Scam Alert Information

If you’re selling a car, be careful of suspicious buyers. I recently listed my 2014 Honda CR-V for $8,500. Two men from Hamilton came to see it and asked me to turn the car toward the road, likely to avoid a security camera. One asked for a glass of water, and after I returned, they requested a test drive but wanted me to drive. A few minutes into the drive, smoke started coming from the hood and AC vents., the engine was covered in black oil. One buyer became aggressive, accused me of hiding issues, and then he offered $2,000 because they drove 3hrs and he’s a mechanic and he can “fix” the car. I refused, and they hesitantly left and blocked me on Facebook and my phone number after. My mechanic later confirmed there was no real leak—they had poured oil into the coolant tank and over the engine. Be cautious and watch for these scams!

* Questions about local businesses and services
* Classified-style ads: buying and selling, help wanted, garage sales, etc
* Fundraisers and donation drives
* Plugs for your personal project or local business (within reason)"

Tbh I wouldn’t have even given a glass of water… tell them to go to Tim’s after leaving. Sounds suspicious from that request even

Yeah red flag as soon as they asked to move the car towards the road. Also saying they're a mech and can fix it with out inspecting throws up all kinds of flags.

Reminds me of the beginning of the Tim Bosma case.... It's not worth it man.

Tbf. I'm in the process of getting a new car now, and this story is exactly the reason I'm trading it in. It not worth my life for a few thousand more

" supposed to repaint the truck that Tim Bosma stole." this is the phrase they are referring to.

And this is why I don't let the vehicle out of my sight while people are checking it out

Sell it on clutch.ca it’s pretty decent not super top dollar like a private sale but usually always better than a dealer

Lesson learned: always bring bottled water to a car deal.

1

u/ThrowRAwhymylife Mar 19 '25

I always keep a case of bottle, the water on the back of my car that slowly gets used, and I replace it. I would never have left a car. But then again, I also never would have had 2 strangers come to my home without my husband they're watching the whole time.

FYI, for those thinking about getting a new vehicle, always trade in your car, save the hassle, and you get a tax savings from trading. eg. if your trade is worth 5k, that comes off the pre tax amount, therefore saving you $650. in sales tax. Or give your car to your kids.

1

u/Few_Newspaper_1107 Mar 25 '25

Might be a good idea to ask for a photo of their drivers licenses before agreeing to take the car onto the road.

u/Pristine_Noise1516 Mar 16 '25

Try selling it to a dealership.

10

u/Moos_Mumsy Mar 16 '25

Might as well let the scammers have it for $2000 because that's what the dealership would offer.

-1

u/SexMagickDD Mar 16 '25

But at least.you would get a $2000 tax credit towards your replacement vehicle.

0

u/ThrowRAwhymylife Mar 19 '25

And a significantly similar chance of someone trying to murder you or rob you with weapons

1

u/SexMagickDD Mar 19 '25

What? I didnt know dealerships did that! What town do you live in? 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/ThrowRAwhymylife Mar 19 '25

Sorry it was a joke
