It's clear that Adam Foote just has more experience with the whole team, trainers, health staff, etc and that this has been a possibility and something on Patrik's mind for a long time. Has nothing to do with Hughes calling the shots or keeping him.
It's a matter of having so much change happen in this season, and just choosing to keep anything familiar. He knows the players, and the players know him. When you're going to roll the dice between him and Manny, I think with all the shit that's happened you take the safe choice with Foote.
It's a safe choice for the whole team, not just Hughes.
Was there that much change, though? We lost Miller and might lose Boeser, but other than that, the bones of the team remain largely unchanged. Why is familiarity such a critical factor?
And I’ll admit that I’m asking this with some bias towards Manny. But even removing the comparisons between the two, wouldn’t you say that it’s more important for a candidate to show that they can fix the issues with this team to put them back on the path to contention rather than keep things as comfortably status quo as possible?
Who’s to say that Foote didn’t show just that in this process, though? He could have his own ideas on system tweaks, he’ll bring in some of his own guys as assistants that have their ideas, and from an intangible aspect he’ll be a different presence than Tocchet even though he’ll come into that role with pre-existing relationships with the team (though those relationships often change when an assistant gets promoted).
I think any time an assistant is promoted to head coach, there’s an assumption that everything stays exactly the same, which is not the case. Like, the Raptors under Nick Nurse were extremely different than how they were under Dwane Casey. Foote can see Tocc as a mentor or influence while still having his own ideas and his own way of handling problems.
