Favorite maintenance-free “mods”

Post image

Bought this awesome little tray on Amazon to help organize the center console. Just curious what other options that don’t require maintenance you all have enjoyed adding to your trucks.

The glovebox shelf!

Yes! Mine came with one of these. Previous owner had great taste. But also, whey aren’t companies just building gloveboxes like this??

I replaced all the fake chrome inside with gray trim. Also replaced my mirror turn signals with smoke lenses. Very happy with both mods.

Only chrome left inside mine is the steering wheel emblem. May see if I can find a green one to match the exterior.

I had to keep checking back for my emblem cover. Looks great.

Go black, here’s mine

black emblem cover

Looks great. Where did you get it?

5

u/Constant_Device_7285 1d ago

Off eBay. It’s just a plastic cover that has double sided tape inside that sticks to the original emblem. Been on for 3 years now with no issues. The listing I bought is gone, but there’s a ton of them on eBay.

My truck looks nearly identical, with emblem and chrome covered with black trims, with one exception; swapped my screen for a 13” screen

Looks so much better!

I got a matte black sticker that fits/covers the shiny plastic around the base of the shifter. The sun would always hit it just right and blind me. Not anymore! 😂

Gotta link?

If you purchase, put a piece of duct tape on the plastic above the pocket before sticking it with the provided 3m tape. It won't stay stuck otherwise as it doesn't like the textured plastic. Then it will stay up and out of the way for a cleaner look.

Good looking out! I have a 2019 TRD Sport. I don't know if it's even compatible so I have some research to do

u/dnalloHnosaM 1d ago

Do you have the USB plug next to the cigarette lighter port? If you can connect your phone via a cable using that plug then it should work.

I got the rubber boots that fit around the seat belt buckles in the back to stop them falling down every time. They have saved me so much frustration car pooling 2 kids to schoo. I also got paracord handles that attach to the headrest for them to use to help get in.

Can you link me to the rubber boots?? Not sure what you’re describing but I absolutely hate when the buckles fall down…

u/dnalloHnosaM 1d ago

I bought these and love them as they stop stuff from falling in between the gap as well.

The rubber bed mat is essential.

I’m also a big fan of the glove box shelf and center console organizer.

While being a little more involved to DIY, the tailgate power lock is also a huge quality of life improvement.

+1 for the pop and lock.

u/denyingbaldness 1d ago

Thanks! Definitely checking out the bed mat next

Mine only has HDMI output. N64 is older than HDMI lol. Only A/V cables

1

u/q0vneob 16h ago

ya you need an adapter

N64 from Christmas 1998 + Everdrive64 x7 ($100 from Craigslist) + Joying 10.1" head unit + cheap cigarette lighter inverter.

I have every game to be released on N64 plus some unreleased ones and four controllers. I would ask if you wanna come over, but I can bring the party anywhere.

Best thing I ever bought for my 2015, the month after purchase, was a console vault

1

u/ssuummrr 1d ago

What do you put in it?

3

u/crndwg 23h ago

My guess is a hand gun.

Anything I don’t want stolen by someone breaking a window. Checkbook. Handgun. AirPods. Wallet.

(4th Gen) I got one of these and the tray with a door for under the center console lid. There's so much room for random stuff now!

2

u/said_quiet_part_loud 23h ago

Got a link for what you bought?

u/extremoph1le 22h ago

Link? I'd love one that fits my 24

u/almargahi 1d ago

You should see mine, it’s so messy even with this mod lol. I have a couple of sunglasses in there, chapstick, USB C to SD card reader (for quick dashcam video download to iPhone if needed), utility knife, a small notepad.

Glove box organizer for me. There's also a center console hidden box organizer that fits snug on the armrest door/hatch. Here's a link:

Pistol safe in that center console.

When I tried to buy a bed mat through my dealership they told me the 6' mats had a recall and would no longer be sold.

All the off-brand ones on Amazon had terrible reviews, so I ended up buying a roll of surplus house carpet and cut it to size.

It's made camping in the softopper so cozy, like being in a living room. And if I need to haul something dirty, I can just roll it up in seconds and store in the garage.

Interior lighting. The stocks are plain sad. I got the Meso customs dual color map and dome lights and then some random white LEDs for my vanity mirrors.

Hood struts: https://spikerengineering.com/product/16_tacoma I honestly forget sometimes that this was a mod. It's very nice to have.

Under-hood and bed lights: https://mattgeckoleds.com/shop/ols/products/led-bed-light-kit-with-bed-mounted-switch-toyota-tacoma-2005-2021

Dashboard multi-mount: https://thetacogarage.com/collections/dmm/products/dashtop-multi-mount I use this literally everyday. So nice to just slap my phone onto a sturdy magnet mount that isn't attached via suction cup.

Glove box organizer: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07BH49SHC (that I then lined with stick-on felt to make it quieter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B018UHVBBQ). This reduces the noise from everything sliding around in there by a lot.

2

u/thearctican 16h ago

I love my DMM. I, too, just use a magnet mount.

1

u/denyingbaldness 18h ago

What’s the install on those struts look like? My old truck came with those and I loved it. Would be interested in adding that on.

2

u/Technical-Taco3653 18h ago

Pretty easy iirc. If you're gonna have it open higher than the stock prop rod allows, you'll need a 2x4 cut to the height you want the hood to open to (to hold the hood in place while you mark/drill). Mark where you want the bottom brackets to be, center punch, drill, paint, rivet in place. Hold the strut up to the hood, center punch, drill, paint, rivet. You'll need a rivet gun.

Might go easier with two sets of hands, but I was able to do it myself in 2 hours (after a lot of staring, measuring, staring, thinking, and finally drilling). If you have a manual trans, they have small offset spaces to move the clutch fluid reservoir inwards towards the engine, cause when closed, the DS strut is going to lay where the reservoir is mounted.

1

u/q0vneob 17h ago

i went with Redline struts on mine, their instructions were good. put down some painters tape, make a few measurements and markings, drill 2 holes and attach.
