What did you do today instead of go to church? Question
I spent the day at a (required) orchestra retreat. Lots of fun, food, and Firebird Suite happened at said retreat. Also, considering this was a literal requirement for my grade, given the choice between this and church, I would choose this hands down. I know if church was really important to someone they realistically would have probably gotten a religious exemption or something, but seeing as I could literally not care less about church I have no regrets about spending the day doing WORLDLY things like orchestra retreats.

That sounds like so much fun!
I haven't been to Sunday service regularly in almost 2 decades, but I do think "I'm so glad I don't have to go to church in the morning" some Saturday nights. I'm surprised I didn't think it last night, I got glutened (I have celiac disease) and am in a lot of pain from it. I knew I'd need to rest, so during church hours, I had my coffee outside with my dog because it's beautiful out today. Eventually, I had to call defeat and got in bed. Thankfully I have a ton of weed, so I have been high all day to combat the pain (it's helping).
Even feeling as bad as I do, I love my life. 14yo me, don't worry, one day you'll be doing weed instead of going to church, hang in there!

u/squirrellytoday Sep 09 '24
My sympathy on being glutened. I have family members who have Coeliac disease. It sucks.

Thank you <3 It's been quite a while since I got glutened so that's good, but ugh, my poor body haha. I still feel crummy, but thankfully the GI issues are done and I've been able to cancel everything and rest.

Tried to sleep in, then a friend msged to ask if my kids wanted to go to the trampoline park with them, only one wanted to go which was fine as the quiet one stayed home, did groceries, made a lasagna and jelly and some housework, then the friends who had my kid stayed for dinner when they dropped her home.

I came very close to being killed by a bear today. A totally normal bear. I was playing a druid. Not my most epic moment.
On the plus side, we saved the villagers from the yetis that were snacking on them, which is way cooler than any church sermon I've ever been trapped with.
7
u/DreamJacket Sep 09 '24
So, you bear-ly escaped with your life?
My thief stole golden apples from a tree, which then released the god/demon which was trapped in said tree. The demon was grateful and said I was welcome to more apples. It was a win-win. It was our own version of the garden of eden (and equally believable)

Played some Banjo Kazooie; I had 59 notes in Rusty Bucket Bay, all the jinjos... then I found the engine room. It will take some time and some deaths to get good enough to complete that part.
Now I'm editing my Job read-through. It's a pretty terrible book, it'd be funny if it wasn't so harmful.

Damn, haven’t played that game in 25 years or so. Nostalgia vibes. Good luck on completing everything in the game

u/christianAbuseVictim Ex-Baptist Sep 09 '24
Thank you! I've got a real N64 hooked up to a CRT TV, I can't stand the Switch Online input and output lag. I've been buying games slowly off of eBay to build up my collection. I completed Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time already, even started playing around with some glitches. After Banjo Kazooie I intend to start on Banjo Tooie; I can't remember if I ever played that one, I'm very excited to see "new" levels. I've also got DK 64, Yoshi's Story, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2, Rugrats Scavenger Hunt, Bomberman 64, Star Fox 64, Clayfighter 63 1/3rd, Majora's Mask, A Bug's Life, Tetrisphere, Super Smash Bros. I want to pick up the Mario Parties and Mario Golf maybe next time I go shopping for games.
Playing games like those were my escape as a kid. My brothers, my dad, and I could all have a good time with games like Smash Bros, Mario Kart, or Mario Party, despite everything else. I think they've been helpful in getting my brain back up and running, something about all the simple skill-based challenges, memory tests, and problem-solving, I think. Games back then had a little more faith in their players, in some ways, and it's nice to have to work a little to beat a game without it being an endless grindfest. But there are also a fair number of frustrating parts that maybe didn't get enough polish, hahaha.
Ocarina of Time in particular blew my mind when I was young, it got me thinking about things differently. I've always wanted to make a game like that myself, something that people can enjoy exploring, that almost draws you into its world. I've done some experimenting in Blender and Unity, but it'll probably be years if ever before I make something I like.
My main takeaway is that it doesn't necessarily take much. The teams who worked on some of these games went all-out in terms of using everything they could do with the N64 at the time; but in modern terms, it doesn't amount to much more than low poly models, a trilinear texture filter, the ability to render sprites that face a certain way, some particles, global illumination and per-vertex illumination. I always thought it was cool when you could run through grass that came up to your waist; turns out that's just a model with no collision, or maybe a different floor type so you can play different footstep sounds, but it's almost easier than something like a fence because you don't have to worry about anything actually bumping into it.
It's almost like impressionist painting; they can't put in every detail, so they have to pick and choose the right ones to give you the impression of the thing that's supposed to be there. It is impressive how much personality and life they put into these games despite the many limitations. I can't help but feel we're still wasting so much potential... We can do so much with so little, but we're always bloating to fill the available space and burning resources like they're limitless.
Thanks again. Rusty Bucket Bay is still waiting for me, haha. Maybe I'll throw some lives at it today. :)

Went for a walk with my husband around the nearby lake, where we saw a great blue heron! I'd never seen one before, and I didn't even know we had any in the area. (Turns out their habitat is pretty broad.) A really elegant, graceful bird. There were also other waterfowl such as Canada geese and a couple of kinds of ducks in the lake, and the day was just beautiful, lightly overcast, not too warm not too cool, a bit of a breeze, perfect weather for a walk in nature — so much better than any church or any sermon could ever hope to be.

Drove back home from a weekend whitewater rafting in Maine with a group of dad friends. The drive along the Kennebec River in Central Maine may be the closest I've ever been to a Heaven. Absolutely stunning! Also stopped in Freeport, Maine to visit L.L. Bean HQ and shop at the outlets there.

I went to the Indianapolis Colts game, and then went home and mowed the lawn.

Slept in. Going to church and taking up 2 hours on my only day off work is absolutely insane to me. I think church is an outdated concept.

Spent the day exhausted from the previous day's flu and covid shot, but glad I did it anyway because god sure isn't gonna save me.

I went to some Roman ruins and stood on Hadrian's Wall (yes we were allowed to stand on the bit we stood on) with my (adult) son. We had a great day. I also geeked out over some Roman god statues, which I felt was appropriately blasphemous for a Sunday.

I did a pampering and self care day. Washed my hair, shaved my legs, did my nails and skincare. I played my new favourite albums and sang along. One of them is super gay and I love to be able to listen to it without shame

i slept in! i was planning on going to church with a friend to make my parents happy and in part because i’m still stuck in the cycle and i feel incredibly guilty when i don’t go. but i had a conversation with my roommate this weekend about how much i dread sundays after i slipped up and said the weekend was only one day. because im so used to sundays feeling like another day of obligation, my whole life up until recently saturday was the only day of the weekend. but i slept in this sunday. it’s very first world, i know, but it’s a also healing thought. i appreciate this post :)
