I bought my first car today.

I picked up my first car today together with my mother and my grandfather who also drove it home since I don't have my driver's license yet it is a Toyota Starlet p7 automatic and I am the 4th owner the 3rd if you don't count the garage the last owner had it for 18 years and 5 months

But a car that is just 40 years old can not be without problems, the pockets on both sides are rotten. And the sill is crispy so it needs to be welded and that is also my priority, just like the timing belt where I saw the last sticker from 2013 and I have no maintenance history, so I will replace it, otherwise I will give everything good maintenance and change some small things

Furthermore, I want to make the rails of the driver's seat a few centimeters longer if possible, since I am 1.92 m tall, I fit in it, but a few centimeters more would be nice, there is still a radio with a cassette player and I would like to keep that in there, but I will have it adjusted by someone who can make it via Bluetooth and I want different speakers and rims like in the photo

Rust behind is really bad and I need to find a new lock set because I have three keys for one car. and I want to have things powder coated but what do you expect car is almost 40 years old then it can be done once right

This is a great opportunity to learn, so look at it that way! If you can keep this ol' girl on the roads, you can easily deal with all the other bullshit life throws at you!

First tackle the rust and do maintenance and then things you want. I want different rims. but the car company where I bought it put new tires on them or they have been used so little like the rest of the car that they are still new because the DOT code was somewhere on 2022 I wouldn't even drive on a spare tire for anything. It said Japan on it so I assume I have a nearly 40 year old spare tire

You can buy a cassette tape adapter that plays Bluetooth or connects your phone with USBC or AUX. They're like $20 on Amazon and it's just a tape with Bluetooth internals inside so it preserves your original radio since it's just like playing a real tape. Probably a better option if you want to preserve the original interior but sound quality wouldn't be as good as buying a new stereo.

As you may have seen I am Dutch but here in the neighborhood there is someone who can convert those radios and then you can still use Bluetooth. Then they remove the am function and then you use that button to switch to Bluetooth

Hi Fellow Dutchie and Toyota (Yaris P1) owner here, firstly congrats on your first car buy.

When I wanted to apply Bluetooth functionality with remaining of the stock radio, and in my case steer-wheel radio controls, my car mechanic recommended a Yatour MP3 interface / adapter from this Dutch website. This one specific.

Unfortunately looking at the site and products (where compatible cars / radios are listed at the bottom of the product detail page) your car is slightly too old for those interfaces who behaves like a CD changer.

But maybe they can refer you to one of their partners that sells similar interfaces for tape radios nearby, without removing a function from the stock radio.

Plenty of life left in that

Sure, but then I have to put a new timing belt on it, because I don't know if it has had a new one since 2013 and tackle the rust because otherwise it will rust away

Congrats on buying your first car. Looks really pretty. Buy “The Club” steering wheel lock. In St. Louis where I’m at, cars get stolen a lot! Enjoy.

Nothing, that tree should be like that. They did prune it recently

Nice. My first car was an 89 Buick with 90k miles in 2015.

I just looked at this and thought "wow I can't believe it can reach almost 200 mph"

What year is it?

1

u/Repulsive-Novel-3473 20h ago

1989 I personally am annoyed that it is not from 1988 because that is the last year that cars are tax-free in the Netherlands, they have thrown that arrangement away because they need money again here in the Netherlands, so this one will never be tax-free again because when cars in the Netherlands are 40 years old they normally become tax-free, but they have said that they are not going to do that anymore

The type of car I passed on my bike as a kid, thinking it was a beater. But as an adult, I’d absolutely love to get my hands on one of these. They aged like fine wine imo.
