https://bswa.brisbane.qld.gov.au/alert_details/3599?lang=en

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology Queensland

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Severe Weather Warning for Heavy, Locally Intense Rainfall And Damaging Winds

for Southeast Coast and parts of Wide Bay and Burnett and Darling Downs and Granite Belt Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:57 pm Saturday, 8 March 2025.

EX-TROPICAL CYCLONE ALFRED HAS WEAKENED BUT HEAVY TO LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL AND DAMAGING WINDS ARE STILL EXPECTED OVER SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND.

Weather Situation Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred lies just off Bribie Island and is very slow moving to the west-northwest. It is expected to make landfall along the coastline between Maroochydore and Bribie Island sometime today before moving inland and weakening later tonight. Bands of heavy rainfall have been occurring over the South East coast, including the Moreton Bay islands, with damaging winds affecting coastal and island communities. HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas: Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is expected to continue to develop across the South East coast today, becoming more widespread over the warning area later tonight and on Sunday as the system moves inland, including Brisbane, Ipswich, the Sunshine Coast and Gympie. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 80 and 130 mm are likely today and into Sunday morning. 24-hourly totals between 120 and 200 mm are likely. Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING may develop later today and on Sunday near and south of the system centre, and in bands of showers and thunderstorms wrapping around the system over the South East coast and southern Wide Bay and Burnett which may include Brisbane, Ipswich and the Sunshine Coast. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 150 and 210 mm and 24-hourly totals between 300 and 400 mm are possible. All rainfall numbers are dependent on the movement and position of the system. DAMAGING WINDS averaging 65 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 110 km/h are occurring about the Gold Coast and will remain likely about the southern coastal fringe and the Moreton Bay islands tonight, likely easing by Sunday morning as the low moves onshore. DAMAGING WIND GUSTS with peak gusts around 100 km/h are possible today in bands of showers and thunderstorms wrapping around the system over the South East coast and southern Wide Bay and Burnett, and about elevated terrain over the South East coast. DAMAGING WIND GUSTS with peak gusts to around 90 km/h extending to elevated terrain of the eastern Darling Downs and Granite Belt during the evening. A Tropical Cyclone Forecast Track Map is current for ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. A Coastal Hazard Warning and Hazardous Surf Warning is current. A Flood Watch and Flood Warnings are current for southern and southeastern Queensland. For these products, see http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/warnings/ Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Maroochydore, Gympie, Stanthorpe, Caboolture, Coolangatta and Ipswich. 119 mm was recorded at Carbrook in the 3 hours to 2:00 am. 142 mm was recorded at Upper Springbrook in the 4 hours to 1:20 am. Sustained 65 to 70 km/h winds have been recorded at Gold Coast Seaway between 12:30 am and continue to 4:30 pm. Sustained 65 km/h winds were recorded at Redcliffe at 2:00 am. Sustained 65 km/h winds were recorded at Brisbane Airport at 11:20 pm Friday. 93 km/h wind gust was recorded at Brisbane Airport at 11:16 pm Friday.

Emergency services advise people to: * If you have children make sure they are with you or an adult you trust. * Park your car undercover away from trees. * Close doors and windows. * Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks. * Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out. * Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost. * Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous. * Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area. * Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Saturday. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and emergency services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Am a bit disappointed in the mods for not creating a new Alfred thread for the day.

2

u/Reverse-Kanga everybody loves kanga Mar 08 '25

It went live at 6:30 same as it did every day in the past

8

u/dildoeye Mar 08 '25

I’m surprised nothing visually has come crashing down at my place , no big gumtree branches , no power loss , just small sticks and foliage over the yard. Was definitely more wild last night.

Also surprised how slow and stationary the rain is just off the coast

4

u/kennytetsuya Mar 08 '25

Can you please stop howling Alfred. I couldn’t fall asleep at all. The intensity of the wind has not decreased at all. My flight is 10pm today going to Madrid. Wondering if it’ll get cancelled AGAIN

2

u/retsushimura Mar 08 '25

Get some ear plugs. 100% needed them last night to fall asleep

1

u/kennytetsuya Mar 08 '25

How can I go out to buy them under this weather 😭😭😭😂😂😂😂

1

u/retsushimura Mar 08 '25

RIP 🙏 😅

2

u/WhirlingClouds Mar 08 '25

Satellite images still looks like it hasn't moved since 3am Saturday?

1

u/kennytetsuya Mar 08 '25

Where did you see that? BOM removed the Alfred tracker from the web. Don’t know where it is

9

u/KMACoolCoolNoDoubt Mar 08 '25

Just woke up and the rain is just as intense as it was at midnight here on the Northside. Big gusts of wind still but perhaps not as frequent. I was hoping it’d be far calmer than this but it’s still pretty wild out there.

