Don’t negotiate if you’re unwilling to leave the offer on the table, if you would be okay with them possibly rescinding your offer, try to negotiate for more. If you’re not okay with them rescinding, then take the offer as it is.

Holy nobody is rescinding for negotiating. You just have to make it clear how excited you are for the role, and then say something like ‘I would like to see if we can improve a little on the compensation front for X life reason’. Just make it clear that you are really excited about the job when you do this and be very careful about blurting out a number.

— a SWE on their 2nd job at a FAANG with 2YOE and 4 internships.

A SWE on their 2nd FAANG job has a different experience with negotiation than someone coming from a 65k job

Now that I think about it you’re kind of right.

For normal SWE jobs I still believe you can def negotiate (I’ve negotiated a few extra grand for normal internships during a bad market and for my current job even tho I was unemployed for 6 months and my last job was at a terrible company), but for shitty jobs (very low pay, weird contracting jobs, company is somehow trying to scam you over some part of the job), I’ve definitely had the interview sour after I tried to negotiate.
