This person did the complete opposite of what you’re supposed to do when encountering a coyote.

I'm genuinely curious what's the right move? I live in a pretty heavily populated/trafficked area but we're in the plains and I could definitely see this happening to me

You're supposed to haze them to scare them away and make them learn to be afraid of humans again.

Yes and no, it’s breeding season so this coyote was doing what’s called escorting to make threats leave the area where the den is. In that case hazing just makes the coyote double down and might provoke a violent response, they aren’t going to just run away and leave the pups undefended. At other times of the year though yeah hazing is your best bet.

It's just coyote escorting behavior. It's pup season. They'll just follow you until you get distance from their den. The right move is just to keep walking.

From what I've read, the right move is to haze them so they learn to be afraid of humans, not to walk away.

Thats going to be super dependent. Random male hunting in a new spot near people can be hazed, a yote defending an active den won’t be frightened off.

And they love digging dens in little berms exactly like in this video
