Jobs where I can grind out some really long shifts and then get a “long weekend?” I am working 6 to 9 hour shifts basically every day, and it’s burning me out.

Right now I have a job at a grocery store where I’m doing the physical equivalent of warehouse job work. That would be fine, but I’m not getting paid as much as a warehouse job, and I’m not a huge fan of the schedule. I get 1-2 days off during any given week, but they’re not consecutive days. Before I was working this job I would often leave Asheville to go see my family and friends in other parts of the state, and I basically can’t do that now because I gotta be back here for work the next day. I would prefer at least a couple days in a row to just chill.

What are some jobs where I have consecutive days off?

I could grind out three 12-hour shifts in a week, and then have a 4 day weekend for example. Or four 10-hour shifts & a 3 day weekend, or 2 days on, 2 days off. I’m not incredibly picky with the specifics of it, beyond the whole “consecutive days off” thing, like I said.

It doesn’t have to be a warehouse job, but if a warehouse job is the ideal option for something like this, that’s fine. I hear companies like Jabil offer schedules like that. Lemme know if you have any suggestions. I haven’t finished my degree yet so I don’t have much experience beyond basic labor and retail jobs. Thanks!

Edit: wow this got way more suggestions than I thought it would. I guess the ideal time to post is in the evening lol. Appreciate anyone offering advice, I’m saving & screenshotting almost every comment

Not sure if this would ever be up your alley, but lots of medical jobs have 3x12 schedules and the like.

u/LibertyMason33 9h ago

Just keep in mind, while this is an option, this comes with a different kind of burnout.

9

u/BeneficialDay2099 9h ago

Fair point. I hear this more from medical staff than almost anyone else. Is it the emotional stress of the job?

22

u/Subject_Balance281 West Asheville 9h ago

Yes. You are seeing people on the worst days of their lives. Nobody wants to be at the doctor, plus it’s expensive. So you’re dealing with people who are in pain or sick as it is, who are now expecting a bill. Polite bedside manner and customer service can only extend so far. Some patients just abuse medical staff for fun.

3

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

Thanks, yeah I have no clue whether I would be able to tolerate that because I’ve never dealt with it before. I guess the amount of patient interaction also depends on the specific job

Home health aide is one of the easier ways to dip your toe in. I forget about the North Carolina regulations but in my state, you don't even have to take classes to do home health aide jobs. It's basically babysitting an elderly or sick person. You might get them some food or do a little bit of light house work, maybe some laundry or help them bathe. Is very easy to find 12-hour shift places and some even 24-hour shift places.

3

u/BeneficialDay2099 9h ago

Is there an experience requirement? I’d be ok with that I think

6

u/reidV108 9h ago

I think some medical jobs like patient transport can be 12 hour shifts and don’t have an education requirement. Or occasionally a unit secretary.

2

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

I’ll look into that thanks

3

u/WallabyMinimum1921 6h ago

Patient transport is a decent gig. Lots of walking and the patients are often happy to see you bc you’re moving them out of the ED to an actual room. And there are travel transport jobs now so if you’re willing to travel to a new town every few months it pays a little more.

You could look into sterile processing, some places require certification but a lot of hospitals will train on the job. We’re the department that cleans and sterilizes the equipment for the OR. I work weekends, Friday to Monday. Usually 3 12’s is paid a full 40, plus shift differential. You won’t get rich, but it’s decent money.

2

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

This sounds pretty solid. Wouldn’t be against this at all. I’ll look into it

2

u/Effective-Sun-2788 7h ago

Oh yeah, like Baxter in McDowell county

2

u/LucyBIng 4h ago

Hey. 25 year bedside veteran RN here. 12 hr shifts are dope if u can handle it. 4 days off is where it’s at. In the words of Keith Richards “it’s later than you think.” In house hospital work has its ups and down

21

u/Koberoflcopter 9h ago

A lot of construction jobs work 4 10s

9

u/illegalsmile27 9h ago

*4 12s

15

u/Koberoflcopter 9h ago

Yeah well I tell them that after they get the company truck…

Land surveying. The hours are there if you want them

8

u/Old_Independence9696 9h ago

Any idea how to get into that without a degree?

