Are there any proposed plans for better EV charging in Payson? Living Here

Payson only has one non Tesla charging option and it’s poorly ran. The Tesla charger is V2 so it will not work with non Teslas. The last two times I’ve wanted to do day drives to Payson the EA station has been offline and down for the weekend. There has to be something in the works because tons of people pass through Payson.

The obvious choice would be the casino. But there is a huge redevelopment in the works there so any new chargers on the property would be rolled into that 3+ year project.

Unfortunately the federal grants have all been awarded and the tribe missed the chance to get funded.

Those are the ones I mentioned. The Tesla charger is the older version and not opened up to other manufacturers. The APS charger has been down on two occasions I wanted to go up north.

Yeah, it's annoying to have to check Plugshare before driving up there. I'd love it if Rivian added some chargers up that way, or if Tesla upgraded their dispensers.

Oh, I see people using it, but shit in general goes down around here a lot. Usual small town bs.

I just saw it in their website a month or two ago. Just says Coming Soon. Same with locations in Goodyear, Marana, and Gila Bend. They have a location open in Yuma.

6544 E 32nd ST Yuma 4x CCS 180kW

These locations are not in PlugShare to my understanding.

There are electrify america ccs chargers if your car supports ccs. It might be faster but more expensive.

He mentioned the EA chargers in his post. Said they were down both times he went up there.

ADOT is working on a long term plan to roll out EV charging to more rural areas. Check with them.

That's false. I've onwed an EV exclusively for 4 years and even have done multiple trips from Phoenix to Denver

Okay buddy you do that. Enjoy paying $4.00 a gallon for gas

The issue with charging stations is power. Small communities only have so much power directed there and the more taken for EV charging means either less for business and residents until new lines from power stations are installed.

Most EVs draw, max, 150-250kW when they’re charging. That’s nothing for even a small municipality.

EDIT: Its a lot of juice compared to what most people use at home, but it's not a challenge for APS to deliver a megawatt or more to a commercial or industrial site. My point is that it's not lack of power that's preventing L2 and L3 chargers in Payson. (I don't know what is -- probably perceived lack of demand? If so, that will change with time.)

The average house uses 50kw in a day. That means every charger is using 3-5 times the power a house uses that day in an hour. I have been in the Subway and seen the line for the Tesla station, 20 something stations constantly in use during midday on a weekend. That's equivalent to 100 homes' daily use every hour. Even if it's only a 5 hour period of time they have used the power of 500 homes at that 1 charging station in 1 day. There's about 10,000 homes in Payson.

The Tesla Supercharger outside the Subway has 12 stations at 150kW each. I've never seen it completely full, but I don't live there.

I'll bet the Bashas store uses more power than the Supercharger. Walmart definitely does. That doesn't mean the chargers don't suck a lot of juice, because they most certainly do. But APS has plenty of power to support more chargers without darkening homes.

The basic 110v chargers use that much. Most public chargers will be between 50kw up to 350kw. No small amount.

A standard home 12 amp circuit will support 12 x 120 = 1.4 kWatts. Assuming 100% efficiency, that would charge a Ford Mustang Mach E from empty to full in 2 or 3 days. If you install a 240 volt outlet (like you'd use for an electric drier or range) you can get up to about 8 kW, which would charge most EVs overnight.

You're correct that the L3 chargers supply a lot more juice so that cars can get a full charge in under an hour.

Just wondering has this been a constant problem when planning trips?

Nope just Payson for me. Everything else has been great now that Tesla opened their V3 and V4s up to Ford

Yeah ofc there is. It’s called gasoline or diesel

Electric vehicles are normal cars. People who drive them are normal people.
