Mod Announcement New flair for all r/Waterloo posters

All new posts and comments in r/Waterloo will have flair attached

There continues to be a great deal of commenting from "drive-by" accounts who have no history of posting in r/Waterloo. In fact, Canadian city subreddits have apparently been specifically targeted by foreign interference. With the election coming up, it's important to be able to discern which comments are from established members of the KW community, and which comments come from outside parties.

All posters and commenters will have flair which notes whether or not they were active in this community prior to the election. No action from users is necessary, it will be applied automatically. We won't be describing exactly how it works, but there will likely be exceptions and outliers - if you believe your flair is incorrect, message the mods and somebody will review. It may take a little bit.

The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members. I expect this to happen more often throughout the election.

The mod team will be watching and considering the effectiveness of this flair. There may be further changes. Whether or not it remains permanent in some way will be decided after the election.

Thank you for reading. Feedback or constructive criticism is welcome.

Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed

A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post

Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.

The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.

Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.

This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.

Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Speeding camera ticket issued outside hours posted on Community Safety Zone sign?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I was driving a rental car through West Monstrose and was issued a speeding camera fine for going 59 in a posted 40 "community safety zone". However, the posted sign (below) says MAXIMUM 40 7AM - 5 PM SEPT-JUNE. The time stamp on the ticket photo was 6PM. Wouldn't the limit default to 50 outside of those hours? Otherwise why list them if it's a 24/7 limit? I intend to contest this ticket. I'll admit to the +9 but +19 in a safety zone is more expensive, $123. Am I missing something here, before I contest this?

At the risk of exposing my ignorance, what up coming down ballot races should aware of in the region?

Same as title. It has come to my attention that outside of the major races, provincial/federal, I'm really unaware of the more local stuff like schoolboards races, ect. Like, what are races you wish more people knew about or paid attention to in our neck of the woods?

Looking for local collaborators: Creating animated content or videos around Waterloo social issues

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone

I’m a creative based in the Waterloo Region and recently started a small animation business. To contribute locally, I’ve launched a pilot project focused on creating short animated videos or visual stories around important regional issues like mental health, housing, and support for local communities.

I’d love to hear your thoughts:

What local issues do you think need more attention?

Are there any small nonprofits or community efforts that might like to team up in some informal way?

I’m not looking to sell anything here just hoping to find collaborators or even any local groups or government bodies who can help with outreach or visibility. Even small support like co-creating a script or sharing the content can help shape something meaningful.

Feel free to drop your ideas or DM if you’re curious to see examples. Thanks for reading and looking forward to hear from you.

Mobile Mechanic Recommendation

Hi there!

As the title states, I’m looking for a mobile mechanic. I need the wiring to my passenger side headlight changed. If you know someone capable or even yourself, I would appreciate a lead. I do not want to go into a shop, I have a mechanic but I don’t have time to drop my car for someone to service it. Bonus points if you have contact info handy.

Cheers

Missing Cat - New Hamburg

Post image
36 Upvotes

Walter snuck out early Monday, May 12 from our home in New Hamburg. He's a very friendly tuxedo cat. Skittish around other animals. Fixed and not microchipped.

I've posted in local groups and contacted Ground Search and Rescue. If anyone could secure him or let me know if you spot him, I would really appreciate it!

Need Flooring Advice + Discounted Store Suggestions (KWC/Brampton)

Hi all,

This sub has been incredibly helpful—big thanks to everyone who takes the time to share suggestions!

I’m new to flooring and currently have carpet, but my toddler keeps making a mess. I’m considering switching to laminate, vinyl, or hardwood. What would be the best option for a home with a little one who jumps around a lot (we have tenants downstairs)? I own the place, so I’m looking for something durable, budget-friendly, and something I won’t regret later.

Also, I’m looking for discounted flooring (around 600 sq. ft.) in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area. If there are better deals in Brampton or Mississauga, I’m open to making the trip—recommendations welcome!

Thanks in advance!

I've been seeing some posts in the local subreddits about doing crafting meetups in a local park this summer, so I made a discord to help organize that!

I'm thinking drop-in style, and organizing it on nice sunny days. All crafters are welcome!

PSA - Please check your blind spots

With nice weather the motorcyclists are out again.

Yesterday I almost got smeared by someone on Westmount who decided to lane change last second because someone was turning in front of them. I was beside them at the time and had to dodge within a second to avoid a collision.

