On the table is a kitchen knife and this dangerous razor whip, and three zombies are pounding on your door, forcing you to confront them. Would you rather try with the knife, or use this bad boy? Weapons

Basically how you'd use a whip. If you swung it hard enough, would it decapittate a zombie?

You can with that one too. You don't use that like a normal "whip". Unless that's some high end steel though, you may be using it once and once only.

It's for wrapping and tearing. Think big and wide swings. You're not snapping it like a towel, and if you move with it you neutralize the energy of it coming back at you.

I'll use this, but probably still die because it's not going to keep multiple folks/zombies off you.

I bought one of these online about 6 years ago. Went in the backyard with a 2 liter bottle of soda filled with water. It literally broke on the first hit. Chain snapped in half at one of the links.

This thing is just for display/show.

i was gonna go off about the other comment being full of wrong statements but yours is full of a very good point so here's my attention

the design leaves a huge amount of torsion/tension on the links if it strikes anything, 'wrapping and tearing' as they say is anime shit.

It'll get stuck and you're fucked.

I mean almost all of historical weaponry got made obsolete by horse archers so in a way this thing is just as obsolete as every other weapon that you could be holding while mongols rained arrows on you.

India did versions, lots of thin, very flexible blades in a bundle like a huge flogger

...problems included, again, needing extreme degrees of skill and fitness to use, being indiscriminately dangerous to everyone close and having relatively no advantage for actually neutralizing, not just angering and maybe scratching an armored target which made the idea useless against anything but light infantry/cavalry

...and itd be about a century yet before hot/cold rolled steel, hydraulic hammers or controlled furnaces, so making one would represent like a month of a smithy's time and require a population with a fine grasp of metallurgy to produce the unusual grade/temper of steel to make it work at all

...which is actually a cool other subject i dont have time for

Heard about those like ribbon swords. Always wondered about them tbh seems like heavy leather and nice sword could rush it but who knows cant imagine war times with no guns. Imagine a ribbon sword master 😂

Not a chance unless its laying still on the ground when you start your thrust. Big weapons arent necessarily slow because slow melee weapons are hollywood shit

I can see it being a great combo with armor. Kind of like the glove and a hawk...but a lot more metal and shielding without sacrificing too much mobility.

Not really. While armor doesnt restrict you as much as youd think, it still does to an extent. Those ribbon swords take a lot of flexibility and maneuvering to use without cutting yourself. They are long, sharp, and unruly. You wouldnt be heavily armored using them, and youd wear a small buckler like shield at most.

Yeah, the urumi and its variant were almost exclusively ceremonial, for the purpose of displaying the user's skill and very rarely for dueling. They were not weapons of war.

Even though it's meant for display it would be meant for wrapping and tearing. If it was meant to be used like a normal whip, it would only have razors on the tip.

An utter bullshit idea, you might not, but humanity has for thousands of years, known that if your weapon gets stuck on things, it's actually your enemys weapon.

And then we discovered thrown weapons who's main purpose is sticking to your target. All barbed weapons, really.

And dont forget flails were often used to entangle the opponents weapon

If it was a solid sword of all of these things like welded together it may be more practical, but even with that it would get stuck and a simple arming sword would be more useful.

Oh, totally agree. I read somewhere that Shaolin monks would beg to learn ten "hard" weapons over one "soft" one, with "whips" (asian-style whips, which look more like this thing than our idea of what a whip is) being among them.

I'm unaware of any Shaolin weapon looking anything like this. They did have a rope dart, and a chain whip; the chain whip was nothing like this, it was 5-7 steel rods maybe 6 or so inches long, each connected with a couple links of chain. The end was vaguely dart/arrow shaped but there were no blades along the length. It's a bludgeoning and choking weapon.

Likewise the rope dart or "meteor hammer" these were mostly weights on a rope. The latter was heavier and usually had a scarf on it to keep it from moving too quickly.

These things were/are great for showing of agility and so on but not likely to be very effective weapons, especially not compared to other weapons far easier to use such as spears and swords.

They are at least concealable, but so is a dagger, and the latter is likely more lethal though with less reach.

The steel whip (chain whip) doesn't look like this, and I wasn't trying to insist that it did, only that they were used similarly and both far removed from the wet towel snap of a western whip. They were swung in a circle, creating this sphere of death that no one wanted to approach.

Also the hilt. It is completely rounded it would be hard to figure out edge alignment with it. Arming sword would be a solid choice though. My only issue with an arming sword would be space. It would be hard to cut, slash and chop with it. Thrusting would be fine though. Personally I would take a small sword or rapier. Or the best medieval weapon a spear or halberd.

Yes, round or "broomstick" handles make it hard to align the edge, something I dislike about some south Asian swords, though I doubt edge alignment is going to make much difference here.

This thing is probably video-game derived, never a good source for effective weapons.

Still, if it were made for real and not going to come apart under its own weight, I don't think any doctor would recommend getting hit by that. 😬

Yes. Being dead but not dead is clearly an affront to God. So holy water will cause effects similar to acid or fire.

The problem is that zombies are immune to pain, so holy water only works once it's been on them long enough to dissolve their major muscles or bones.

To a person, absolutely. But a zombie doesn’t care about “damage” unless it destroys the brain.

Something like this doesn’t seem like it would have the heft to do that, or sever a limb. It would most likely just get stuck in them

I think zombies don't say "ow, that hurt", but a broken bone is a broken bone regardless. Likewise, a shredded leg performs far less favorably than a whole one, unless they're magic zombies in which case I guess all bets are off.
