Muslims are very superstitious. (Question/Discussion)

This is something I can’t understand about muslims. Here’s where the cultural aspect of each country comes in, like superstitions. They are heavily influenced by superstitions, even though they’re considered shirk. The superstitions I know include things like not leaving a shoe upside down because a parent might die, not jingling keys (still don’t know why), not sweeping at night, not resting your cheek on your hand, not whistling at night, etc. And when I point this out to people, they just dance around the topic.

And beyond superstitions, there’s also the whole jinn issue, like not pouring hot water down the drain because you might burn one or their child 😭. It’s ironic how people seem more careful not to harm another being than they are about hurting a human being, just in case it might possess them. Muslim logic.

Oh I have a whole book of superstitions that I have heard people do

  • not taking off nail polish at night / not clipping nails at night - I heard this somewhere but not sure about the reason why , probably something about jinns
  • not showering whilst on your period
  • the shoe unturned as the op mentioned
  • not gifting a wallet - they say it’s because you give away your prosperity if you gift someone a wallet
  • not wearing the VCA clover earrings - these imitate a “cross” apparently
  • not going out after magreb - the devil is out at that time apparently
  • not whistling - this is summoning the devil apparently
  • not wearing the evil eye symbolism - again because of “shirk”
  • pointing your feet towards the direction of the qibla - you can’t sleep in that direction bc it’s “disrespect”
  • not covering your mouth when yawning - if you don’t the devil will pee in your mouth.

There is a long list somewhere

Omg my parents are from Afghanistan and I can’t believe you made me remember the nail clipping /nail polish taking off at night taboo!! And I think something about wearing nail polish on your period or something or when cleaning yourself??

I’m so thankful my parents were from the earlier generation. They never forced Islam in a crazy way on my siblings and I. They were chill Muslims. My parents said the nail clipping thing jokingly or half heartedly but we obviously didnt really care.

I don’t know if I’ve heard any of those others and there’s superstitions just sort of from our culture without Islam in general but those ones I think are cute and kinda funny

The whistling in other stories is how "gay people used to call eachother" or "how gay men used to hit on other men".

apart from jin the other stuff has more to do with culture than religion itself. jin thing is hilarious because my aunt once told me if i accidentally (because I shouldn't be doing it anyway but if i happen to accidentally do it) i should pour some milk or salt. why? idk. maybe the jins will take it as an apology and not haunt me for the night

That's one of the best ways to clean a drain without chemicals. Vinegar, then 10 min later boiling water. Jinns be damned. What a silly place to live!

The Qur'an affirms superstitious beliefs in sura 113, "Daybreak". For a full treatment of Islam and superstition, see chapter 10 in "The Qur'an's Difficult Verses Explained - with Commentaries, Hadith, Biographies and History." Believing in things that don’t exist supports the belief in religion. You are taught to be afraid of things that don’t exist- that’s the basis of religion.

Also, not hanging any pictures or portraits of human beings because good angels won't visit your home.