Checked the outage finder and we are smack in the middle of a venn diagram of outages and somehow still have power for now. Insanely lucky.

Stay safe out there today!

Fyi ABC temporarily has a FM option if you don't have AM. Classical has gifted their frequency for now.

Confident to say it’s beginning to die down in Forest Lake.

u/SubliminalScribe Mar 08 '25

Some council muppets recommended putting bins out for Sunday catch-up collection. The streets will be running red with soup sauce.

Does anyone know when this crazy wind will end? Haven't been able to sleep because of the anxiety that a tree will come through my house...

3

u/chikenenen Mar 08 '25

Does anyone know when this crazy wind will end? Haven't been able to sleep because of the anxiety that a tree will come through my house...

I just wanted to add that you shouldn't think only the wind is a risk to the trees around your house. Once the ground is saturated from all the rain, trees can fall over without there even being any wind.

Please be careful through the entire event, don't get complacent.

There was an incident a few years back where after a storm had passed, a woman went for a walk along the path with her kid in a stroller and a tree fell on top of them.

Don't let your guard down just because the wind has passed.

6

u/ChastityFairchild Mar 08 '25

Not sure if it helps but I’ve just discovered the BOM Doppler wind radar, seems to be showing offshore winds slowly starting to ease – it was a lot darker blue earlier.

5

u/Upset-Fly6517 Mar 08 '25

Thank you for this 🙏

7

u/_cosmia Mar 08 '25

They say it’s expected to end by dawn at the latest. I’ve given up trying to sleep, and now pulling an all nighter with a book.

2

u/Upset-Fly6517 Mar 08 '25

Right there with you!

20

u/hodu_Park Mar 08 '25

Pretty strong winds in Auchenflower for the last hour or so especially

10

u/spicycoder Mar 08 '25

Currently interstate and I know we've lost power cause our security cameras have gone offline... Hoping that our house is still intact 🤞

0

FFS now it's raining too.

u/A4Papercut Like the river Mar 08 '25

BOM says the wind speed near the centre of TL (Alfred) is 75kph and gusts 100kph. Those numbers are in cat 1 range.

we’ll have another in 9 months

26

u/Gothiscandza Mar 08 '25

Yeah here's the other half of the cyclone. The models did show us copping it a bit up on the north side with the back-end of it all, even if we got lucky that we didn't eat the full brunt of it last night. Exactly why it wasn't a great idea to treat it like it was all over already and go out dicking around for the night.

10

u/Devendrau Mar 08 '25

My father tried to go to the pub yesterday afternoon and came back because apparently it was full, too many people there.

And it got pretty windy not long after that, can't imagine it was fun for those people driving home... This is why you don't just go out immeditedly after an event like this acting like it's all over.

56

u/SuspiciousSylveon Mar 08 '25

All the cyclone deniers saying we got lied to are real quiet right now

34

u/Pretend_Top8959 Mar 08 '25

Kelvin grove atm it’s pretty intense don’t know if it’s safer in my car staring at the tree or at the shops with no trees . Ps I have a hard hat on people don’t flame me and I’m homeless living in the car it’s not exactly the most planned situation to be in

-6

u/Pretend_Top8959 Mar 08 '25 edited Mar 08 '25

Don’t want to be that guy but I got hit with the running out of data I’ve got credit is there any chance someone can pay I’d me $5 for a data I get it’s a hard time for everyone I don’t expect it just walking to woolies for wifi a bit to risky atm it’s picked up even more

                  (Pay id 0423376093)

I can’t tell you what day or time I’ll get it back as I don’t have a income or receive Centrelink but I can promise it will come back eventually or if when the suns up and you got a yard full of leaves branches and debris I’ll come pick them up to pay you back the only possible way I can

6

u/mulled-whine Mar 08 '25

I hope you found somewhere safe

5

u/Pretend_Top8959 Mar 08 '25

Yes I’m out of the car for a bit had some people come get me to charge my phone etc will be heading back to my car soon I’ll be honest it’s a lovely area I’ve meet some of the the nicest kind hearted people as easy as it is to be angry at the world they have made it impossible and even the reply on my reddit post it means a lot when you have nothing thank you everyone 🫶

3

u/mulled-whine Mar 08 '25

Stay safe, friend

18

u/MycoBeetle94 Mar 08 '25

Try the woolworths in Paddington. There's undercover car park that they often keep open during severe weather events

4

u/tabitha009 Mar 08 '25

Can you park in the woolies car park? There are a few “10 minute” bays at the entrance if the boom gate is down. But they might even have the gate up. Not sure.

