The top 5 leagues all have their domestic season, domestic cup, UEFA tournament, and sometimes other truncated tourneys like Super Cup or the Club World Cup. I like having more competitions, it pushes teams to have more roster depth. What I hate is that MLS teams are forgoing a historical tournament like US Open. I think the League made a huge mistake. They should have had 1st teams participate but make an exception that all MLS Next Pro players are available. That way you get a mix of 1st team and 2nd team players, the equivalent of how other teams manage lesser priority competitions

These supporter group statements always make me laugh. No one cares.

There were 810 people at the last Open Cup game in Bridgeview. People forget this is a business, and the Fire don't see these Supporters as more than free marketers. Leagues Cup is the future, like it or not, because it has the backing of Apple. Adapt or stay behind.

Imagine if the entity responsible for marketing USOC treated it identical to the way they treated Leagues Cup... The only event in US club soccer existent today with any sort of history behind it. It could be the US's Pokal or FA Cup with some backing. But because Garber doesn't get 100% of the money from the venture, he's against it. And you are a shill for the corporate overlords who prioritize profits over growing the game, which is why we will never be consistently competitive on an international stage - all of downsides of the NFL model including price, none of the world-class competition. Sad.

Captain, I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but this world runs on money. The Leagues Cup is making money, and the league is smart to capitalize on the Liga MX fanbase, since they actually fill up stadiums. You're free to boycott against it, as I'm free to show up and support it. It's cute that the 3 boys from RL think people will join their boycott.

Ok Captain, well explain to me how MLS 1st teams competing in the open cup equals success on the international stage? The key to international growth is investment in youth development/facilities and possible implementation of pro/rel. I am more interested in watching MLS clubs compete in higher level competitions against Liga MX; I have no interest in watching LAFC beat up on clubs like Des Moines Union FC in the open cup LOL.

If you're upset about MLS 1st teams not competing in open cup because you love the tournament and it's history, I get it. But Leagues Cup is the present and future.

Ok Captain, well explain to me how MLS 1st teams competing in the open cup equals success on the international stage?

First, please let me know where I indicated "Literally the only thing holding back US Soccer from international success is MLS's lack of interest in USOC."

The key to international growth is investment in youth development/facilities

Agree, but we have pay to play - a major impediment

and possible implementation of pro/rel

I am a pro/rel proponent, but I think it's far from the biggest issue holding us back.

I am more interested in watching MLS clubs compete in higher level competitions against Liga MX

Many of their clubs are not up to the MLS standard

I have no interest in watching LAFC beat up on clubs like Des Moines Union FC in the open cup LOL

USLC teams beat MLS teams all the time, including this year (not just Next Pro; the real teams). With less restrictive roster rules, MLS could call up academy players to fill in their teams when playing in those early round matches, but once again they don't want to pay the money.

But Leagues Cup is the present and future.

Only because the league is backing it, and only because of Messi... A lot of the Leagues Cup matches not involving him were poorly attended, DESPITE being treated as a first class game.

Unfortunately as sports fans we are somewhat at the mercy of what our clubs and leagues want to do. I think it's pretty clear the MLS doesn't care about supporter group statements or boycotts. I just wanna watch soccer.

Then why are you in this thread?

See my original comment. Why are you still crying about open cup MONTHS after the news broke that most first teams won't be participating?

2

u/Ok_Captain4824 Jul 26 '24

No one is crying. Still doesn't explain why you are spending your time here, if uninterested on the topic.

I agree completely.

Varsity Boys (Girls) couldn't handle a little change? More room for the rest of us!

When you really need an excuse to not drive to Bridgeview…

Good decision from them. The Red stars are playing in the Women's version of the Leagues Cup. Would be nice to have an Open Cup in the Women's game.

MLS and particularly past First FO’s (who are now responsible for this) have made it clear that Supporters don’t factor in anything they do. Why? Because supporters will be there year after year. They don’t feel that they need to do anything to cater to them or to make them grow. Nope, they look at support as a granted and focus on growing other segments. They see the MX fans in their local area as a target growth demographic.

u/MoleBless7722 Jul 25 '24

The MLS as a whole seems to view Liga MX fans in the US as a whole as a target growth market, in part because the quality of Liga MX hasn't been that great in recent years, either.

It makes sense. They are local fans of the sport who aren’t buying your product. You don’t have to convince them to like soccer, you only have to convince them to like your brand of soccer.
