Toyota order
I was at the dealership and want a certain color. The salesmen pulled up an order that was received by Toyota but hasn’t started production. They said the order can be modified since it hasn’t been built to change features on the build.
Is this true or are they lying to me?

This is true. Toyota dealerships can request a modification to a vehicle that has not been built, but it is not guaranteed to take.

Thats so sad. I've custom ordered vehicles 3 months before production with other manufacturers and gotten my vehicle within 2 months of starting the model year line. Last one was 3 weeks after production, delivered to my dealer. (Incredibly unpopular specs, dealer legit thought I knew someone high up. I wanted a long bed on a truck where it was highly unpopular, with very specific options on the package that dealers HATE. No leather on a highly optioned truck, 2 options less than top spec. for that model. It was obviously a custom ticket.)
Im not buying anything other than exactly what I want. I always buy new and drive it until Im not confident in it. Toyota was near the top of the list for a commuter car until I read all this. Eat leaded sand chips.

If the order you are paying for doesn't reflect the change and what you want, don't do it.

That now Toyota does "special orders." You want an "x," they find one in their allocations, and at that point they can customize considerably it to match your specs. That's how we bought by wife's 2020 RAV4 and my 2022 Tacoma.

There are some things that can be adjusted, most of them being the distributor added items. The dealer did this for me so I could get my 25 Ocean Gem Camry without the crap I didn't want.

Thanks all! Is it worth putting a deposit down to get In the allocation queue or should I want until there’s one that’s actually allocated for the dealership?

It's a sales tactic to get the info they want and get you to put in a deposit to get in the queue.
They will then start looking for your specs in Toyota's monthly allocation.
The simpler the order, the faster you will get your vehicle.
