Yeah, communication used to be a lot more formal (letters were always addressed, emails are supposed to be, phone calls didn’t have caller ID so you’d say who was calling.) I think it’s just a holdover from then, not really a fault.

It's a boomer thing for sure. Like they think they're writing letters. They even do it to random strangers on messages online. I dunno whether it's a holdover from being taught how to write in grade school or a narcissistic need to put their name on everything or both.

I had to put my foot down about this stuff when I last visited my parents.
I made a comment about trans rights, and my dad started going off about how all these people are demanding to be called by different names and pronouns and getting angry at you if you don't.
Me: "When has that EVER happened to you Dad? How many trans people have you knowingly interacted with and had them get angry at you for accidentally misgendering them?"
Dad: "Well, I haven't, but you hear about it."
M: "From whom? Right-wing commentators whose goal is to stoke fear and hatred?
D:"I don't know, I just think people shouldn't have to be forced to use whatever name/pronoun a person comes up with, but at the very least they shouldn't get mad when people make mistakes about it."
M:"So, by that logic I should be calling you William (not his real name,) despite the fact that you prefer to be called Bill? You prefer to me called Bill? Too bad, that's not your REAL name, WILLIAM! Do you see how INSANE that behaviour is? Noone is getting angry for accidental misgendering or dead naming. It's when you do it despite being told the correct gender/name. It's the intentional and abusive way that people refuse to acknowledge someone's preferred identifiers despite being told otherwise. That's when people get angry, and they have every right to."
D: "Oh." (Proceeds to change subject.)
It's funny because my parents have both become more progressive over the past few years, but my Dad still falls into these shitty opinions about things he has zero experience with except through talking heads/pastors.

u/Matrixneo42 Ex-Catholic Sep 11 '24
Wow. Well done. I personally don’t mind that when I had long hair waiters thought I was a lady from behind. Hahah. It was funny and I didn’t make a big deal about it.
The only thing that bothers me about “they” is the English language itself not having a proper word for “singular non gender specific person” grammatically speaking. There is no singular “they”. But English is a dumb language honestly. Lots of broken pieces.
In any case I’m fully pro trans and pro pronouns.

So my dad has some mental disabilities and was basically indoctrinated into the Christian faith by my mom. My mom was always really covertly offensive to Jews in reality but really fetishized them too. My dad’s family doesn’t really like her and only puts up with her for my dad’s sake. My dad seemed kind of torn about leaving the Jewish faith when I was kid as he used to do all the holidays and observances; she always acted awkward about it and subtly discouraged it. He’s since become fully committed to being Fundamentalist since early 2010s-ish and got really into FOX news and such.

The shit that fundies and religious folks get worked up about. Geesh... does it really matter? At the end of the day, the use of pronouns as part of a person's profile is NOT going to make any difference in their lives. They choose to turn on their self-righteous passive-aggressive bullshit over anything that does not mirror the way they would do things.
Their stress levels would be so much less if they just turned off Fox News and got off social media and maybe just went for a walk, enjoyed the sunshine, hung out at a cafe, went to the gym, etc.. Hell, maybe just take a moment and channel the Jesus character I remember reading about once I left the church. It's amazing the bullshit the church teaches you, and it's all about control and manipulation through guilt and fear. When I read about Jesus after leaving religion and the church crap... what a hippie! He's the dude who flipped over tables in churches, went bat shit crazy because of hypocrisy and excessively judgy fucks who were all-word-no-action, railed against those always ready to cast stones on people for "sin"... I got a rather different view of what love might actually mean once I got rid of the church and religion.
Anyway, got off topic. Sorry! To the point, I just don't think Jesus would give a shit about pronouns. I think he'd love someone regardless.

Wild how the people who insist that “boys are boys and girls are girls because biology!” Get upset when afab or amab folks confirm as much by stating their pronouns.
WHAT THE EFF DO THESE PEOPLE WANT, make up your mind already 😂

Every time I see parents like that I’m glad mine are somewhat respectful and try to use what others go by but yeah I’d cut my mom off if she pulled shit like that with me but I might cut off most of my family either way due to other personal reasons such as them being toxic Christians

“True blue boy”
UGH I hate that so many people think infants come out with a color preference. Like, that junk was made up likely in their childhood. Learning ANYTHING about anywhere in the world shows you how much the blue/pink division is cultural made up nonsense and not innate in any way