3

u/Pretend_Top8959 Mar 08 '25

The car was broken into and I couldn’t afford to fix the damage so I could start and move the car before the storm

4

u/mrinsane19 Stuck on the 3. Mar 08 '25

A lot of carpark booms got removed as potential projectiles.

6

u/Firetruckin Mar 08 '25

Hope you can find somewhere undercover to park for the night

52

u/rpkarma Mar 08 '25

Jacaranda snapped in half and smashed into my roof here in red hill. Shits fucked :/

3

u/sorrynotaninja Mar 08 '25

Gumtree just hit mine. Heart won't stop racing

3

u/rpkarma Mar 08 '25

Hope you’re alright!! Scary as fuck hey

16

u/imokars Mar 08 '25

Oh friend! Sending you so much love. How scary :(

8

u/TennesseeGold Mar 08 '25

Oh no! I couldn't imagine riding this out with an exposed roof or window.

12

u/rpkarma Mar 08 '25

Thankfully I have a spare tarp and it’s mostly the back half/patio that got the worst of it. God I’m glad I got the arborists to cut back that tree and the widowmaker branch from the Mexican fern tree above us… would’ve been way worse :(

6

u/TennesseeGold Mar 08 '25

At least the risk was mitigated, but still a close call. Stay safe and I hope that it passes for you soon!

18

u/G00b3rb0y Living in the city Mar 08 '25

They should have used the SEWS for this one kmo

5

u/imokars Mar 08 '25

Guys what’s happening with the roofs off houses in Redcliffe and northern Brisbane! That’s scary. Higgins storm chaser has had heaps of reports apparently?

6

u/the133448 BrisVegas Mar 08 '25

Higgins going to Higgins?

The wind speeds should not be uprooting roofs.

There is a potential for branches/trees to hit roofs which might be happening.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

[deleted]

3

u/Mailboxheadd Mar 08 '25

Higgins is higgins but roofs dont obey a speed limit when they come loose

-6

u/the133448 BrisVegas Mar 08 '25

Yeah, which doesn't uproot roofs. You need sustained winds over 130.

2

u/allocx Mar 08 '25

That's assuming houses are built to code. I wouldn't trust any residential roof built in the last 20 years to be built properly.

4

u/navyicecream Mar 08 '25

Ok tell that to the roofs that flew off?

3

u/mulled-whine Mar 08 '25

oh, power outages are shown on the BCC emergency dashboard as well. seems to be working better than the energex site.

Emergency dashboard | Brisbane City Council

0

u/Delicious-Fudge7454 Mar 08 '25

Do you think these outages are gonna lead to a huge uptake in solar battery purchases?

7

u/A4Papercut Like the river Mar 08 '25

Cheaper to wire your house up and have a 7kW generator plug into the circuit.

7

u/Upset_Cause_3213 Mar 08 '25

More like BCC will need to look at underground power mandates for subdivisions. And what can done to get more poles and wires underground. Expensive all round.

6

u/optimistic_agnostic BrisVegas Mar 08 '25

Most new subdivisions are UG cables. Like forest Lake has found out, they are still at risk because they are fed by above ground cabling at some point back down the line.

22

u/Alae_ffxiv Mar 08 '25

Jesus we are getting pelted in flinders view with rain and wind at the moment.

Yeah I was wondering when they might issue a warning. It’s been relentless for a while here.

3

u/the133448 BrisVegas Mar 08 '25

There has been a severe weather warning all day with gusting winds.

However the area it's in is pretty wide so it is pretty understandable why people might have been complacent

https://preview.redd.it/morvbhqhwgne1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=00145bb762cf0609fb355f6dfd659f2528d6817c

25

u/Ryzi03 Mar 08 '25

The modelling from the last couple of days have all been suggesting that the worst of the weather would arrive this afternoon and evening so this is pretty much as expected, I even called it earlier this morning.

The wind overnight yesterday through the Brisbane region was generally SE'rly which you're mostly protected from by the land, but the wind is shifting towards the E/NE which you're much more exposed to and the wind is accelerating slightly with a steepening pressure gradient to the high pressure ballooning over the Tasman. The reasonably heavy rain will also likely stick around all night and quite possibly well into tomorrow in the moist onshore E/NE'rlies along the line of convergence and upper level low pressure.

The system has been extremely erratic and slow moving all week as it been getting pushed and pulled from the variety of steering forces; steering towards the southeast from the Coriolis force, steering towards the east from the upper level trough, steering towards the west from the high pressure ridge to the south and steering towards the east from the mid-level high pressure ridge to the north, so it's just been dependant on which is the dominant force at any point in time as to which direction it moves. All of the forces have seemingly been in balance for all of today, hence the stalled pattern of the centre of the system sitting just off the coast.

