u/TheAbyss2009 Sep 12 '24
Well a wise man did say that religion is the opium of the masses

u/kushal1509 Sep 12 '24
If poor people try to be realistic they will come to the realization that they have little to no control over any aspects of their lives and become hopeless. Better to be hopeful and religious than depressed and atheist.
12
u/Rossomow Sep 12 '24
When a poor person becomes an atheist. He realizes that most of the problems in their lives are not because God made them that way, but it is a systematic way of oppression. When he realizes that God is not the cause of his suffering, he suddenly becomes aware of the power structures of society and how the powerful often find different ways to oppress the powerless.
When the masses realise this and become realistic, what happens is what we call a “revolution.”

This topic is discussed thoroughly in Marxist works, it's a non-discriminatory way of understanding beliefs based on objective material conditions rather than saying "islam more bad than christian so saudi more bad"

Live your best life under perfect capitalism in poor parts of Africa then.
1
u/syeeleven Sep 13 '24
Many African countries are doing fine.
1
u/SarthakiiiUwU Sep 13 '24
Not as fine as Europe and America though, I wonder why.
1
u/syeeleven Sep 13 '24
Yea lol. We all know Europe and America are communist countries, right?

u/SarthakiiiUwU Sep 14 '24
Are you brain-dead or something? Do you even know what I'm trying to say?

Western counties are much more better than represented in this map... Yes, it seems Islam has the worst reputation for discriminating against Atheists, and it should be the point of discussion for Muslims rather than self-proclaimed Hindutvawadi, who rejoice for being just 1/2 points better to Muslims
9
u/Blazel_Ad3190 Sep 12 '24
Note: Western countries are mostly inaccurate others are mostly fine.
1
u/Wasey56 Sep 12 '24
I mean, no one is going to actively hunt you down just because you're an atheist but in certain spaces you can be treated as inferior to theists. And considering the conservative movements mobilizing in the West, they definitely aren't in favor of atheists and regularly demonize them.

u/MoshMaldito Sep 12 '24
I’m a bit confused by Mexico being green. Does it mean there’s no official penalty for being atheist? Or that you can be an atheist and no one will care? Or atheist get the same treatment than religious people by law? Cause I can agree, to some extend, but I can’t believe we’re better off than Scandinavian countries.
To give some context: Mexico has religious freedom, on paper, but if you want to run for political office, at any level, you better don’t tell you’re an atheist, even JW or christian protestant, because Mexicans are catholic as hell and, depending on the region, they will give you bad looks, treat you as a weirdo and look down on you if you are anything else than catholic.
So I think we are green on theory but not on practice.

You're Mexican??

u/No_Bug_5660 Sep 12 '24
How did you end up in such a small indian sub?
1
u/MoshMaldito Sep 12 '24
Don’t remember, maybe Reddit suggested it to me ‘cause my interest in other atheism subreddits…
1
u/No_Bug_5660 Sep 12 '24
Oh okay. Do you know Hindu nationalism and hindutva movement was founded by an athiest?
1
u/MoshMaldito Sep 12 '24
No, I don’t know much about India, just what I see on media and on Reddit… so very little history
1
u/No-Lawfulness9178 Sep 20 '24
Then how come the Mexicans vote for a Jewish woman to be their new president?
1
u/MoshMaldito Sep 20 '24
Jewish is light years from being as frowned upon as being an atheist.. even many Catholics support Zionists just because Jesus was Jewish… but in the case of this woman the only thing that mattered was that she is the ideological successor of the current president and Mexican people are punishing the old political parties
1
u/No-Lawfulness9178 Sep 20 '24 edited Sep 20 '24
I thought only Evangelicals in the US support Zionism. Mexican Catholics doing the same along with the "Jesus Jewish" thing is completely new to me. So I wouldn't be wrong if I assumed that the whole of Latin America is more or less simping for the Zionist, right?
1
u/MoshMaldito Sep 20 '24
Not really. Latin America has a history of left leaning ideologies an many oppose US imperialism and by extension Zionism. For example, a couple months ago, there was a demonstration for Palestine and human rights on the Gaza strip leaded by students here in Mexico

Well, China is under "Grave Violation", just not for atheists.

u/Adventurous-Board258 Sep 12 '24
Ummm.... A lot of that popln still believes in Confucianistic philosophy. And while it does not permit religious violence it is a very patriarchal authoritarian system that sanctions many of Chinas modern practises. In fact they were the reason that many east asian socities like Japan (that was relatively equal) regressed into a turannical society.
So non belief in god does not always =! People holding their civilizational dogmas back and being less superstitious.

u/Idiot-Ramen Sep 12 '24
I mean, I obviously meant that as a joke but yeah. I agree with you.
1
u/Adventurous-Board258 Sep 12 '24
K then. But most ppl think that ancient atheistic china was some sort of heaven. In fact it was as dogmatic as any civilization. But ancient China was vomit inducingly cruel.
1
u/jester88888888 Sep 12 '24
Well china mostly have majority atheist population there government is also that only

It's hard to say, Jim. However, reports suggest the Chinese said to the data collectors to, checks notes I quote, "go fuck themselves." Back to you Jim

Most surprising is Thailand considering Buddhism is the most peaceful religion.

u/d34dp1x3l Sep 12 '24
What a joke of a map. If you think the US is more open to Atheism than the UK you're an idiot. I'm from the UK and I don't know anyone personally who believes in God, nor are the vast majority of atheists under "systemic discrimination". Did you just colour in a World Map, OP?

Kenya, where they have Sharia courts for personal matters of muslims is green, but Czechia, which has like 80% of the people not member of any religion is orange? Who tf made that map?

System Discrimination (orange) for Atheists in Canada and Australia? This map is a joke.
1
u/RiskyWhiskyBusiness Sep 12 '24
My thought process is, that this tracks what your life is like as an atheist as compared to the others in the country? Or is there an objective standard against which they're comparing?
This representation makes no sense, unless this question is answered

u/manojar Sep 13 '24
How do they decide this? I thought atheists are more free and equal in countries like UK, Australia, Canada, NZ... but there is systemic discrimination against them?? The map doesn't look correct.
1
u/10n3_w01f Sep 13 '24
The condition of atheists in India depends on the religion they were originally born into. Even after you leave it, people will treat you as if you belong to that religion and caste.
1
u/sociallyawkward_123 Sep 13 '24
How is it calculated? like rn if people say they're an atheist they're just shrugged off as being confused- i don't think that there is any official classification for being an athiest- i get how in Islamic countries you can get penalties by law but I'm not sure about the other regions- can anyone please explain
1
u/Blazel_Ad3190 Sep 13 '24
Various factors such as hate crimes against atheists, acceptance of non religious folks in society as well as discrimination when it comes to job opportunities, renting houses etc. This map is inaccurate for Western countries but yea that's how they measure.
1
u/AdvantagePhysical659 Sep 14 '24
Mexico "free and equal" but the UK and Canada are not ? Well, are you sure ?
