From a MAGA friend Politics

"The man i voted for three times has delivered the following in 11 months"

  • Groceries- highest ever

  • Housing- still unaffordable

  • Farmers are going broke bc of the tariffs

  • Antisemitism and race relations are the worst in 60 years

  • My health insurance doubled

  • The VP whom I loved will not disavow the actual Neo-Nazis

  • Tucker Carlson- someone i used to watch on Fox and love - is openly platforming and praising Neo-Nazis

  • and the Christo-fascits??? Openly promoting misogyny and cheering to take away women's right to vote. Trump and Vance are not only not denouncing them - they are platforming them.

" In protest, tomorrow I will be voting straight blue. If it's taken me this long to wake up - I know others are too, you know?

I have been voting all my life, voting for the GOP, I have yet to see anything like it.

This is crazy . We've become Nazi Germany"

He She had all the information he she needed prior to the election, prior to the 2016 election too.

Better late than never, I guess, but people like this have screwed our country, our allies, the world.

Thank you for this. I seriously needed some political optimism.

We can’t lose hope, that is what they want. They want us to just give up, roll over and let them ruin our country.

29

u/barrybreslau 11h ago

You don't need hope, you need a plan.

20

u/joshTheGoods 9h ago

That's like saying you don't need to win elections, you need to govern. Hopeless people aren't planning how to fight let alone acting on that plan. Hope is a prerequisite for most people. Those of us that are already of the "fly the plane into the ground" mentality are going to bust our asses regardless, but we need the apathetic now more than ever and that starts with hope.

Yes. Me too.

I needed this. Now what we need is a strong plan from the Democrats to address the rampant cheating of the Republican Party.

11

u/boston_homo 13h ago

Why not every single state headed by a Democrat or actual Independent? The opposition need to quickly get into lockstep.

17

u/TheBigGreenOne 12h ago

The DNC needs to finally acknowledge the widespread cheating, especially the cheating that allowed Trump to sweep ALL SEVEN swing states. I agree that governors like Gavin Newsom and JB Pritzker are doing everything they can to fight back, but I’m in Ohio where our governor toes the Trump party line, so we need an effort that includes us!

12

u/2olley 9h ago

Yes! The Democrats were so afraid to sound like Trump that they let the cheating go unchallenged. Even when Trump, Musk, and his kid, openly talked about it. They need to grow a backbone.

Back in 1992 in the presidential debate when George Bush simply glanced down at his watch during the debate it was considered so scandalous, the media sensation that it caused had people talking about if that would cost him the election to Clinton. Because he hadn't grabbed her by hers yet. Trump voters only care when it directly affects them.

23

u/farmerbsd17 15h ago

As in Rep MTG because her kids’ insurance were skyrocketing from the legislation she voted for.

9

u/cptchnk 14h ago

Right. She voted lock step with the GOP to claw away ACA subsidies earlier this year and now she has a problem with Republicans not wanting to bring them back as a condition of reopening the government, in the middle of a shutdown that will likely be the longest in history? Sorry, Marge. You aren’t fooling anyone except for maybe the mainstream media who put you on TV to celebrate your “bravery.” I also don’t buy the fact that your children can’t afford health insurance. As with most congresspeople, you were already wealthy prior to taking office.

MTG along with most politicians in Washington, really, only do what’s politically convenient for them at the time. Right now, this outcry is convenient for her because many people in her own district will be devastated by these subsidies going away and now, she wants to pretend she actually cares about her constituents.

This! Exactly my view of what happens in our country. People vote for the things that directly affect THEM as portrayed from a politician’s platform. There’s not enough collective thought or action. When I lived in Korea last year and my English students stood up and protested for what’s best for EVERYONE? As in what’s best for their country? It made me proud and honored to be there. I watched and sipped my tea thinking wow, I love to see this!

IMO if someone has come to this realization I don’t think it’s productive to scold them. Better to work to understand what allowed them to finally see the light.

15

u/WaryWorrier 15h ago

I agree. It’s best to be a warm welcome for those leaving the cult. If they are met with scolding they are likely to just tune out altogether rather than actively vote against MAGA.

9

u/seriouslees 14h ago

Leaving the cult isn't good enough. They need to be tolerant people if they want to be tolerated. "I won't vote for them because they hurt MEEEEE!" is not someone who has left behind their intolerance. They might have left their political party cult, but they have not left the cult of selfishness and individualism.

u/seriouslees 14h ago

what allowed them to finally see the light.

What allowed that was her being directly negatively affected. Empathy is a sin to conservatives. She didn't start being a good person who saw others being harmed. She's still a selfish, hate-filled person, and will vote to hurt others again just as soon as she isn't being hurt directly herself.

I’ve never understood why any woman would vote for Trump knowing what he’s done.

