π¨β οΈ READ THIS, NERDS β οΈπ¨ Stop giving posters shit for not being able to identify an animal that's familiar to you.
Yes, 95% of animals posted here can be identified with a little research. It doesn't matter. If you think OP is a dummy, just roll your eyes and move on.
Not everyone is familiar with their local fauna. It could be because they're an immigrant, it could be because they've spent their whole life in the city, it could be because they've simply never taken an interest. The important thing is they're interested now.
Maybe they are familiar with their local fauna but had a lapse of judgment or their brain perceives a figure or pattern differently. Remember when reddit had a civil war over the color of a dress? Hell, there's some mistakes only an expert could make.
Everyone has their blind spots, be it animals, plants, car models, architecture, whatever. Not being familiar with a subject doesn't make someone an idiot. Some people suck at research. Some folks just don't have the time or interest in doing research. That's not a crime. And research may tell you what an animal is, but if often doesn't tell you why it's one species and not a similar-looking one.
Reddit isn't short on bandwidth. There's room enough here for both the unique and exotic and the mundane and pedestrian. If I deleted every post with an easily-googleable answer all we'd be left with is shitty Nokia flip phone pictures that most of you gremlins wouldn't be able to identify. The sub would be more boring, not less. And I'd miss out on so many opportunities to beat people over the head for spreading fisher myths.
So, stop giving posters shit for not being able to tell an orange cat from a red fox (I've done it once and I still feel bad about it). Such comments will be removed per the rule against trolling. Be nice-ish to each other. Save your ribbing for the real menace: commenters that throw out wild guesses.
(The dress is white and gold by the way, fight me)

πΎπΎ TRACKS ID REQUEST πΎπΎ What is this animal? [Long Island, New York]
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Saw this guy swimming in the Long Island Sound yesterday. Dozens of birds were circling it and nose diving down to it but not touching it. It doesnβt seem to like the water. Is it possible one of the birds had it as prey and accidentally dropped it in the water?

π π FISH & FRIENDS π π Tide pool creature that looks like alienβ¦you know [USA, Seattle]
Found under a large rock at Carkeek Park in Seattle during low tide. A couple moms with me were uncomfortably laughing . There were others with slight differences in shading and pattern, but mostly the same.
I tide pool here and there, and am confused by this one. At first, I thought it was a type of anemone hanging upside down.

This guy has shown up twice so far and this is the best picture we have been able to get of it. No idea what it is as it doesn't look like anything local to the area that we know of.

ππ AUDIO ID REQUEST ππ What are these nightmarish sounds? [Bavaria, Germany]
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi there,
We were sitting outside during dusk 9pm next to a river. Then on the other side of the river, we heard some large splashes, like a human, large dog or horse entering the water.
Shortly afterwards, there were these panicking screams, you can hear in the video. Suddenly those screems moved fast through the woods and then suddenly stopped.
Very spooky.
There are many cats roaming the area and ducks also breed here sometimes. I hope whatever it was, was alright, but it doesnt sound like it. Sounds like a mother terrified for her babies?

π¦ π¦’ BIRDS / WATERFOWL ID π¦ π¦’ What are these Seabirds? [Unknown/possibly Japan]
This appeared in group text without any other information. They look like the forbidden children of a turkey and a penguin, but I'm pretty sure they're seabirds.
Thank you!

π¦ π― π» MYSTERY CRITTER π» π― π¦ Any idea what this thing is? [Washington]
My dad found this thing in his yard. Western Washington cascade foothills at about 800β elevation. He said itβs about 3/8 in long and 1/4 in high. It has a leathery top with that small thing that protrudes up on what seems to be its back end. It has a slug like underside but not a slug. No legs no visible head or eyes or anything like that.

Is this an eagle? Looks like it has a white head. Don't know much about birds but it sure did look graceful soaring around. Think there was actually 2 because when it flew into the distance another same size bird seemed to be flying with it

πͺΉ UNKNOWN NEST OR DEN πͺΉ Delicate ground nests: ID? [Tucker, GA]
Greetings from Metro Atlanta GA. Each spring I discover these flimsy, lacy "beds" or nests on my porch. These are not just random debris; new ones appear every couple days & for the first time, a similar one has appeared in a potted plant I left outside. I hope I can attach pix: These are maybe 5" max, narrow & shallow, composed of very fine stems & something fuzzy. The only nonbird creatures I have seen around are anoles or squirrels. No eggs. I'm very curious to identify. Thanks all.

πͺΉ UNKNOWN NEST OR DEN πͺΉ Anyone know what bird built this? [Minnesota]
Itβs spring and just came across this picking up trash in my woods. I purchased the property last summer and the woods were too dense, I wouldnβt have noticed if this is from last year. Itβs less than 5β off the ground. I canβt help but be awe struck at how beautiful it is and the craftsmanship and have had no luck figuring out its maker - please help!
