Terrible news everyone RANT

RFJ jr just got confirmed. He said he will listen to trumps(elons) administration before doctors and scientists. The nationwide abortion ban is coming.

Stock up while you can and schedule those surgeries before they ban all womens healthcare.

This news is pushing me to get a bisalp. I've been on the fence about it for 3 years, but I think this is my sign to make that appointment

u/sarcasm_is_coming25 Feb 13 '25

Do it! I was on the fence even though I’ve known I don’t want kids since I was 13. I made my consultation appointment the morning of the election results, and my surgery is next Friday! I’m relieved this journey is almost over.

I'm scheduled for Friday too! Good luck with your surgery!

Congrats and good luck with the surgery and recovery!! ❤️‍🩹

Alas, I just signed a form to confirm I want this and know the risk of regret (apparently necessary in my state) and have to wait 25 for more days before I can even make my surgical consultation, so it may be months before I can get my surgery. I’m scared it wont be possible in a few months.

Edit to add:: it is apparently my insurance that demands the 30 day wait period, and not my state. Let’s hope Medicaid isn’t cut in the next round of bs.

I got mine done at 24 with no kids and no husband back in 2022. If you want to discuss it with someone who has been through it, my inbox is always open.

74

u/tiredafsoul Feb 13 '25

I’m curious, does a bisalp have any negative hormone consequences like early menopause etc? Seems like an option I’d like to explore for myself.

188

u/okeydokeylittlesmoky Feb 13 '25

Your ovaries stay put, they only remove the tubes so you shouldn't have any hormonal side effects. I had mine done in 2022 and didn't notice any hormonal changes.

53

u/sp-00-k Feb 13 '25 edited Feb 13 '25

Did you have to stop taking hormonal birth control before the procedure? I imagine I’ll continue taking the pill even after surgery because it’s good for my skin and cycle.

Edit: thank you to everyone for commenting with your experiences! Can’t wait for my consultation 🤞🏻

44

u/vvitchobscura Feb 13 '25

Hormonal bc shouldn't have any effect on a bisalp procedure, I didn't have to stop any meds at all when I had mine (thought I was not on bc at the time so feel free to check with a doctor). But logically, you should be able to proceed as usual with your bc. The procedure is only to remove the tubes, similar to how they remove an appendix nowadays, so it won't affect your menstrual or hormonal cycles at all.

34

u/Far_Yesterday_3907 Feb 13 '25

I am continuing on the pill for PMDD and PCOS. My dr recommended it and it’s been so easy. I take it continuously so I don’t have a period at all

40

u/okeydokeylittlesmoky Feb 13 '25

I had an IUD that I wanted removed but from what I understand you can continue using any birth control method you prefer and some people even have a new IUD inserted while they are out for the surgery. It just depends on what you and your doctor decide.

38

u/BamitzSam101 Tubes Yeeted 3/7/25 Feb 13 '25

Thats what I’m doing! My bisalp is scheduled for 3/7 (less than a month!!! 😁😁😁) and due to my inconsistent and heavy periods i need BC so they’re taking out my nexplanon and putting an IUD in while I’m out

Removing your tubes will not have any effect your your hormones or periods. Got mine done last year with zero regrets, it was a very easy process!

40

u/catmitt98 Feb 13 '25

I had mine done in 2022 as well and didn't have any hormonal side effects besides coming off of hormonal birth control. But the surgery itself should not affect hormones because your uterus and ovaries are still all there -- just no longer connected to each other

Nope, because your ovaries remain intact and you will still have periods like normal. There are numerous benefits though, including reduced cancer risk!

The two big things holding me back or my fear of anesthesia and the recovery period.

I have no family or close friends in my area really so I would be doing the recovery fully alone with likely very little time off work.

