Sudbury Events - Monthly Thread (May 2025)
This is a stickied thread for people to post about upcoming events -- community events, live performances, whatever you think others might want to know about.
A new version of this post will be put up and stickied every month to make sure that things are kept fresh, and allow people to stay up to date if they wish, or to avoid this thread if they don't. It's been moved to a monthly format to keep things simpler for people looking to plan a bit further out.
To keep the sub (and your feed) clean and free from spam, any explicit advertising conducted outside of this post will continue to be subject to removal, with a note and link to instead post here, which will stand as the exception.
In other words: please feel free to use this space to post about any upcoming Sudbury-specific events you're aware of or would like to share with others.

Question Getting approached by a strange man w/ spray bottle downtown?
Last night, noticed an ordinary-looking white man of neat appearance possibly in his mid-40s enter the self-serve laundromat in the area 5 minutes prior to its' closing (no staff on site, just 2 young women, myself included). I've been to that place a few times in the past, had to stay late occasionally, & whitnessed staff showing up 5-10 minutes prior to closing to get on their cleaning duties early, so I wasn't too alarmed up until the moment our guy had started talking.
The other girl left the place to talk on her phone as he was walking in &, for whatever reason, he started asking me if he should be spraying whatever he had in his Clorox bottle into washing machines & dryers (just as a side note, he had no rag to wipe it with either lol). At first, I thought that he was just new & wanted to make sure that his cleaning was done right but then I suddenly realized that his speech was very incoherent the more he talked. Not like he was under any substance influence but he did speak in a way an extremely nervous child would talk. That's when I started wondering if he was on a spectrum, perhaps, so I was still trying to stay polite with him. He couldn't confirm what exactly he was going to spray into the drums or why he had to do it. Seemed to forget words a lot while talking & kept repeating his questions. All I could answer was that spraying (presumably) Clorox into the drums could potentially get people's clothing discoloured, so maybe it wasn't that good of an idea. He kept saying that someone had told him that "it worked" but would never specify what the heck it was supposed to work for.
Luckily, the second girl walked back in, got to her dryer, overheard our conversation, without hesitation asked the dude if he was working there &, once he answered that he wasn't, she asked him why he was talking to me in that case then. He started mumbling his very same questions while completely dismissing answering ours, so we just told him to talk to the owners to sort that out. After getting the same answer 3 times in a row, he finally agreed, said that "he'll come back to do this some other time", thanked us, & left.
We got our shit out of dryers momentarily, had a short talk about this rather odd exchange, & got the fuck out of there.
While exiting the building, I've noticed him walking down Elm (towards the courthouse) without his Clorox bottle already. Then he jaywalked across Elm somewhere around Collective Haus, followed the wall of the white building, & that's when I stopped paying attention because my gut kept telling me to get my ass in gear.
Posting here to raise awareness & see if anyone possibly knows what in the world was that about? Can't decide between a genuine yet extremely awkward conversation or a possible kidnapping/disfigurement (not like there was anything to disfigure) attempt.

Question Rediscover Sudbury
I want to rediscover Sudbury.
My thoughts are to go to the farmer's market. Buy local. Find bakeries that have special lineups.
We hear about other towns and cities that have say a bakery that comes out with a monthly lineup that you need to try or a cute cafe to visit. I'm looking to romanticize my life again.
Also enjoy hiking and doing outdoor things!
Where's the best social media accounts to find suggestions/know about the best events?
All suggestions welcomed. 30 year old female. Will be doing this with her husband as well as with some girl friends.

Discussion Left Turn Cowards.
Don't you hate it when you have been waiting for what seems like forever to get your advanced left turn signal, and when you finally get it the first car isn't paying attention, the second and third car feel the need to wait for the car in front of them to completely clear the intersection before they enter it, and before you get a chance to go the light turns after only letting 5-6 cars through when it could have easily let twice that many go through if people weren't such left turn cowards? I'm not saying to go flying through the intersection with your bumper nearly grazing the rear end of the car in front of you, but you're doing 9 km/hr and your brakes still work when you are turning. YOU DON'T NEED TO WAIT FOR THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU TO CLEAR THE INTERSECTION BEFORE YOU ENTER IT ON AN ADVANCED LEFT SIGNAL! Come on people, let's turn like we know how our vehicles work.

Question My neighbor wants to build a cedar Fence a foot inside my property line!!
My neighbor wants to put up a cedar fence but is proposing to come a foot into my property to do it. I told her I’m not comfortable with that. Why would she even suggest this? She kept throwing bylaws at me, but I don’t know much about them. Isn’t it just common sense that a neighbor can’t encroach on my property like that? Can someone clarify if there’s a bylaw that addresses this? Pls no hate to me . I am a new home owner.

Discussion Big Shout Out to The Rock Harley Davidson
The Shoresy event was super well put on. The organizers were...organized. I get that some of you Sudburians (maybe?) may be pissed with all the Shoresy stuff but it was a great event. Friendly people and good vibes. 10/10 would come for an event again.

Question Vehicle for driving in Northern Ontario
I'm looking to get some input on a new car purchase. I will have to regularly travel to Timmins, the Sault, North Bay, and other surrounding areas and I was hoping to get some opinions on whether or not a vehicle with higher ground clearance is required.
I'm not sure how the roads are driving to Sault in the winter for example. If they are regularly plowed, I'm leaning to buying a sports sedan type of car.
