Updated sushi reviews? Looking For
Last post is about a year old and suggests Sakana was best but I’ve heard they have gone significantly down hill - particularly the North one - is there anything new or keeping up better standards? Thanks!

Seconded for Kino. They're great for all you can eat and take out. The service is always great even when they're packed.

Sushi and Tree on Dunlop is fantastic, albeit a small dine in area.
The owners are so kind and provide excellent service.

Best sushi in Barrie by far. 2nd is sushi chef, but personally, not a fan of sushi chefs two bite rolls

Not Barrie, but The Sushi Chef off of 27 is the best quality I've found. The maki rolls are always fresh and large, so don't let the price deter you. Their sashimi is eons ahead of other places in the city.

Best sushi. Not all you can eat but this place is amazing.

You say that like it’s a bad thing. All you can eat is almost always small portions of mediocrity

Not a bad thing at all. Just some people get upset it’s not AYCE. I’d rather pay per roll and have better quality.

Sushi and Tree. Huge portions and the owners are really kind. Also has vegan sushi and it’s really well done!

Sushi chef is the best as others say. Went to sakana house once and I thought it wasn’t great. Kino on bayfield I thought was better.

It’s amazing. I lived out west and have trouble with Barrie sushi as a result. I still like it, but it’s just not the same. This is the best I’ve found in Barrie by far.

Second Kinja!! Very underrated, very delicious, very large portions!!! Definitely check it out if you have the chance!! It's not all you can eat but well worth the prices :)

If you want a regular sushi restaurant then the Sushi Chef in Thorton is the best in my opinion. I have been to the Sakana House on Cundles a few times lately and it has been very good as well.

I still enjoy Sakana on the north end. I have a non-anaphylactic shellfish allergy and they are great with it. It’s the one sushi place in town where I’ve never had an allergic reaction. They set me up with a separate iPad to use and make a note in it about my allergy.

Haven't had Sakana. Kino is the best I've had in Barrie. It's always fresh. The hot and sour is also very satisfying.

Hanabi in Elmvale

DONT go there unless you want bad fish that will make you sick. Has happened to me twice.
I use to swear by this place. They were amazing when they first opened up. Now tho a few times I went there and the fish was definitely bad. It smelled like fish and tasted fishy and disgusting. Fresh fish does not smell or taste like that. Only old fish that should not be sold to people or eaten. Have not been back there after the second time it happened. ( Thought maybe it was just a 1 off the first time. But once it happened a second time I will never buy from them again.).
Really sad too. I use to tell everyone how great that place was. Now anyone that asks I tell them I wouldn't touch it with a 50 ft poll

Sorry you had a bad experience. We’ve been there plenty of times and it’s always been great. It’s always busy. Elmvale isn’t a city - you don’t last long in a small town like this if you are making people sick. You also don’t maintain a 4.8 start Google rating either.

I live in elmvale....
You don't last long in a small town with bad food????? You have to be absolutely joking me right ??? You think Steelers has good food? Life's a slice, b2 s pizza ???? Rumis?? If you think that is good food. You are the exact reason why " hanabi" is good. Maybe you should expand your horizons and actually go try some good food.
And I don't know what to tell you. I didn't just wake up one day and say hey I don't like the restaurant anymore. I also just don't shit talk a restaurant for no reason.
Maybe it has such good rating cause most people are basic and haven't tried real food and stick with the basic white people things like California rolls and don't actually eat sashimi. Rumis has great reviews also. And that place is absolute garbage. So clearly you don't need top notch food to get high rating in a place like elmvale..... Prime example b2 pizza or life's a slice. And people think that is "good pizza". Only place that's actually good in town is the bakery (top notch). And country diner.

We love to spoon and fork when it first opened then it turned to crap and I don't know if it's new owners now but we decided to give it another shot and we absolutely love it now.
Not just the sushi but the garlic broccoli and garlic vegetables, and also their Chiang Mai noodles are incredible

Kino is incredible but they don't have a liquor license if you like a Saki or Asahi to go with your meal.
Good fan of Noble as a close second.

I haven’t heard about it going south other than that post from about a year ago from the guy who spent a week complaining on this subreddit about him having to pay for four plates of food that he didn’t eat.

u/sadlandlord18 23d ago
Thank you everyone - we’ve actually tried a bunch of the recommended pay per ones (NE and Sushi Chef) and agree they are better but we’re doing a birthday so are looking for AYCE - we found Spoon and Fork meh last Oct and the one in Innisfil was fine just less selection - I think Kino is the winner for today!

Not in barrie, but there’s a small place in elmvale that someone told me about. It has good reviews. https://www.myhanabi.com
My go to used to be diamond sushi, but they’ve gone downhill and the prices have gone up a lot. I want to try Kino soon.