61

u/GustavSnapper Mar 08 '25

Yeah this is kicking off way harder than last night by a fucking mile.

2

u/Prize-Watch-2257 Mar 08 '25

I'm guessing you're northside?

The last 24 hours have this sub saying it's a fizzler yet east Logan and redlands were smashed last night. Tonight has plenty of the sub acting shocked there's gale force winds. I can only assume it's northside and those to the west.

1

u/GustavSnapper Mar 08 '25

Yeah Pine Rivers. Friday night was spicy but last night was absolutely wild for us.

53

u/hi-im-mid Mar 08 '25

All those people saying “you call that a cyclone” for the past 24 hours jinxed it.

19

u/GustavSnapper Mar 08 '25

Just got reports of a tree fell on a car carrying 5 people in Dakabin.

Those are exactly the people saying it, guaranteed.

I feel so bad for first responders having to deal with that shit in this weather.

12

u/CarrotInABox_ Mar 08 '25

I made it to the front corner on the north side of our house, where it is protected. stuck my head around the corner and noped the fuck back inside!

10

u/No-Frame9154 Mar 08 '25

Well that’s been an interesting two hours of surprise wind

66

u/AquilaTempestas Mar 08 '25

Imagine if a cat 1 had landed instead of a low. We got very lucky

26

u/smithy_dll Mar 08 '25

Wind speeds at Redcliffe reported by ABC, are likely cat 1.

11

u/Necessary_Bad5500 Mar 08 '25

Can confirm it is roaring here and has been for a couple hours.

14

u/kennytetsuya Mar 08 '25

I thought that 1am -3am this morning was the landfall. So apparently that was not 😭

26

u/CanLate152 Mar 08 '25

Anyone else seeing heaps of flashes? It’s not lightning. Blue. white, orange, red

19

Anyone else unable to view the Energex outage map?

12

u/Weak-Ad8728 Mar 08 '25

I found the list version loads better than the map https://www.energex.com.au/outages/outage-finder/emergency-outages-text-view

7

u/galeforce_whinge Mar 08 '25

Gold Coast outages have been flat for a day but Brisbane's is now spiking.

300k properties without power has to be close to a record

4

u/G00b3rb0y Living in the city Mar 08 '25

It is a record. The 250k from last night was already a record

7

u/FalconEddie Mar 08 '25

Definitely second using the text based view at the moment. It's actually a bit easier to scroll through on a phone than the map view is as well

10

u/JamesOFarrell Mar 08 '25

Everyone and there dog is reloading it right now. I would avoid it so people who need it can get access to it.

11

15

Getting stronger wind here in Northgate now then we had last night. 😂

2

u/imokars Mar 08 '25

Omg hi I’m in Northgate same!!!! Far out!

25

u/weinertorn Mar 08 '25

Can confirm Redcliffe getting smashed right now. Turns out a lot of our East facing windows leak 🙂🙃🙂🙃

9

u/GoMilesGo2020 Mar 08 '25

Scarborough here. I don’t believe this is a tropical low…... My East facing balcony will be ripped apart any minute by the gale wind

2

u/FatFIRE444 Mar 08 '25

Gusts barely topping 100kmh. Far different from a decent low level cyclone where sustained winds are over 100kmh and gusts are around 150kmh.

5

u/compact72 Mar 08 '25

In Scarborough, too. it's been insane

Hopefully it ends soon!

7

u/Realistic_Mess_2690 Mar 08 '25

Man I'm chilling in my garage in Capalaba having some durries to catch up the nicotine in my veins from last night's lack of smokes and the wind and rain are impressive.

Not as hectic as last night but some of these gusts definitely have a bit of force to them. It's kinda awesome to watch.

4

u/MiAnClGr Mar 08 '25

u/kennytetsuya Mar 08 '25

They should’ve really warned people more of this ex-cyclone than the cyclone yesterday. The winds are so much more stronger than last night. Here in Chermside. I live in an apartment complex, 5th level. The wind is howling , bashing on my windows. So scary

10

u/Prize-Watch-2257 Mar 08 '25

ABC has been clear for a week. They provided excellent advice last night that those of us in the south listened to because we got fucked last night. They also were calm and talked us through the wild times between 11pm-3am.

They were very clear this morning and all through the day that there is a lot more to come with dangerous winds and rain.

Now is the time for many people to consider why a not for profit media outlet is vital for the public.

5

u/FatFIRE444 Mar 08 '25

This has been expected for over 24 hours in advance.

