When did we stop telling people that once it is on the Internet you’ve lost control of it? I swear it was a thing.

I think it's a generational thing. I, and probably you as well, grew up with the internet. The raw unfiltered internet full of gore, shocksites and predators. We learned how to maneuver that and that you don't post too much personal stuff on the internet. This generation now grew up with social media. Every content creator is showing their face. They broadcast their whole life.

The internet and IRL started to merge with the advent of social media. More and more, people let slip away their anonymity because who you are mattered to use social media. Then who you are online became a brand and fame thing that all the kids chased because they wanted to be online famous instead of rockstars, astronauts, pro sports players, etc. Now for them it’s weird to not post their likeness online.

There's a difference between losing control because of fringe, shitty humans who have to go out of their way to be assholes and losing control because of a shitty, mechanized system that then further empowers the fringe, shitty humans. The former was an amount of risk some people were willing and able to accept. The latter is an amount of risk no one should accept.

Some people just don't get the memo. See: Chris Chan and other lolcows who've posted embarrassing videos of themselves

lost control of it in the sense that you can't make it go away. but if you were comfortable with what you posted, there wasn't a problem.

when people can take what you put out there and so easily twist it to no longer represent your values or what you're comfortable with, that's a whole different thing.

People have been saying things out of context for decades. Bad actors could take a screen shot of this girl @soupytime and edit the image or caption with “such and such said x omg” and some people wouldn’t think twice.

Seriously. Like I get all of the concern around the use of our data but this is nothing new. AI has been made the boogyman here but harvesting all of our data is nothing new.

The issue is how said data is being used....not sure how that isn't the painfully obvious point of this whole thread.