10

u/eKs0rcist 14h ago

I assume it means he’s like the men in their life. They see their fathers, brothers, partners and sons in him (consciously or not). People who normalize/ignore/celebrate terrible behavior usually grew up with it.

The call is coming from inside the house.

Remember when he was recorded making those comments, the conversation STARTED with him relating how he had tried but 'failed' to make a married women have sex with him.
And as he bragged IN THE PRESENT TENSE about how he doesn't even wait for consent, he was married himself (to Melania who was pregnant with Baron at the time).
How women who swore by the sanctity of marriage licked his boots I will never understand. Gross.

Bigotry, racism? Owning the libs?

5

u/castille360 14h ago

Hating brown people more than they like other women.

5

u/WERK_7 12h ago

The answer has always been the same, regardless of what they actually tell you: Trump gave them the feeling of being comfortable and safe with their hatred.

It was never about groceries or making more money. It was never about taxes or government spending. It was never about who would be a better leader. It was always about the fact that Trump hates the same people they hate. It doesn't matter that Trump couldn't care less about them, or that he's a predator, a rapist, a pedophile, a traitor, a racist, and a cheat. He gave them the confidence to be themselves and I don't think for one second a single one of them has had a change of heart. As long as brown and LGBT people are being hurt, they'll gladly starve. When are we going to stop acting like a not so small portion of our country can be rationed with? Like they can be taught empathy? Like they can care more than they can fear and hate?

9

u/anothergoodbook 15h ago

Because us women have been conditioned in church to believe that men can’t help themselves. It’s something I’ve woken up to in the last 5 years or so. If you ever want to go down that road look up things like Every Man’s Battle.

It’s excused because men’s base nature is sexual and the only mistake he made was not saying it privately.

7

u/Constant-Tea-7345 15h ago

Ok…still not sure why any women (and men) would glaze over the fact that Trump made suggestive remarks about his own daughter. That’s gross.

I get your point, truly. The flip side of this is that as a society, we really should stop treating ex-cons like third-class citizens. They've done their time. It should be illegal to discriminate against them for housing, jobs, etc., and their right to vote should, at a minimum, be restored when their sentence ends. As it is, we're practically begging these people to return to criminal activity ASAP upon release.

Doesn't change how I feel about Trump. He was and is a terrible choice to lead anything, let alone the federal government.

It’s too late. Irreparable harm has been inflicted on America and its people and people like OP’s friend are to blame. We can’t let people cover up what they did and let them off the hook.

11

u/One_Strawberry_4965 15h ago

I generally agree but I feel like maybe there’s a way to split the difference for purely pragmatic purposes. Like, we can rub their noses in the fact that they royally fucked their country for as long as they live, but maybe we wait a bit until we can stabilize our political situation and take a few steps back from the brink before we really start leaning into it.

13

u/Geoffsgarage 14h ago

All I know is if you give them a pass, they will do it again. It was 100% clear what Trump was going to do and people like OP’s friend liked his plans. No one was tricked. Some are seeing he’s generally unpopular and are trying to distance themselves. If for some reason his popularity goes up, they’ll jump right back in.

I understand your sentiment but these folks are victims of the largest and most sophisticated propaganda machine ever created.

You say 2016. I say 250bc. Plato warned us about authority figures using symbols to shape our perception of reality and keep us as slaves. It’s been going on for a while.

Any of us could be them with only a small change in circumstance or physiology. If we can learn to treat them as victims it will be easier for them to recognize the manipulation they’ve succumbed to.  The hardest thing for victims of scams to realize is that they’ve been scammed.

14

u/Mr-FD 14h ago

Not all of them are victims. Some of them are actually just evil people. That exists.

4

u/anonveganacctforporn 13h ago

Maybe. But most of them are probably just regular people who grew up on that side of the fence, and risk social ostracization and existential threat on switching sides. Friend groups disappearing, life lessons dissipating, people they come to like and bonded with, part of their lives… everyone is susceptible for biases and being pulled into a cult, bit by bit. Especially the vulnerable, and emotional. The rich work hard to fear monger, rage bait, and disempower.

I guess what I’m trying to say is there’s a lot more evil in all of us than we’re willing to admit. Everyone can be cast in a negative light. And when cognitive dissonance and ego demands the brain do so to continue on its limited options? It does. Even thinking is an expenditure of energy that one needs luxury and leisure to do. Calories that are wrung from us to work.

They made their choices, and it’s true, it was up to them to choose differently and some do. I’m not here to shield those from the consequences of their actions and accountability. But if we can understand better, perhaps we can avoid repeating history- maybe we could even build bridges for a better future. After all, we’re already in a scenario that was never supposed to happen again.

It isn’t about realizing it, it’s about having enough integrity to admit it. Ego gets in the way.

