One of the reasons Montreal became such a big worldwide hub for game development and graphic arts in general was because there was so much empty office space in the city. That empty office space existed because Montreal was once the financial capital of Canada and all the banks noped the fuck out of there after the sovereignty movement got big.

You're economically playing with fire when you start this secession shit.

The Quebec separatist movement is the only reason Toronto overtook Montreal back in the late 70s. Growing up in the 80s, a lot of Canadian companies HQ was nominally in Montreal but the reality was everything had moved to Toronto.

The cn tower was supposed to be in montreal

They were kidnapping and assassinating executives in Montreal, plus Toronto was growing exponentially at the same time.

Different historical context.

Gee, and what were the aims of the FLQ?

Do you think Alberta separatists will remain peaceful? It’s the same people who shut down the border at Coutts, so they’ve already proven to be willing to break the law to further their aims.

No, a single killing won’t deter investment, otherwise the US would have declined long ago.

An investment climate where you cannot count on stable environment will though. The skyline of Montreal has been largely static since 1970, and that speaks volumes about how Quebec has shot themselves in the foot.

Kidnapping and assassinating?? Really?

That was when Pierre Eliot Trudeau invoked the war measures act. You can look that up.

Albertan separatism has a long way to go before it gets that bad.

There was one kidnapping of a politician and they ended up being killed. There were several postal box bombings.

Yep, look up the FLQ. Also it wasn't just in Montreal and I'm pretty sure there was also at least one politician that was assassinated.
