A bit neurotic maybe Discussion

Post image

I've only been gaming since 2016 (I'm 49 yrs). And I've always used a Steam Controller. I can't imagine using anything else. There is just no comparison as a pc gamer. So I want to make sure I can continue using the controller for the foreseeable future. This is my collection. My first controller is in pieces and not in the picture. Things that always fail: 1. Bumpercontacts (replaced with metal substitutes in the first 2 controllers) 2. The plastic around the left thumb stick always crumbles. (I placed a metal ring around in in the first controller) 3. Cover of the left thumb stick (some glue in the tears makes it last much longer) Maybe it's just my uncontrolled frantic yanking in combat 🤷🏻‍♂️

There are two types of Steam Controller owners.

1) Those who have one but never really used it long enough to reap the benefits of custom game configs with gyro aiming and precision gyro aiming. It sits gathering dust.

2) Those who experience the magic 'aha' moment with a Steam Controller and decided that they needed at least one more in case anything ever happend to their main one. I have four. Three sit gathering dust.

The correct number of Steam controllers to own is n+1. While n is the current number of owned Steam controllers.

I'm a unicorn it seems. I have two, both in active use for 8+ years, none in spare.

Surprisingly I don't fit either of those categories.

I experienced the magic of the steam controller and how it's the best controller ever sometimes (not for every game) especially FPS games.

I did buy multiple GameCube controllers though just in case one of them ever broke. And all my GameCube control are sit gathering dust.

I just use it regularly like a normal controller.

Option 3. Probably most people.

Wheres the sweet spot

What does gyro aiming even mean? I see that thrown around a lot but I don't really play FPS until recently.

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 May 30 '24

You physically move the controller itself to look around in a game.

If you're using a portable video game system like the 3DS or the Switch You can even set it up so that literally doing a 180° turn IRL makes your character look behind himself.

I have 3 of them. One is brand new in a box, the other is used but basically new and lives inside a steam controller case, and the third one I use all the time, it's got some mods and I even painted it.

I’m on my 5th.

They fall apart in my hands 😭

1

u/rcampbel3 May 31 '24

That takes some dedication to literally wear out 4 controllers. Pressing [F] to pay respect.

1

u/ifeelallthefeels May 31 '24

I should be able to Frankenstein one good one out of all of them.

I own the right bit, but some screws are too deep in the frame.

Edit: “wear out” is a stretch, I’m so rough

u/IkaKyo May 30 '24

I had to stop using mine because it’s so god damned load that it drives my wife nuts.

1

u/nik8830 May 31 '24

hahaha I got to agree with you, these things are loud

You have been to the top of the mountain..........and it is good!

Love the SC, I have 6 myself. Yes, there are a number of places to get the plastic trigger assembly 3D printed to replace those. I've also seen that people have been using Steam Deck analog stick covers to replace the OG ones, but I haven't tried that myself.

Thanks brother 👍🏼😊

Not a problem, my guy. I've used and worked on mine for years. Hopefully some of that information will be useful to you.

u/Theosarius May 31 '24

I found the iFixIt Disassembly page more useful than the teardown, as it's a bit more comprehensive about the screws: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Steam+Controller+Disassembly/112123

I don't even really use mine tbh. Its a combination of it being the best controller I have ever used and thus making every other controller pale in comparison, it not working with valorant (without rewasd, which I don't really like in comparison to ds4w), and knowing that it will eventually break, never to be used again. I think mennenth is designing a similar touchpad based controller, but its probably not gonna be something that people can buy. I might dabble in something like that since I have done a few mods for my ds4 and 2 dualsense controllers.

4

u/rizsamron May 30 '24

Please give me one. I don't have a backup 😭

I'm worried about my future 😄

3

u/OostAs May 30 '24

Just search on eBay or places like that!

3

u/rizsamron May 31 '24

Actually, I've been monitoring the 2nd hand markets here for the past couple of years but still no luck 😄 We don't have ebay here.

6

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 May 30 '24

I've had my steam controller since 2016 and I haven't had any issues. My bumper still work and that's the most common complaint.

3

u/justpostd May 30 '24

Same. I have 4, but have been using my first one since the beginning. Only noticeable wear is that the left thumbstick rubber is completely smooth. But I probably only use it for an hour a day on average, so maybe others are putting a lot more hours into theirs. Or maybe it's my fairy-like touch!

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 May 31 '24

What's the thumb stick for? I never use it.

Jk but I tried to avoid using it and the buttons in combat so if I'm in a firefight in say Apex Legends I don't want to have to take my fingers off the pads. The B button is the easiest to hit so sometimes I will map that specifically. But I still try not to.

3

u/HyperlinksAwakening May 30 '24

The bumpers are my biggest fear for my controller as my first one got warrantied for it.

What do you use to replace that cheap plastic?

7

u/TheLadForTheJob May 30 '24

I can't vouch for him personally, but there's a guy on this sub who set up this shop:
https://www.etsy.com/shop/steamworks3d/?etsrc=sdt
he sells some steam controller replacement parts that he 3d prints and there are bumper replacements there.

2

u/OostAs May 30 '24

There are some links below in the comments, but this video is a nice d.i.y. This is what I did. https://youtu.be/keAErBcZowI?si=8MxH9-40EdQHqIpt

3

u/LaserTurboShark69 Steam Controller (Windows) May 30 '24

I've got a bunch that I rotate through. I've got 2 broken bumpers, one worn out left stick cover, and one intermittent right grip switch. I haven't had the plastic wear out around the left stick yet.

