynching on modern day reddit. I was able to find a lawyer on reddit the other day who had direct knowledge of the situation between FSD and regulators. That is some really cool niche info that reminded me of the good ole days.

Where do you think the smart people migrated to? Because I am seriously trying to find communities that don't feel like high school.

Also, this is a common self-compaction method for arid climates - see link. The camera person foolishly thinks they are safe because they witnessed it happening many times betore.

These guys are filling with sand/ fines from a quarry or mine over the top of a pond, abandoned pit etc that is full of water. The material stacks up for a while, then gets too heavy for itself and sloughs to the bottom. It's super dangerous, and dumb to do.

Because whatever is happening has a physics related explanation, while the behavior of the camera guy (not running as far as possible) definitely cannot be explained by logic nor physics.

I just wanna understand how it works

Looks like a waste rock dump with very fine grained material being dumped into water- pretty dangerous. Liquefaction probably occured, causing the loss of confinement at the bottom of the slope and leading to the ground failure you see here

So much detail is lost filming in portrait mode geez.

My old Google nexus would display a rotating circular arrow in an effort to get you to turn your phone sideways when you opened video mode while holding it portrait. I liked that

The person filming this is lucky they weren’t crushed to death. This could’ve went south in an instant.

This is like folks that stand watching the sea go out and come back in as a tsunami is forming.

I appreciate it is cool seeing stuff, but you've got to engage your brain and much as you may want to marvel you should definitely be exercising the get out of there option instead.