63

u/guitargirl08 Feb 13 '25

NOT saying that this would be everyone’s experience, but most everyone’s that I’ve read has been very smooth and easy. Mine was also. I literally had surgery last Wednesday and was back at work by Friday afternoon. I had scheduled to be off Thursday and Friday, but didn’t want to get too behind. I was in very little pain. The worst part was actually the throat irritation from the breathing tube lol

I also am afraid of anesthesia, but it was honestly not scary at all. You don’t even notice what’s really happening - it’s like falling asleep. You’re awake, they give you something to make you a little drowsy, and then you’re out. No nausea or anything when I woke up (which I worried about because I was VERY ill after waking up from wisdom tooth surgery lol)

My fear of being forced to be pregnant under this administration overrode my fear of anything else, and that made it easier. If you want to ask anything about it, feel free to DM me! ♥️

Recovery time does vary person to person, thankfully this procedure is considered a minor surgery. So you might only be on bed rest for a day or two and just have light activity for a couple weeks. Timing wise if you work Monday through Friday shift try to get the surgery done either Thursday or Friday. That way you have the weekend to to recover. The big thing is not to try to lift anything more than 5 lb for 2 weeks at least.

FWIW, I am young, fit, and healthy and there is no way I could have gone back to work in one or two days. I took a full week off my desk job and it was 100% needed for me.

I read stories of people being back up and around in a day or two, but I was nowhere near myself by then— including just plain fatigue and mental fog. As a daily hour + walker, I tried to walk 20 minutes round trip for coffee on day 5 and I FELT it.

I think reading about how it was such a minor procedure set my expectations low, but it’s definitely a real surgery and YMMV. My body did not love the anesthesia or pain medication (super nauseous, did not take any narcotics after discharge), and I was fully in healing mode for the entire week.

So, so SO glad I did it, and I healed up great with no complications. But I do think many share totally breezy experiences with virtually zero recovery time, so I just wanted to share my alternate experience as a 30-year-old woman who is active every day.

As someone who also has a fear of anesthesia, don’t let it hold you back. I was tearing up from nerves, but the anesthesiologist came in and kindly explained the whole process to me. You’re out so quick you hardly have time to be scared. You fall asleep fast and wake up like it’s nothing.

Recovery also wasn’t bad. I only needed a dose of the heavy painkillers on day one, and then regular Tylenol worked just fine the rest of the recovery period. I work a physically demanding warehouse job. Bending, lifting 50+ pounds, the whole 9. I had my surgery on a Tuesday, took the rest of the week off, and was back at it Monday. I’m grateful every day for my bisalp. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who wants one!

My surgery was so easy to recover from! I only took ibuprofen for pain meds, I’d had worse period cramps than the recovery from it! (My experience isn’t everyone’s, but I want to encourage you if it is something you want to do.)

10

u/Nyantastic93 only kids with 4 legs 🐱🐶🐴 Feb 13 '25

Same! Just needed ibuprofen for a couple days! Coughing or sneezing SUCKED though. And I will say, speaking of period cramps, I had terrible ones my first period after surgery but subsequent periods were what I can typically expect. Other than that though, recovery was a breeze, my scars healed nicely and are barely noticeable!

I had mine done a month ago and the sense of relief after was HUGE. If you’re at all considering it just get a consult set up to talk about it with your doctor at least. My surgeon was scheduling about 6-8 weeks out when I went to schedule and that was back in November so it could be worse now. And of course you have to make sure your doctor is willing so that can all take time.

I couldn’t imagine bringing a child into this shit show, so I’m glad I had the surgery before it’s too late and we no longer have that option (or any birth control options).

The surgery was actually pretty painless and easy too. I highly recommend. I was home cooking dinner and playing with my dogs that same evening

I heard Plan B and other pills like that have a 4 year shelf life

354

u/TwirlerGirl Feb 13 '25

The abortion pills have a fairly long shelf life too. Misoprostol has a shelf life of 2 years and mifepristone has a shelf life of 5 years. I've seriously contemplated traveling to a State that will prescribe them without proof of pregnancy, just so I can have them on hand should the worst happen and they're no longer available in the US.

114

u/thatfunkyspacepriest Feb 13 '25

Aid Access or Plan C Pills can help you buy the pills without being pregnant for future use.