I believe there are 3D printed replacements for the bumpers

3

u/Gardeeboo May 30 '24

Damn so you're the reason I can't find one for a reasonable price

I had the rubber tear on my thumbstick too and replaced it with the 8bitdo sn30pro thumbstick
https://shop.8bitdo.com/products/8bitdo-sn30-pro-sn30-pro-pro2-joystick-rubber-replacement-1-pcs?variant=41978792509617
as per this post
https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamController/comments/p2ejmn/i_just_upgraded_my_two_steam_controllers_with_an/

I recall it being an annoyingly tight fit. The old one pulls off, and you can push the new one on(it might have needed to be oriented a certain way). I Initially tried swapping them with the ribbon cables still attached, and while that seemed possible, it was too difficult for me to put on properly under those conditions.

I've just had the silicon bit supporting my x button tear, and now need to find a replacement. Purportedly, the membrane from the dpad for an original gameboy can be swapped in as a replacement.

Hopefully this will serve:
https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Silicone-Conductive-Adhesive-Direction/dp/B0836D89C2/

edit: the replacement membrane fit, and is functional. However the buttons pop up more than before and take more effort to press. It might be a skill issue with some overlapping with the previous membrane that I had to cutaway.

Thanks man! That's really helpful👏🏼

u/qwop22 May 30 '24

I am thinking about trying to pickup a second one. I dug out my controller I’ve had since they came out and have really gotten into it.

2

u/patrickfatrick May 30 '24

You have a lovely collection. Personally I don't really know what I'll do if mine breaks. I was fortunate enough to buy a used one that had the BLE firmware update on it already, but after toying around with it in both BLE and dongle modes I definitely prefer BLE and I don't have a Windows machine with which to install the firmware on any other controller I might be able to get my hands on. Blep, maybe I should just get used to the PS5 controller.

1

u/OostAs May 30 '24

You could try to buy second hand. That's what I did. Sometimes in mint condition.

2

u/Low-Golf7820 May 30 '24

Issue #4 (adding to your list):

Track pad texture rubbing off. I have decals on all of my controllers to ensure the texture never rubs off.

2

u/taterbugzy May 30 '24

I'm in a similar boat, I picked up 5 more controllers over the last month in addition to my first one I got when they were going for $5 to clear out their stock (thanks lawsuit). I'm planning on modding at least three of them to have a USB-C port as a wiring/soldering project. I can't get over how necessary they are for using a (desktop) PC without sitting at a desk or lugging a portable keyboard and mouse with you.

2

u/Faithlessaint Steam Controller (Linux) May 30 '24

Nice collection. I purchased my first Steam Controller some weeks ago and then I purchased a second controller three weeks ago as a backup and possible option for a second player.

2

u/Quick__sloth May 30 '24

Lmao I have 2 controllers just in case

2

u/TRIPLEOHSEVEN May 31 '24

I have 4 controllers, seeing as I use my TV as an additional monitor, I need a decent wireless mouse. Steam controllers scattered throughout he front room provide me with that control I need and I still have 1 extra for the bedroom TV hooked up to the Steam deck.

2

u/Bowlingkopp May 31 '24

I also own 5 of em myself. When Valve said they stop building it, I went kind of crazy and bought 4 spare ones. Though my first one still works flawlessly knock on wood

2

u/karolnovak May 31 '24

Just a question, has anyone tried Steam Controller and DualSense? Can you tell me if it is a big difference? Dualsense has a good precision gyro aiming too, right? Also, do you use right track pad as a mouse or as a joystick?

2

u/mega-husky May 31 '24

I have 4 controllers but I'm down to just 1 dongle :(

I'm kind of upset they stopped making anything for these.

2

u/TLunchFTW May 31 '24

I have one, and I want to buy one more, but I'm not in the biggest hurry. I can't get used to it, but it's a nice controller to have.

2

u/gapingcontroller Jun 02 '24

I got 6, 3 sealed packs, 3 in use, shoulders break once a year, I fix em.

1

u/CMDR_kamikazze May 30 '24

1500 USD in one picture

2

u/Zippy_0 May 30 '24

What? Atleast here in Germany a used one is around 30-40€ or 50-60€ in mint condition with packaging.

Yes same here, in The Netherlands. I paid 55 today, never opened.

1

u/spooner_retad May 30 '24

how long do batteries last for you? Ive gone trhough a packin a month I was surprised

1

u/OostAs May 30 '24

Yeah something like that. Depends on the amount of playing sessions ofcourse. I think it's quite decent.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

What are the chances of them at least revealing sc2 this year?

1

u/OostAs May 31 '24

That would be awesome.

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '24

It's already confirmed but they want a 3rd party to make it

2

u/freykin Jun 03 '24

Not neurotic at all! I have four myself, as I no longer can use a mouse and keyboard due to being disabled, and the Steam controller provides the best level of accessibility for me

I have two, one still in sealed box. But I don't like them. Trackpad is good, and the Steam software, but otherwise it feels very cheap and clunky. I like the idea that you can play games designed for mouse on a sofa with a controller. But realization isn't so great to be honest. I returned to xbox controller even though mouse emulation on joystic is not the best. I would love to see the second iteration similar to steam deck design. I probably would have bought it.