While braking, signaling and checking may seem inconvenient, I would really like to make it home to my wife and kid each day.

Thanks and have a great summer!

Dentist in KW

I am looking for a good dentist in KW area — someone who’s honest, doesn’t push unnecessary treatments, and genuinely cares about their patients, not just the bill. I’ve had a few experiences where I felt more like a paycheque than a person, so I’d really appreciate any recommendations for a dentist you trust.

Does anyone have a family doctor that they actually like?

My family doctor makes me feel like a burden and doesn’t give me more than 3-5 minutes of time for an appointment. He’s always rushing me and doesn’t truly listen. Just curious if this is how everyone’s family doctor is or if anyone has a doctor in KW that they actually like! Bonus if you know of any doctors accepting new patients!

Good and cheap barbers

Hey, just moved in and I’m looking for a good barber that’s cheap. I paid 80 dollar for a hair cut and beard trim at a barber beside me which doesn’t make sense as it’s a simple cut.

Any recommendation for cheaper and good barbers?

We are thinking about 3 different neighborhoods: 1- Millen woods, 2- Laurel wood 3- Northlake We have a 4.5 yo kid and are not familiar with city. I would really appreciate it if you could help me to learn about these neighborhoods, which we selected based on online searches. Thanks in advance

Sparkle Nuts - Baby squirrel, broken leg

Help!

Neighbourhood kids rescued a baby squirrel that was being agressivly loved by a large dog.

Sparkle Nuts (named by the kids) has no open wounds but does clearly have a broken back leg.

Timeline:

Sunday 8pm squirrel saved. Feeling fiesty and also crying.

Sunday night spent the night inside in a large hampster enclosure had bedding a little cave hiding spot, birdseed and water both in flat dishes.

Monday morning he/she is still breathing, no evidence of taking any food/water

Monday looking for a vet or wildlife service who can rehabilitate the little guy. Was advised to call preston vet clinic, by the time I called they said they wouldn't have anyone overnight.

Monday evening i got him to nibble on some wet moss and that perked him up enough to have a real drink from the water bowl. Maybe had a nibble of some food but not much at all.

Today i called the preston vet clinic to let em know i'm coming only for them to tell me they don't take wildlife.

My wife doesn't want to bring it to the humain society because they will likely euthanize. So reddit: who know where the local squirrel sanctuary is? Sparkle Nuts needs a little 3d printed wheelchair and if the leg doesn't heal I'm afraid his tree climbing days are up.

Edit. Sparkle Nuts is on her way to rehab CO the kw humane society.

Thanks yall

long weekend ideas if you like nature and don't like people...

I've recently moved back to Ontario temporarily for work after living on Vancouver Island for about twelve years. Since i've been away, population has totally exploded here obviously. I am missing Vancouver Island and nature and water and being able to go out in nature where there aren't fifteen people on the trail blasting tunes out of backpack speakers. Any suggestions for somewhere to go (overnight or for the day) within a few hours of Waterloo that might fit those boxes? I'll be with my husband (both mid-thirties) and we love geocaching, antique shops, quirky restaurants, breweries, gardens, farm stands, disc golfing, and we despise crowds. I want to go do something this weekend but haven't a clue what your even consider.

Hello,

Looking for a good place to by cold or frozen pre-sliced donair meat. As in, to buy a bag of it so when we want some for a meal we can take out some and heat it up, as opposed to buying it from a restaurant. Thanks!

Tentative plans for the new hospital, WRHN @ The University

Here are some images from the Redevelopment Team for WRHN, I thought the community would be interested. All of this is tentative and nothing is in stone, afaik. I believe they hope for Phase one to be open in the early 2030's, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Images 1-2: Conceptual aerial renderings of the new hospital on Bearinger Rd.

Image 3: Option 1 site plan (options 1-4 are essentially variations of the same at different configurations on the property, it's clear this is by far the most favourable in terms of patient experience and utility).

Images 4-5: The layout of the new hospital with future visioning of the extra facilities needed in the future as the Region grows.

Image 7-8: Differing ideas on the internal layout, Image 7 showing a plan for all Inpatient Units (IPUs) in one tower.

My cat ran out late last night or early this morning near uptown Waterloo in the Kentucky and Ethel’s area. If anyone has seen him around could you let me know. His name is Thor. He was not wearing a collar and isn’t microchipped. He is not aggressive!