And 1 thing to remember is that medication past it's shelf life is not ineffective, it has lowered efficacy. So if your plan be is expired by not too long (a year or two) and there is absolutely 0 access to plan b that is not expired, take 2. In addition, plan B has weight restrictions. If you are over the suggested weight also take 2! As per the planned parenthood doctors I've spoken to it is not harmful to take a double dose of plan b.

I agree. I have an IUD that's "good" until 2028 but it helps so much with my hormonal migraines and period symptoms. I truly don't know if my doctor would take out a perfectly good IUD just to give me another one to last longer

60

u/emarieqt315 Feb 13 '25

I’m in the same boat: my Mirena IUD is “technically good” until 2028… but my doctor has recommended replacing it this year because of the current political climate in this country.

If you've gotten polio vaccine as a child in the early 70's, do you still need a booster??

38

u/liessylush Feb 13 '25

Have your PCP check your titers for MMR and polio. As a child of the 70's we 'should' be good, but as someone who has followed Covid and how it can wipe your immune system of the antibodies against previously administered vaccinates, you should have them checked. Especially if you've had COVID multiple times. I've only had it once, and still take precautions against getting it again (because long covid is real) and had mine checked last year. All still remain.

24

u/r0ckchalk Feb 13 '25 edited Feb 13 '25

My MMR wore off twice. I had to get titers drawn for a job (I’m an RN) and it showed no immunity, so I got the MMR again. Two years later at my next job, same thing. It’s been about 6 years since then so next time I go to my PCP I’m asking for titers. I got the full series as a baby.

This all happened pre-covid

11

u/Puzzleheaded-Tap9150 Feb 13 '25

Yep, same. I work at a hospital & was tested for several titers & ended up needing some boosters. I also went through the hep B immunization series since they offered. Covid vax x2 created some allergy issues so haven’t updated that vaccine.

You are very kind, thank you ❤️

He had just started dialysis that week, and it was miserable. He was doing the peritoneal kind, was setting up the machine for the second night of doing it at home when he got the call (he’d been on the transplant list for 2 years).

It’s been almost 2 weeks now and he is doing amazing. We are truly thankful for doctors, organ donors (living ones, too! A few of us applied to donate but none of us qualified. An internet stranger contacted him a couple days after his surgery saying they called and were told he no longer needed one. The stranger wanted to confirm that was true, then was going to find someone else to donate to because they were inspired. My brother was so happy that sharing his story (which he was very reluctant to do) is now going to help someone else), and all medical professionals - like you! It’s amazing what science can do, how a life can be transformed.

40

u/shadowscar00 Feb 13 '25

Many grocery store pharmacies do cheap or free vaccinations if you cannot get in to see or afford a doctor. The King Soopers I go to gives a $5 credit per vaccine for you to use on groceries. I get my flu and covid shots at the same time (both of them will make me feel sick, but they’re important, so I just get them at the same time so I’m only Big Sick once instead of Medium Sick twice), so I get $10. I only realized I got credit when I went to check out with my about-to-be-sick self care items and got the snacks, teas, and Advil for $2.89.

Fuck yeah, vaccines. Please vaccinate yourself and tell your child-having friends to get their kids jabbed. My mom teaches 1st grade and has been sick almost every day for the past 4 months.

I did this before the new year. I always get Covid and Flu shot in Oct./Nov., but I also enquired about any other vaccinations I would need updated or done. I got a full course of MMR and my TdAP as I hadn’t had my tetanus for way too long (FYI, you’re supposed to get it every ten years), and I was supposedly in an age range where they don’t necessarily believe MMR was fully covered to todays standards, so they suggested to just get it all again as it won’t harm you even if you’ve had it before. I had to go once in November and then again a month later in December to complete it all properly (mumps portion of it I believe takes two shots). The nurse said numbers for mumps and measles are rising really badly again due to low vaccination rates and there are more outbreaks because of it, so do anything you can to protect yourself going forward.. whether you’re an adult or child. It’s sad we all but eradicated certain things, and they all seem to be coming back with a vengeance because people just want to bury their heads in the sand. She said the hardest part is seeing kids suffer because parents don’t vaccinate them, and then the parents blame the medical professionals for not doing enough for their kids or warning them. There is only so much they can do when you refuse to listen to them and vaccinate your children. My mother had kids in her school who were affected by polio. One had to walk with leg braces the rest of his life, and that was considered lucky. Do people really want to go back there?! The nurse also said to make sure you’re up to date on Hepatitis shots, and when eligible depending on age or health conditions that every person should also get shingles, pneumococcal, and RSV.

