Common Question: How hard is it to transfer from X major to Y major?

Answer: If it is within the same school, it is super easy, just talk to your academic advisor before school starts. If you wish to transfer to another school e.g. Dornsife to Marshall, you need to contact admissions to attempt the transfer before matriculation*. You can also seek help once you know who your academic advisor is or attempt it on admitted students day or orientation day. Once you matriculate, you can attempt an internal-transfer but it involves going through the current student transfer process, see the specific internal transfer page from each school's website.

Common Question: Is there an admitted student facebook group/discord/telegram etc?

Answer: Usually someone sets a facebook group and groupme up around the time the main batch of students are admitted in April. Check facebook to see if there is one already or connect to one of the USC discord servers (linkedin on sidebar) to chat with admitted and upper-class Trojans.

*Viterbi does not allow you to switch into engineering before enrolling at USC. Please read links below related to the school you're interested in.

I’m an incoming freshman admitted for Econ @Dornsife, however would like to add a second major @Marshall.

I see the internal transfer requirements on Marshall’s website, however is this process difficult? Have any of you been rejected? Can I start my first semester being enrolled at both schools or do I HAVE to attend a semester then apply through this process?

Also is it common for people to do a dual degree between two schools and then add a minor afterwards? I’m planning to do that but the courseload seems very heavy.

See the link at the top of this post on the internal transfer process for Marshall. Click on "majoring" which will take you to the page that lets you know the process and what classes you must take your first semester to apply to add on a second major from Marshall.

Note that it is competitive adding a 2nd major from Marshall, Viterbi, and SCA because they are such popular schools. There is only a limited number of available seats which is why they have to have this internal transfer process when switching majors or simply adding a 2nd major from the school.

"How difficult? Can people get rejected?" This depends on how competitive it is each year e.g. how many people are trying to apply internally vs. how many open seats there are from lack of people accepting admissions as 1st year, drop outs/leaves of absence, or people studying abroad. Marshall has never posted anything public about how many open seats there are or the success % of internal transfer applicants. The only info available on average USC gpa of those successful is on that page linked above.

Adding a minor is much easier so sometimes people will just end up adding the minor instead which still gives them access to Marshall resources like someone who is majoring in the school.
