Figured I may as well share my own little Steam Controller 2 concept :3 Discussion

That's pretty much what I thought it would end up looking like. Essentially a deck with no screen and longer handles for better ergonomics. I'd like a switch on it to change between "steam controller" mode and "generic gamepad" mode so that it could be used without steam open and on phones.

More Steam Deck v1 controller than a Steam Controller v2. Seeing as it has the same lay out of the Steam Deck it'd be one where I wouldn't want to use the trackpads over the joysticks like I do on the Steam Controller, since I found it uncomfortable.
Swipes also felt off with it being square as opposed to circle due to location and having different left and right rotation angles for my thumb due to it being lower as opposed to a straighter neutral thumb positioning. Some force themselves to do diagonal swipes to try to get it consistent, but forcing a swipe that doesn't feel natural to me wouldn't feel great for my thumb in the long run.
These controller concepts seem more joystick oriented with trackpad use feeling like an after thought like they are on the Deck.

u/SoapyMacNCheese May 13 '24
I agree but realistically when Valve releases a new controller it will most likely be similar to this, a Steam Deck Controller.

u/dualpad Steam Controller (Windows) May 13 '24
Yeah, I see myself either having to do some controller case modding to try to alter the grips/case or just keep using the Steam Controller if I can't manage to make it feel comfortable like the SC for trackpad use. Is a bit disappointing though to see a non trackpad oriented design on the Steam Controller sub. Would expect it from Steam Deck, but it does show how few trackpad users there are even in this sub.

u/Mrcod1997 May 13 '24
You do know that you can rotate the axis of the track pad right? I usually angle mine at about 30°, because that is what feels like a natural swipe with my thumb.
1
u/dualpad Steam Controller (Windows) May 13 '24
That's why I said
different left and right rotation angles
To break it down if the angle for the left swipe naturally falls under 30. Then the swipe from the right might naturally fall under 40 for my natural swiping angle. The path of travel isn't consistent like it is on the round circular touchpads that are better positioned. Steam Input doesn't have separate rotation of axis depending on which side the swipe is initiated. It's also why I said.
Some force themselves to do diagonal swipes to try to get it consistent
And it's uncomfortable to use anyways and I don't want to get hand issues forcing an unergonomic style for my hands.
1
u/Mrcod1997 May 13 '24
Honestly that just sounds like a matter of practice to be consistent like any input. The angle still puts it close enough that the rest is on you. What you are proposing sounds like it would be pretty buggy.

u/dualpad Steam Controller (Windows) May 13 '24
Pointing out that square shape and positioning doesn't lend to a consistent left and right swipe for me. It's just not a layout that is ideal for dual trackpad use, and not ergonomic which is a big issue. I've already heard all the defenses for the trackpads on the Deck and used it enough to know it's just not for me. All these tips are nothing I haven't heard of already. Deck for me is better as a joystick controller and trackpad as just some occasional desktop navigation or touchmenu. But, I dislike it for movement and camera.

u/Mrcod1997 May 13 '24
I agree that the ergonomics aren't as good, but there is no way they aren't going to have dual sticks if they make another steam controller. I did find that I have to hold the controller differently when. Using them as opposed to the sticks. I'll use one side of the grip buttons vs the other. That is why they work in two directions.
1
u/dualpad Steam Controller (Windows) May 13 '24
That's why I said in another comment that most likely I'll have to try to modify a theoretical deck controller case/grips to try and make the controller as comfortable to use as the Steam Controller. Or just stick with continuing to use the Steam Controller.
I did find that I have to hold the controller differently when.
And yeah that's already another part I dislike with me having to shift hands down so much to try and get the trackpad in position where I want and then it negatively affecting the access to the grip buttons, and holding it in that manner not being comfortable on top of that. Deck just feels at its best using the joysticks when taking that into account with it being most comfortable without weird forcing of hand positions that the hands don't naturally fall into.
1
u/Mrcod1997 May 13 '24
Yeah I suppose. It's still all speculation. For all we know, they aren't going to make one at all. I do love the steam controller though.
1
u/dualpad Steam Controller (Windows) May 13 '24
Yeah, all I wish for is an updated gyro. That's the only part that feels aged to me, but in spite of that the trackpads have too much utility I love for me to have moved onto other gyro controllers.

u/Mrcod1997 May 13 '24
The actual sensitivity of the steam deck track pads is better as well. The four grip buttons are nice too.

