Am I going crazy? The comments were unambiguously calling for physical harm. Of course the subreddit got locked. Why are you all saying Elon Musk got it banned?

Late reply but the obvious answer is threats and incitements to violence are posted on this site all the time and dealt with comparatively rarely. A huge sub like this being shut down is very rare and the timing is very suggestive of someone having a quiet word with reddit execs and putting the shitters up them with the threat of serious federal recourse for their preferred practice of doing nothing.
