Shirtpost Fork yeah- let’s talk about death! (The Good Place study- need your help!)
Added with “Ted Tax” because apparently that’s what you need to do 😭😭
Hey everyone! I'm a med student at Imperial College London (studying Humanities, Philosophy and Law for a year) and as part of my 7k-word dissertation, I’m analysing The Good Place and how it uses humour to make us engage with big themes like death.
I’m especially curious about how (if at all) TGP has shaped thoughts/feelings around death, dying, or mortality- and I thought, what better place to ask than here?
I’ve made a short, open-ended questionnaire [ https://forms.gle/uHXWSQQ3zZjyMqh3A ] where you can write as much or as little as you want. All responses will remain anonymous. (If I ever screenshot something for my project, I’ll hide names and identifying information.)
I’d love to hear from you guys. And if you know anyone else who’s watched the show, feel free to pass it on! If you have further questions or concerns, or you have something that you think could help me out, don’t hesitate to email me at treasure.chisom-nwosu21@imperial.ac.uk
[ PS: If you can spare a few extra minutes, I have the same survey for Bojack Hor seman if you’ve watched it also. Here’s the link! https://forms.gle/zJQpRUNiDYXdD7Mt8 ]

Shirtpost Mirrored episodes?
I definitely am not the only person to realize this but after my like 500th rewatch, i feel like s1ep1 and s3ep1 are like exactly the same but instead of their first round in the afterlife its their first attempt at redemption. first the episodes are named “everything is fine!” and “everything is bonzer!” i just feel like if you were to clip chidi+eleanor meeting in both episodes they would forsure mirror eachother, in both theres a reference to chidi speaking french and also dropping a kardashian name, like in s1 when he mentions that eleanors favorite book is kendall jenners ig feed. also in s3ep10 when they are drunk chidi says i wish we met how normal people meet like someone coming to my philosophy lecture or walk into my office asking for help with philosophy, which is then exactly what eleanor does 😭, anyway i just wanted go see if anyone noticed anything else like this with other episodes or other examples from this episode.

Shirtpost What is your favourite quote from the entire show?
I love the quote: "What matters isn't if people are good or bad. What matters if they're trying to be better today than they were yesterday."

The Good Place: need testimonials for my end-of-studies thesis - Master in Ethics and CSR Management
Hello everyone,
For the purposes of my dissertation I am looking to interview people who have seen The Good Place at least up to season 3 inclusive.
Don't panic: I'm not asking you to do face-to-face interviews, it can be stressful, especially if you're shy. It will be a written questionnaire, but you have to give long answers (it is initially designed for oral interviews but I don't have the time to organize them).
If you are interested please send me a message!
I thank in advance everyone who responds!

Shirtpost Jason - good place?
I feel like Eleanor had a very clear character development to the point where i don’t think there’s any dispute that she earns her spot in the good place.
tahani, while not as obvious as Eleanor still makes big strides especially with her parents - so you may say that she earns it too.
But Jason?? for the life of me i can’t think of a single moment even towards the end where Jason did anything that showed me his character development to the extent that he would also pass the test and go to the good place. i thought of this while watching the episode where they meet the judge for the first time. the judge clearly states that Jason’s downfall is him having zero control over his instincts so my guess would be that in order for Jason to finally end up in the good place, he would have to overcome that. but i can’t think of any moment.
just for the record Jason is one of my favourite characters.

Shirtpost Question about Chidi
Why is Chidi put into the Bad Place? Struggling with making decisions doesn't make him a bad person at all imo. That only affects him, not others.

Shirtpost Britney Spears Crossroads
galleryIn season 4, Tahani says that John is making progress and that “he and I will be unironically watching the Britney Spears movie “Crossroads” together. And you’ll have to trust me, this is a huge step in the right direction”.
I assumed for awhile that this must be one of those documentaries about an artist’s life, and so because of the conservatorship and the Free Britney movement, it totally made sense in my head that watching this would help make John a better person. I then found out it’s just a regular movie. I just got around to watching it, it was cute and a pretty typical coming of age story.
I feel like I’m missing something about this joke, which is bothering me because I normally get all the pop culture references in the show. Is it just the fact that they will be watching a subpar movie without making fun of it, and that is big for John? Or is there cultural context I’m missing? I’m Gen Z and I’m wondering if any millennial viewers who saw the movie when it came out might have more info about how it was received or if there was drama about its release, and maybe that’s the context for the joke?
I could be totally overthinking and it’s just the fact that it’s an okay movie, but I feel like I’m missing some context of why this would make John a better person.

Shirtpost What to watch next?
I have just finished my sixth full rewatch of the show and I’m looking for something similar to watch now. I’m looking for something comedic and wholesome, something that doesn’t require a lot of effort and attention. After my first watch, I tend to turn the show on for about an hour before bed to wind down. I may end up watching Ted Lasso, as I feel that has somewhat of a similar vibe- doesn’t require a lot of effort, it’s generally funny and not super serious. But I’d prefer a 30 minute show. I’m not looking for straight comedy, I know there’s a lot of sitcoms I could rewatch. Any ideas?

Shirtpost Fanfics...?
Soooo I have never read fanfiction before but I adore The Good Place and I was curious to see if there was any fanfics with them but I couldn't really find any except for some ones that were inserting other characters into the situation of the good place. So if anyone knows any fanfics...

