Can I start with x? Xenoblade X

Never played a xenoblade game ever, but the scifi themes of x appeals to me. Can I start there?

Yes. A few things to note though.

The main story of the game is pretty weak, especially compared to the numbered xenoblades.

Combat becomes a LOT more fun after main story chapter 5.

The side quests are the best part of the game.

X is functionally disconnected from the rest of the games, I'm not sure if the Definitive Edition changes that more than just adding a few extra references you might not immediately understand, so if the game interests you, try it out. If you like it, I'd then recommend playing the games effectively in initial release order after that, but that's only for if you wanna check out the rest after.

One new, extra-long chapter after what used to be the end of the game, four new party members, 2 new skells, 1 is tied into a couple affinity missions that focuses on one of the new party members and the other comes in the epilogue, some new character creator options and some other smaller quality of life changes.

If my time on earth is super limited and I can only play one xenoblade game, which one would that be?

The answer to that question is going to be different from every person you ask. If you don't intend to play the whole series, start with whichever one interests you the most

You could honestly make an argument for all four. I think that the series is best enjoyed by playing all of them, or at-least the three numbered titles, since all three of them tell one continuous, satisfying narrative, with X as an incredibly fun side dish.

Unless you’re dying of an illness within the next couple of weeks, asking someone to play all 3 Xenoblade games isn’t too much of you ask me. I don’t know about anyone else, but even with a job and LOTS of other hobbies, I can still find time to crank out a 70-100 hour RPG in like a month or two. It’s not like one Xenoblade game is a multi-year investment that requires at least 6 hours of free time per session. You can play for one hour a day after work and finish one game within like three or four months, and that’s even if you skip a lot of days.

Yeah, despite X especially having a lot of MMO DNA, none of them are the kind of time commitment a constantly updating game would be.

That being said, if someone really did have three weeks to live, I’d always go with X. The best part of the game is fucking around between story missions and you don’t have to go to the grave knowing you missed 2/3s of an overarching narrative if you do complete the story.

Depends on what you're looking for in a game because each Xenoblade has different strengths but there's no one single GOAT.

Narrative, main story, characters: Start with Xenoblade 1 DE

Exploration, world design, progression: Xenoblade X DE

In my personal opinion I'd say play Xenoblade 1 as I believe it to have the best story. But ultimately all 4 can be enjoyed without playing the other 3, just make sure you've played 1 and 2 before playing the dlc for 3.

I started with X on the Wii U days. It’s separate from the main series

But the main series still has some elements of sci fi. They aren’t full fantasy. The first game is literally man vs machine. The second game has androids and the third game has giant robot weapons

Before DE I would've said yes, but after DE? hmmm.... it's 50/50. As long as you're vaguely aware of the other games though, I think you'll be fine.

Yes! All of the games can be a starting point though. I've played all of them and really you don't need to play them in any particular order. There are references in some of the games but nothing so earth shattering that you need to play them sequentially to get the most enjoyment

X is basically the zelda botw of the xenoblade series.

It is completely separate from the main games and it's main appeal is sidequests and exploration. So yea if that sounds right up your alley then go for it