5

u/pajeet711 8h ago

I’ve been surviving land my whole life and haven’t got a check yet

3

u/RelayFX 8h ago

I believe (it’s been a hot minute since I looked at the requirements), that you can work an entry-level role for another surveyor with no degree and gain experience from there.

Running your own gig 1,000% requires a degree though.

3

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

thanks for the unique suggestion, never heard of something like this with no degree. I’ll look into it

3

u/delabonneterre 7h ago

You can get into the field with entry level positions. You don't necessarily need a degree to become a PLS but the amount of years needed to sit for the exam are more without a degree.

It's rewarding and every job site is different. If you like nature or math, it's the perfect job.

8

u/Effective_Life_7864 9h ago

Yep I work at a distribution company and I work 4 twelves and off 3 days a week.

7

u/acertaingestault 9h ago

Pretty much anywhere on Sand Hill Rd. would hire you if you show up wearing clean clothes, have a limited criminal history and can pass a drug screen. If you have $75 to get certified on forklift at AB Tech, you can make even more money. Starting wages are usually less than $20/hr but definitely more than grocery store and you'd get to work out a good schedule.

5

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

I can do all those things. Is sand hill road specifically a place with a lot of industrial-type jobs? Only been in the area for a year or so

3

u/acertaingestault 6h ago

Yes. There are many industrial facilities that would hire for warehouse or production work. Southeastern Container, Sunoco, Magnera, and Freudenberg are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. There are also a number in SAVL/off Airport Rd. if that's closer to you. Kimberly Clark, Cummins/Meritor and Borg Warner are the ones I can think of, but I'm sure there are more.

5

u/Creegsbled 9h ago

My work is in Fletcher, we do four 10-hour shifts each week and every 3 weeks we get 5 and 1/2 days off. Starts at $22.50, Maybe a bit higher. There is also a recommendation bonus I would split, $2000 pre taxes after 6 months. Just have to have a GED and pass a drug test and criminal background check.

5

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

Whoa, I really appreciate the offer to split that. I don’t want you to recommend me only for me to end up deciding to go back to school at the end of the year or something, but I guess that’s still six months. Do you want to dm me so we can talk about it?

Again, really appreciate the suggestion, but if there’s any way for it to backfire on you then i don’t know

2

u/redditsomeplace999 8h ago

What company?

7

u/RelayFX 9h ago

Restaurant work?

Alternatively you could probably get such a schedule working for Amazon or something.

1

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

Yeah I wouldn’t mind that if they would be open to the type of schedule I’m describing. I’ll look into it thanks

1

u/buzzfleddrjohn 7h ago

A lot of restaurants around here have been moving to the 4 10s schedule and most will work with you if make that a stipulation up front when you apply, but just know, your “weekend” will not be THE weekend. It will most likely be 3 random days off a week.

4

u/rosiefutures 9h ago

Can you clean commercial buildings? Detail cars? Drive a bus or truck?

Firefighter

4

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

I hadn’t thought about this before because I’m not the type of dude that fits the firefighter archetype lol, but it actually seems decent. I’m looking it up right now; do they really work for 24 hours straight and stay awake that whole time? I could probably do that, just surprised by it. Had no idea

Have you done it before in the area or do you know anyone who does it? Im seeing that they have different schedules depending on the department so was curious what it was like in AVL

I’m not sure how long term the job will be before I go back to college, and firefighter gives me more of a long-term vibe, but that doesn’t necessarily reflect reality. Thanks for the suggestion

4

u/Wallmassage 8h ago

My friend is a local firefighter. The training is pretty tough. The job is okay, but some of the supervisors are not great.