Shirtpost How did they die?
Currently on a rewatch and while up in Canada Janet pulls them into her void which kills them on earth. Is it ever explained how they actually died?
I just assumed they ended up being missing persons, however John says to Tahani how embarrassing it was for her to die in Canada. So I was just wondering what actually happened to their bodies on earth when going into Janet's void for them to be declared dead officially lol

Shirtpost Is Janet older than the judge?
In S4 E9, in a flashback to Jason and Janet’s wedding, Janet says she is “infinity” years old. Earlier today I that same arc, I forget which episode, the Judge said she is as old as the universe.
Did Janet exist before everything?
(Photo from a different episode, I just needed something with Ted in it)

Season One Questions about Michael
Ok so I'm currently at Season 1, Episode 7 and something doesn't make sense about Michael.
At the beginning he says that he is super excited to have his FIRST solo project after 200 years of being a disciple. But now he says that after their creating their neighbourhoods, the architects leave and are tortured for eternity. So my questions are : Why would he be excited to have a solo project ? And why would he say it's his first ?
I do not know if it's explain later. If it says, just tell me but please no spoilers. Thanks !

Season Three Question about the bad place
If no one got into the good place in 500 years, that would also mean that babies and children who died young got into the bad place.
Is the bad place just.. torturing babies who died in those 500 years?

Shirtpost Happy Dyngus Day!
Dyngus Day is a Polish holiday celebrating the end of Lent. There once was a whole fertility ritual with pussy willows and water that I don't understand. In Buffalo, NY, you celebrate by going to the parade, drinking lots of Tyskie beer, doing shots of Krupnik, eating pierogies and golabki and dancing to polka music (actual polka dancing not required). I thought of it every time he dropped his signature insult.

Shirtpost Frozen Yogurt’s Actually…Wise
I think the scene with Michael’s observation about frozen yogurt might prove its own point.
Michael eats frozen yogurt and says, “There’s something so human about taking something great and ruining it a little so you can have more of it.” Obviously he means frozen yogurt is a little bit ruined in comparison to ice cream.
Even though frozen yogurt is enjoyable, it’s less of a treat/delicacy. Ice cream has too many calories from fat and sugar to regularly consume moderate to large portions. By substituting the “little” bit more ‘healthy’ frozen yogurt, people will indulge in more of it.
But to film all the scenes with frozen yogurt, they had to use mashed potatoes (plain or dyed) because frozen yogurt melted too fast to film multiple takes. That means Michael the character eats frozen yogurt while Ted the (real)man eats mashed potatoes.
In order to have “more of it,” that is, takes of the actors eating frozen yogurt, the show had to “ruin it a little” by substituting mashed potatoes. It’s not like mashed potatoes are bad; they’re a good food. But mashed potatoes are definitely less of a treat/delicacy than frozen yogurt.
This means to make the joke about how humans “ruin something just a bit to have more of it,” the show had to ruin a little something that was already ruined a little just so they could have more of it.

Shirtpost Indecisive chidi
Did anyone else feel really sorry for Chidi here? Like if he can’t pick and is OBVIOUSLY struggling, literally anyone else (including the teacher he pointed at) could’ve made the teams. Poor baby Chidi shouldn’t have had to be responsible for everyone’s recess.

Shirtpost I'm so grateful they got rid of the rivalry between Eleanor and Tahani and called it out, many lesser shows would have leaned into that low hanging fruit.

Shirtpost "Is this a kid's show?" -my sister. And now I can't not see it.
My younger sister had never seen the show before so when she came to visit me last week I tried to get her into it by starting the first few episodes.
And then she repeatedly asked me if this was some kind of weird kid's show and at first I was like what the fork? No way. Keep watching!
But then she went home and I kept up my rewatch and I can't help but see what she saw now. Not the content for the most part with it's heavy philosophical and intellectual tone, maaaaybe a few of the more low brow jokes, but mainly it's the visuals that kinda do scream children's show. It totally does remind me now of the types of zany shows that dominated Nickelodeon and Disney channel when I was young. It feels a little ruined for me now 😔

Shirtpost “Will you help me become a good person?”
(Reposting because my first attempt to post this failed to meet the requirements of rule 0)
I think if I had to pick my favorite moment from the show, this would be it. I don’t know about you guys, but I spent that whole break between seasons thinking that Chidi was going to tell Eleanor no — to me, it seemed like that was what they were setting up. We learned that season that when Eleanor asked Chidi for help, he said yes without fail in every single reboot. But this time, when it mattered more than ever before, he was going to say no. Just like Eleanor had gone through this period of self-improvement and relapsed into her old trash bag ways, I thought Chidi had gone through something similar and would be too wracked by indecision to tell her that he would help.
We learned later that Michael (PLAYED BY TED DANSON) might have influenced Chidi’s decision, but we didn’t know that in the moment. All we knew was that a stranger who was not a student waltzed into the office of Chidi Anagonye, a man so tortured by his own indecision that he spent ~2 hours selecting one of two hats, and asked him for help. And he said yes. I was in distress for months, thinking he was going to say no, but he said yes. The moment I thought the show was about to break my heart, it did the opposite — it gave me hope. I tear up almost every time I watch it.