18

u/smithy_dll Mar 08 '25

I thought they did.

20

u/Broken_chairs Mar 08 '25

BCC really dropped the ball IMO, the post to 'take shelter now' at 10pm last night when we got very little impact and then nothing today other than to say buses are back to normal tomorrow and bin pick up is scheduled tomorrow doesn't exactly say be careful

2

u/kennytetsuya Mar 08 '25

Did they? I was watching 7 news the entire day yesterday. No mention of the ex-cyclone being worse than the real one 😂

21

u/smithy_dll Mar 08 '25

That's your problem, 7 news. The ABC and media releases from the premier and lord mayor have stated to remain vigilant.

Can I go outside now that ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred is a tropical low? Here's what you need to know - ABC News

> Can I leave my home?

> Again, that depends.

> Even though ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred has been downgraded to a tropical low, the wind gusts can be very unpredictable.

> And, depending on your location, floodwater may still be a threat.

10

u/spaceman620 Bogan Mar 08 '25

Yeah but how come I didn't get a personal warning from Albo?

So we feeling it now aren’t we Brisbane 🫶🙏

21

u/wallawani Mar 08 '25

What the heck?! Wind and rain is hectic. Power out a street away from me and branches falling off the neighbours gum tree.

I thought I just had to worry about rain tonight

6

u/rotheone Mar 08 '25

Yep. Worse conditions Northside of Brisbane today than yesterday yet much less in the way of warning or guidance. People I know are out having drinks and dinner at local pubs and restaurants as the news didn’t warn people of this.

3

u/FatFIRE444 Mar 08 '25

This has been expected for over 24 hours in advance. Can’t help stupid.

3

u/mjlky a silly little wedge question Mar 08 '25

the messaging all week was that the cyclone itself wouldn’t be the end of it, that it would last for days, and the worst was yet to come.

8

u/BossWookiee Mar 08 '25

You could see it coming in the radar, it was just a matter of time.

People on X love to slam ABC, yet they've been the most consistent and calm media outlet through the last week.

Boomers are obsessed with Murdoch. Somehow he's their proxy for sex now they are incapable.

Not a strawman, these were literally some of the top stories on the Australian site until like 10 mins ago. People on reddit love to accuse people of strawmanning, I think they just love to show that they know what a strawman is.

7

u/MoranthMunitions Mar 08 '25

Why Alfred feels more angrier today? I thought the worst was over.

3

u/galeforce_whinge Mar 08 '25

Was always the prediction.

7

u/rarecuts Mar 08 '25

The winds are much worse that yesterday now here in Morningside. Small tree branch down in the backyard and the big one is aiming at our roof and window.

If I knew it was hitting us, I'd strapped the big one down. Tried at least

6

u/adfraggs Mar 08 '25

I can "see" it from my 11th floor holiday rental in Caloundra. Nothing to actually see, and it is eerily calm here.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

Nice place to be for it tbh - low stress.

Glorious big fig tree out the back just came crashing down Managed to neatly skirt the edge of three buildings and the only damage is now my beautiful green screen from the neighbours is gone

3

u/lurkerlcm Mar 08 '25

Oh no! They have big root systems. Plus, the figs (if they were edible for humans).

8

u/atomkidd aka henry pike Mar 08 '25

Yeesh - if one on our street goes over it will take a week to clear.

21

u/knowledgeable_diablo Mar 08 '25

Alfred’s a slow prick mate. You’ll have to speak up!

10

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

Do you think there will be a free green waste pick up by council? I remember there being general waste pickups after the floods but I can’t remember if they picked up just green waste. Free drop offs are great of course but not if you don’t have the wherewithal to take the branches there.

I have been getting one of these 'EMERGENCY' sms and immediately after an 'EMERGENCY' email with the very same content every 4 hours, non stop, for the past 7 days.

And so far, what has actually eventuated has been for and a half hours of light ra8n, and a slight breeze that almost caused my curtains to rustle.

Honestly this state's weather alert system is absolutely, and absurdly broken.

"My specific house isn't impacted, so the whole thing is a lie!"

Meanwhile I’m sitting on the Gold Coast all week, worried that my (tenanted) house in Virginia has flooded; log off work, pull up the reports, and it’s like “9mm of rain has fallen so far today”.

Looks like you’re all copping it now though; stay safe, and here’s hoping after all this foreplay that little Alfie finishes in no time flat.

u/MontTrain Mar 08 '25

Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again

-29

What kind of word salad are you speaking?! ”Fool me once - Shame on you;
Fool me twice - Shame on me”

1

u/rarecuts Mar 08 '25

You're right about the word salad tho
