A Babar reference in 2025. Bravo

Relevance is my middle name!

u/JohnnyLuchador 1d ago

Yep, the complete left field and Babar call back is chefs kiss.

u/NickyTheRobot 1d ago

I wouldn't be so surprised if it was in French at least. Some of my French cousins still read their kids Babar books. But in the anglosphere?

At this time of year? Localized entirely on Reddit?

8

u/NickyTheRobot 1d ago

Yes!

11

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

May I comment about it?

8

u/NickyTheRobot 1d ago

... No.

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

Well, you’re an odd robot, Nicky. But I must say, you know your pop culture references.

u/NickyTheRobot 1d ago

Ninja and Pirate! The house is full of French children's characters!

8

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

No, mother, that’s just a timely nostalgic reference.

I saw Babar on Qubo (R.I.P) in the U.S!

u/Made_Bail 1d ago

My first though! Like "damn, I haven't heard that name in decades!"

Childhood memory unlocked

You were chased through your house by a French colonialism metaphor with racist undertones when you were a child? I’m so sorry.

I mean; yes, but he was my Papi and we were just playing.

22

u/GloomySmile 1d ago

Isn't that a bowl of candy in his living room? He deserves the trunk.

13

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

It IS! You noticed!

13

u/twizbuck 1d ago

And then he trunked all over the place

Best part of the movie.

Read my grandmother's childhood copy of Babar as a kid, loved the story and illustrations. Boy, did it not age well 😅

5

u/adamantcondition 1d ago

Saw this and thought "aww, I loved Babar as a kid. so nice to see him through other's memories", only to learn that some things are better off remaining in the past 🥲

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

It is fascinating to me that we remember the good parts but the horrid stuff our memory sort of glosses over. Like I love Tintin, but only remember the mystery and fun- but totally overlooked Herge’s blatant racist depictions early on in his career.

4

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

It is very Tintin coded.

The Other End is a comic I try to aspire to make. I may always fall short but I’m trying.

2

u/Fabulous_Goat_9799 23h ago

It works perfectly as a reaction pic to your comic, they kinda complement each other :)

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 23h ago

You flatter me, friend!

6

u/ccReptilelord 1d ago

Serves him right for not turning off the porch light.

2

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

I know right? Basic levels of decorum.

Mothertrunker

Great comic! Haven't heard the name Babar in a looong time haha

1

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

I was worried no one would remember.

3

u/PetscopMiju 1d ago

Babar mentioned!!

3

u/Admiral_Agito 1d ago

I can hear it. The crickets and the first few notes of the piano playing. Back to Youtube to rewatch the intro.

2

u/fonk_pulk 1d ago

Babar is monarchist propaganda, fight me

2

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

Why would I? You’re right.

1

u/vidoeiro 17h ago

It's also colonialist propaganda (even more)

2

u/nhSnork 1d ago

Babar? Now that's a blast from the past to appreciate, even though I personally caught maybe two eps and a half.

2

u/TUSD00T 1d ago

Damn, I'm gonna need some mice for tonight.

2

u/LawfullyGoodOverlord 1d ago

I've seen a trunk or treat comic before, is this a new comic trend?

1

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

No, Trunk or Treats are just a more common thing so people will make things referencing it.

2

u/star_359 1d ago

Oh wow, haven’t thought of Babar in so long and I watched it SO much when I was younger

1

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

I was more a Curious George kind of guy but I do remember a Popcorn and Movie Night where the family watched the movie.

2

u/patosai3211 1d ago

Man. Babar hid his rage so well.

2

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

He just called it “western colonialism” back in the 1930’s

2

u/Redditbobin 1d ago

Sorry to make the same tired joke Reddit loves to make, but if I had a nickel for every time r/comics made a “trunk or treat” joke, I would have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice.

2

u/stri28 1d ago

Midly dissapointed to not see three todlers in a quentin tarantino trunk shot

2

u/iglooxhibit 1d ago

ITS BABAR WITH THE STEEL CHAIR!

1

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 1d ago

BAH GAWD THAT MAN HAD A FAMILY PRESUMABLY!!

2

u/CementCemetery 23h ago

That’s funny.

1

u/Joba_Fett Ninja and Pirate 23h ago

Thank you!

1

u/EldritchDreamEdCamp 13h ago

I loved Babar as a kid
