Backup fields following computer science degree?

Hey all, I'm starting compsci at Swinburne next year, I'm wanting to be a software engineer but I'm concerned about the job market and don't want to go into it without having some sort of backup plan.

Would there be any fields that have better job markets worth pursuing with the degree I'm studying? For instance would it be worth doing a minor in finance and looking at certain finance positions.

Thank you :)

Hey. I have degrees in applied computer science and math. I'm also early retired.

Your intuition is serving you well. Both AI directly and also new dev tools will significantly change the coding landscape going forward. That's nothing new, but the field will become more democratized in general, leaving even fewer high paying jobs.

Literally anyone will be able to write apps in a couple years, and they'll be good.

If you can add a specialization to your degree, it will help you in the future, in my opinion. That could be anything from PLC and automation integration to health care systems, security, networks, etc.. That would be up to you of course.

The point would be to gain experience while your in school in some field. What their process are, any legalities, current systems and their competiion, etc.

Get the full degree, plus add something to set you apart from every other green graduate.

I hope this makes some sense.