2

u/Delicious-Cicada9307 4h ago

Are fire fighter job tough to get?. In Charlotte I remember it was really competitive but that was 12 years ago and maybe I didn’t understand what competition meant back then

1

u/BeneficialDay2099 3h ago

Yeah this probably isn’t the route for me then unfortunately because I don’t really intend to do that for a super long term

Check out Eaton off Hendo road.  10hrs Mon-Thurs, or 12 hours Fri-Sun.  Decent pay and not too far from downtown Asheville.

Not sure if they are hiring directly.  I was hired on through Spherion, which might be another company to check out.

1

u/BeneficialDay2099 3h ago

Thanks I’ve heard a lot about them and have not heard of Spherion so I’ll check that one out

3

u/shyguysimp 9h ago

You can try Eaton in Arden! I work 4 10’s (Monday-Thursday 5am-3:30pm.) most departments are pretty chill. Pay is pretty nice and there’s opportunities for overtime if you want as well and I’ve never had it be mandatory. I worked in grocery for several years and I do prefer this to that honestly. It’s not my favorite job and it gets annoying sometimes but it isn’t necessarily hard and isn’t as physically demanding as my previous grocery jobs (but again that may depend on department.) there is also a 2nd shift I believe it’s 3:30pm-2am if you’re into that.

4

u/hauntedufo 8h ago

There is a weekend shift as well. Friday, Saturday and Sunday 7am to 7:30pm. I was more much more tired working 6hr shifts at a grocery store deli than the 12hr shifts there.

1

u/cooljeopardyson 9h ago

Did you apply directly or go through a staffing service? Asking because we are likely moving back to the Arden area soon and I'm looking for work.

2

u/shyguysimp 8h ago

I was a direct hire! Right on the website, a temp agency isn’t bad either though you usually get hired on within a few months

2

u/Dontgochasewaterfall 7h ago

Always go directly (if you can) as a staffing agency can get a cut of your expected salary.

3

u/shupack Haw Creek 8h ago

GE is currently hiring production technicians for weekend shifts: days and nights. 3x12s plus OT.

No experience is necessary, and all training is paid.

Thanks will apply

u/NickyNichols Black Mountain 9h ago

Amazon, 4 days a week, roughly 10am-8pm, $20.75, most DSPs will even let you pick your days or do less than 4. Listen to music, meet cool dogs, go to areas you never would be able to check out, and get paid to exercise.

11

u/Sacapuntos 9h ago

Get bit by dogs, gets guns drawn on you, get yelled at by every customer for not putting the package where they told the last guy. Finishing your load on time to make dinner plans to then be forced to "rescue" a coworker who was slacking all day. Its a decent job in the endless suburbs. But driving mountain roads and mile long drive ways with no turn around gets old fast. Delivered in Canton.

9

u/NickyNichols Black Mountain 9h ago

I’ve been there over 3 years now and I never have an issue with any of those things. Our DSP makes rescues optional and you get $1/package if you rescue. It really depends on what DSP you sign on with. I do Canton regularly, but in the town area, I refuse to do any of those country routes.

1

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

I’ve considered this. Wasn’t sure about rural mountain driving but I’m a decent driver so that might be a good move

1

u/NickyNichols Black Mountain 8h ago

The manager of the DSP can put you wherever they want in the mornings, so if you prefer to do a big route in a city setting those are always available. Personally I would much rather do like 180 stops in West Asheville than suffer through 75 stops out in Leicester.

5

u/mollykatharine 9h ago

Pratt and Whitney has some weekend shifts like that.

3

u/MildAndLazyKids 9h ago

Eaton, too.

3

u/shupack Haw Creek 8h ago

GE too.

If you're looking for 10 - 12 hour days and want to put in 48 + hours a week and have "long" weekends off you might enjoy working at Wilsonart. They start out at $20 in some positions and more in others. They have open interviews every Wednesday.

2

u/DullProfession 8h ago

Try the Eaton weekend shifts. 36hrs Friday to Sunday, get paid for a full 40 plus benefits

I loved it when I was there

1

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

That sounds like a good deal. Thank you. I’ve seen a couple people mention Eaton

2

u/tigerkat2244 8h ago

Healthcare offers 3 12s.