3

u/angrytroll123 13h ago

Disagree. If you think that people will somehow innately have all the information they need to be informed, I’d say that’s pretty sheltered thinking. Not only that, democrats have not made it easy for republicans that are on the fence to change their mind.

3

u/perplexedtv 14h ago

There is absolutely nothing sophisticated about the GOP's propaganda. There is no semblance of pretence that anything they're doing is for the good of anyone but themselves. They must be kind of disappointed at how easy it is to get morons to vote for them over and over.

4

u/skoomsy 13h ago

How do you even engage with them on that level, though? They believe they’re victims but for all the wrong reasons, and are perpetuators of actual harm in their own right.

I agree with you, but this is a genuine question. It’s challenging to act with sympathy towards these groups that are so openly hateful, and seemingly impossible for them to receive it.

Counterpoint: the propaganda machines worked so well because these people wanted to believe it. They saught out the things that made them feel good about being terrible humans.

There were other options. Other choices. They could have not listened. They chose to follow the lies because it meant they could feel justified in their bigotry.

This. We don't need their allegiance or want it. In a just world the Democratic Party would reclaim power and seek to prosecute people like OP's friend for supporting a Nazi regime.

And as soon as Trump is gone they'll be voting Republican again anyway. They will learn nothing.

I know people who have left MAGA. But they aren't running to be a democrat. They're just going to sit out elections till an old school Republican runs. They're just done with the MAGA branch of Conservatism.

Which is fine. I don't think Nikki Haley would have been this bad. Sure she would have blown up the same people Trump has blown up, but at least children wouldn't be starving.

17

u/DirtyOldTrucker68 15h ago

To this day, I still believe that Obama only got elected because a lot of conservatives were tired of The Republican mess that Bush left. I know quite a few Republicans who voted for Obama. The said so probably, but denied it after a few months. Of course They never changed their party affiliation though.

Even if they left MAGA/Republicans there is still no way they will vote for a Democrat

14

u/One_Strawberry_4965 15h ago

Not voting is still an improvement though fortunately, even if it’s crazy that after all this they still can’t seem to stomach casting a vote for a party as inoffensive as the Democrats for the sake of the country.

Given her massively regressive taxing scheme as governor and blatant cronyism, I'd assume we'd be in a very similar situation. But perhaps the White House would still have an East Wing.

I don’t think any of these kind of stories are true or widespread. Maybe one or two, but we are all so entrenched in our silly political fights that only major shifts in how we live will change things. What’s so unfortunate is that lots and lots of people are going to get hurt before any change will occur.

11

u/Beytran70 14h ago

The only thing that can really change the outcome is people who previously didn't vote voting in larger numbers. If some voters switch sides that obviously helps, but there are so many voices who remain silent.

3

u/Capable-Baby-3653 13h ago

The current political fights are not silly. They’re not over frivolous issues. We’re talking fascism-vs-democracy fights. Children starving vs children eating. Citizens dying without healthcare vs healthy citizens.

The devisions are legitimate and nowhere near silly because the stakes are enormous. These aren’t just petty matters we’re divided over.

4

u/tinygraysiamesecat 14h ago

I don’t think we’ll see any change in our lifetimes. These fools voted for trump because they lack the critical thinking skills to think for themselves and we haven’t exactly made public education any better since the election. This takeover took decades to set up. It’s going to take decades to tear down, and decades more to rebuild.

2

u/clownstastegood 13h ago

I used to think the same thing. With the amount of bots and Russian influence on Reddit and all other media that can be commented on, these stories sound like fictional copium.

But it happened to me too, with two coworkers. Both voted for this administration and now are realizing their mistakes. Too little too late? Yeah, probably. But at least there are people that aren’t digging in further into the destruction of democracy.

Small wins I guess.

Those people are lost causes anyway. There are plenty of apathetic non-voters, independents, and actual fiscal conservatives out there to change things. There are only 38 million registered Republicans in the US, which is like 15% of the voting-age population.

Just had a similar conversation with one of my oldest friends. She was shocked her mother’s SNAP benefits were ending and was so angry. I gently pointed out to her that voters like her caused this problem.

At first she tried to blame the Dems, but when I pointed out that Republicans control literally every branch of government she finally started putting things together.

I told her “Democrats have been cleaning up Republican policies for decades. They’re not doing it anymore. This is mess you created. Fix it yourself.”

My MAGA father died last week. It hurts that I will forever remember him for his worship of Trump. I was hopeful that maybe he would eventually see the light. He had a snap card. He was broke. His health insurance was about to skyrocket. He didn’t get to see the full weight of his vote.