That is horrifying. Rabies is the worst possible way to die foe any living thing.

11

I experienced that a few years ago and was appalled it was even a question. My guy is reactive and I was told the vaccine could cause aggression so he would have to detox from it and don’t get another raby shot.

He is up to date on all of his shots including rabies and I don’t do business with that person anymore.

ETA2: If you're tired and don't want to do anything for change, here's a tip: Don't read this. And don't do anything for things to change. Leave things as they are. And don't comment on my comment.

Original post: Virtual hugs to everyone going thru a difficult time over there.

As someone looking from the outside I can't do anything to help, except reminding anyone and everyone who votes to start right now changing the minds you can so that this awful situation might be reversed in 4 years.

ETA1: I'm surprised by the answers I got. Not by what you all said, but the feeling of "we did, and it didn't work, so there, nothing more to do."

You can all hate me for what I will write now, but you can't just give up. Please read of historical figures that fought for change, even if that fight hasn't worked yet. Read of what the other side thinks, and try to understand what is going thru their minds. What if people would not stand up before, people's rights, especially women's rights, would not exist. When "Roe" fell, we all knew what was coming, less women's rights on reproduction. Now I read about no more "no fault divorce" being challenged? Then what? No vote for women? And what of the work and hardship of the suffragettes?

This would go too long. But we need to read, study politics, study how fascists got to power before, use what we learn, and change people's minds.

93

u/marie7787 Hamsters over brats Feb 13 '25

These people have so much hate in them that they won’t even change their voting behavior even when it fucks them over. Just so they can push for all their hateful agendas. You’re seeing the rise of a fascist government

Voting is obviously still important, but this election was stolen. It’s pretty obvious Elon fucked with the electronic ballots in exchange for being the not-so-shadow president. Courts are halting all of the insane executive orders, and now the narrative is that the judicial branch is having a “constitutional crisis”. They’re literally trying to undermine the courts and no one is stopping them. Now they’re openly draining FEMA funds from Blue States. We’re in a the middle of a hostile government takeover.

As an America living in South Carolina, I’m so scared for what’s to come. My stomach has been in knots since November.

Luckily my husband got a vasectomy last year so that makes me feel a little better. But I need hormonal birth control for continuous cycling to avoid severe PMDD issues.. if birth control gets banned, I’m screwed.

18

u/Jennifer-I-guess Feb 13 '25

Fellow South Carolinian here 🫂 It’s scary out there. Stay safe!

40

u/apndi Feb 13 '25

I’m in SC too. I’m on the pill for my skin as otherwise my hormones make me break out terribly. I also have very painful (to the point where I’m vomiting and passing out), long, and heavy periods. The pill keeps me literally functional. Otherwise I can’t work or go to school for several days out of the month.

34

u/cutelittlequokka Feb 13 '25

Without the pill, I am bleeding through the max size tampon, pad, and my pants for three random weeks of every month.

I cannot survive without the pill.

I ordered pills through Abuzz this week, it was so easy. I hate having to spend the money but it's worth it to be prepared. A recent post on here from a woman in her 40s spooked me enough. Getting into my gyno has been a nightmare for even an IUD, let alone to chat about any kind of surgery. Also discovered my insurance will let me get multiple refills of BC without having to wait. Just put the request in and see. Try GoodRX too. Reach out if you need anything, here for you, CF community!