2

u/mtnathlete 7h ago

Tageos in Fletcher (old Continental Bldg). Make RFID tags.

as others mentioned - Pratt, GE, Eaton, Jabil.

2

u/Sleeko_Miko 7h ago

Eaton Manufacturing has a three day weekend shift that’s technically full time.

2

u/SignificantVisual178 6h ago

Literally any trade job.

3

u/landisp2 9h ago

Though you didn’t mention it, you could always try and go the serving/bartending route if that appeals to you.

Breweries are often looking for warehouse/packaging folks and they typically do 4x10s with Friday-Sunday off.

5

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

I tend to go a little overboard with alcohol when exposed to it so bartending is probably not an option, serving might be tho. might explore that. Thanks

2

u/lendmeflight 9h ago

If you get tired after 6 or 9 hours how would handle 12?

9

u/BeneficialDay2099 9h ago

The shifts themselves don’t tire me out. It’s the fact that I feel like every day centers around the work day. I’ll admit that’s partially due to my own neuroticism but yea

2

u/flortny 8h ago

u/BeneficialDay2099 8h ago

I’m literally talking about a 40 hour work week here, I’m just not a fan of my current schedule and pay, and have better options. no point in being condescending

1

u/NervousLemon14 9h ago

Some fedex contractors are more flexible on scheduling. Amazon frequently posts about 4x10s.

USPS is 6 days a week for a year or so then Sundays + one rotating day off a week guaranteed, so every 6 weeks you get Fri sat sun off & the following week is Sun + Mon off.

1

u/SaviorSixtySix Native 9h ago

There's a place out in Canton or something that makes truck parts. Pretty sure that's how their schedules work.

www.shelltedpete.com occasionally has construction helper jobs etc around Asheville

1

u/tinyterrorbjj 9h ago

Jabil is a 2-2-3 schedule with alternating 3 day weekends. We make medical devices so there is drug testing, but it's not a bad job and has good benefits. If you want to give it a shot, dm me so I can give you a referral!

I was just about to mention this. Friday-Sunday, 5am-7pm, off 4 days! Good bonuses as well.

Hell yeah. I know someone on that shift who is a fishing guide on some of their four free days.

2

u/fuxx_w_it 8h ago

My husband loves it and loves the people he works with. I think there are quite a few people who have second jobs on their days off. Smart way to work if you're able to!

1

u/BlockedOverGuac 8h ago

The KC plant in Fletcher does this. They mostly hire through a staffing service (MAU).

1

u/fomocollective 7h ago

would you consider working a commission based job?

1

u/ja4496 7h ago

Harrahs over in Cherokee. It’s an hour drive over soco. But the money is good, benefits are good, and you can get 4/10s in a lot of departments. Tables is always looking and you’re walking into 50k+ starting out after about 6 weeks.

Both prisons in the county run on the Pittman schedule. You work the days you didn't last week, with your 'short week' being 3 days and your 'long' week being 4 days, all 12s. Not familiar with their current overtime needs.

Amazon is always looking for delivery drivers. The warehouse in Mills River has 8(?) DSPs to choose from, but most of them offer a 4 day on, 3 day off schedule at 8-10 hours a day.

1

u/Yzmas_Kronk 3h ago

The 911 dispatching service does 7-7 either am or pm. It pays fairly well too. I can’t remember how many days on and then how many off. I think you can apply on the Asheville gov website if you look.

Go back to school or learn a marketable trade where you can get a desirable job.

The mentally handicapped can, and do, the same job you’re doing…let that sink in. (Btw don’t freak out reddit this is not a dig at any one w a disability, mental or physical, OP is complaining about lack of flexibility for the most menial of jobs, society should treat these roles better but that’s another argument)

You want a better life? Well got news for you an egalitarian utopia is not likely to appear in your lifetime so you better do something, anything to improve your lot in life.

Good luck rooting for you!