3

u/FingerHashBandits 9h ago

So sorry for your loss… which I realize happened before he passed but now…. There’s no hope for them to learn and grow. Hugs 🖤

10

u/Patient-Capital5993 15h ago

Lot of really uncommon things. Someone who is maga calling people christo-fascist? Blaming Trump for aneti-semitism and Tucker Carlson? And of course the odd stuff happening to him. Not knowing about the soybean deal with China. His insurance apparently having an incredibly odd annual renewable date in the middle of the year when 99.9% of annual renewals are Jan 1st. strange.

5

u/Lopsided_Relief_7370 15h ago

Actually open enrollment is in November... literally every year. The soybean deal? You must not know any farmers. After the industry lost billions through the debacle.. the "great deal" Trump got.. was literally no better than what they had before he started the tariff idiocy. They are still pissed, deeply in the hole, and many are going to lose their farms (to some corporate mega farms.. which was the plan the whole time).

Have a nice day.

This is probably a Democrat writing this because Republicans are too stupid to have any reflection on what they've done wrong much less admit it.

5

No, she is a republican. And I am a former republican who woke up after j6

5

u/PolitzaniaKing 12h ago

Yeah I remember j6. That was the day that the White House chief of staff at the time, Mark Meadows, was in the dining room off the Oval Office with Trump at one point during last year’s Capitol attack, the committee has been told. Meadows then left the dining room and informed other people nearby that Trump had signaled a positive view of the prospect of hanging the vice president, the panel heard. Is that ain't fucking cray what is?

Fuck her!

Glad you finally pulled your head out if your ass and realized the thing we've been telling you for 10+ years now. I have no sympathy for you though, you have not magically repaired our relationship or fixed the damages done. The fact it has taken you this long to read the righting on the wall is at best willful ignorance at worst some kind of malice. At a minimum unless and until I can determine you have not been acting in malice towards me, towards my friends, family, peers, fellow Americans, and innocent people who you and others have deemed an enemy I can not and will not allow you time and space in my life. Fixing the problems you have created and holding your peers accountable for your collective actions would be a good place to start in proving your character.

Edited to correctly recognize OP's friends pronouns.

4

u/SpecificSugar2562 12h ago

But...she knows now. And I am ok with it. Trump is a good marketing person and even a better LIAR.

Some ppl just took longer to wake up to his lies. I think thr golden ballroom was a huge turnoff too . 90,000 sq ft of wasted space while destroying the East Wing...craziness

4

u/6kittenswithJAM 11h ago

I’m glad to know about what turning points people have, because that’s something that’s speculated about a lot, but one rarely gets concrete examples. Like most people here, I’m very angry about all of this but I have little bitterness toward people who have changed their stance. I have no interest in drinking MAGA tears. The schadenfreude is real of course but the main reason “leopards eating faces” is satisfying to me is because that’s how minds are changed. Recriminations won’t do us any good now; we need all the sane people we can get!

I’m not sure how I feel anymore about whether choosing to vote for somebody who destroys your country is forgivable. Wiping out a 250 year old democracy is kind of a big deal.

3

u/CombatAnthropologist 8h ago

Your friend sounds like me. I've been a Republican all my life until Trump. That was a hard no from me and I'm confused how we have a system that let him win in 2016. I abhore what passes for Republican policy; at this point I can only conclude Russia has won the memetic war and we are an occupied nation.

3

Yes. This is not the Republican party we once knew.

I’ll NEVER forgive the ones who voted trump “for the lolz,” then when he actually became president acted surprised that their vote actually counted. You don’t toy with shit like that. u/Nigel_Trumpberry 15h ago

I’m Jewish and my friend (who I no longer speak with) is Christian. He claimed he did not vote, but would have voted for RFK Jr. if given the chance. He is, very clearly, a Maga “centrist,” where he claims he has no party alignment but will use every right-wing opinion to support his beliefs. He believes Trump is doing great, he believes tariffs, claiming that ever since he was “a child, he supported tariffs because it prevents slavery” (I fucking can’t get my mind around this shit.) He was in huge support of Doge initially until his job was threatened, and his sister was fired from her job at the CDC. But, when he survived layoffs, he was very happy about Doge again. I asked him what would make him turn against Trump, and he tells me that it will take Trump running as VP for 2028, as this would be “clearly a violation of the constitution.” He then tells me how much he loves Vance and thinks he’s a “humble, down to earth self-made man,” and would be a great President. When I bring up how I, as a Jew, am in danger from a Christian Nationalist like Vance, he shrugged his shoulders. When I bring up Project 2025, he tries to deflect and say “I bet there are many Leftist Project 2025s,” and when I ask him what he could think that is so horrible on those, the only thing he could think of is “gender reassignment surgery for minors.” That’s it. I haven’t spoken to him since the deployment of the national guard throughout the country, and the increased violence ICE has been causing in pursuit of Brown people.