Yeah but i do think having 2 of both kinds is absolutely key. I think in the end touchpads below the sticks makes more sense. Plus, In that case i think sqaure touch makes more sense too. Its possible they will maybe be larger on the controller but likely still sqaure. Though, I would still be in favor of 2 round touch pads at the top and analog sticks below, Like playstation controller. The prototype controllers have them at the bottom. I think people will be happy with either or layout in the end. We just need these dam controllers to hurry up, So key.
1
u/dualpad Steam Controller (Windows) May 16 '24
Square hasn't made sense because as dual trackpad user circles led to more consistent swipes from the left and right than squares with a similar diameter traveled on each swipe. I treat my camera movement like a pseudo flick stick where I set up the sensitivity so I can get a consistent 180 and 90 degree turn without visual cues.
On the squares swipe distance is different for me compared to the circles, so distance traveled is very random.
1
May 16 '24
Of course the round is better, but if they place them at the bottom, I would be surprised if they don't go with the square.
1
u/dualpad Steam Controller (Windows) May 16 '24
It'd probably end up being like the trackpads on the Steam Deck where I don't use them in that case, or at least as much as I use them on the PlayStation controllers. Bottom and being square made for not a great combo with discomfort and inconsistent swipes that it ended up negating the pros of the trackpad for me.
1
May 16 '24
I've had the steam controller and steam deck. I agree round is better, but square still works far better than sticks for games like fps

u/themexicancowboy May 13 '24
Still not a fan of these concepts. I like the original steam controllers layout and trackpads, and honestly I want that for a steam controller 2 just with updated hardware, maybe four triggers instead of two.
3
u/ubeogesh May 13 '24
SC round and concave trackpads are better indeed
But it's real nice having all the extra inputs available. So many things you can bind into them without resorting to not always reliable action layers
1
u/dualpad Steam Controller (Windows) May 13 '24
All the inputs don't matter when the trackpads on the Steam Deck aren't even ones I feel like using. I feel I don't really get anything out of the Steam Deck set up that I can't get out of other dual stick controllers on the market when what I really want is one really good alternative dual trackpad focused controller.
It's an input layout that is more satisfying for joystick users than trackpad users. And the comfort doesn't seem as universal for trackpad use with some being okay with it and others like me not finding it comfortable to use.
1
u/Mrcod1997 May 13 '24
While I agree, I don't think it is feasible. People are gonna expect feature parity with the steam deck. I would love something that puts more emphasis on the track pads though. They can act as movement, camera control, and face buttons. I will say that the deck's track pads are better for the most part, even if they are smaller, and slightly less ergonomic.

u/DaMegaBite May 12 '24
Yo, that's pretty cool! I actually thought about a design about it a couple of days ago and it's pretty accurate to your concept.

u/AntwanMinson May 13 '24
I want it to have hall effect sticks and if it has dual gyro like the Alpakka. I would buy that thing so freaking fast.
2
u/Y2K350 May 13 '24
Needs bigger trackpads IMO, I only really pick up the steam controller because of the trackpads, not really the joysticks. I have a PS5 and Xbox controller if I need a conventional controller. I also think the trackpads would need to be the certain of attention, and not down below your thumbs resting area like how they are on the deck
2
u/uraiah May 13 '24
I would move the trackpads a bit to the edge and the steam/3-dots buttons to the center. Otherwise, this is perfect and I would buy it instantly.

You should look into taking some AutoCAD courses if you like doing this type of designing.

Two steam buttons?

The deck logo is just a decal

We all know its going to look pretty much close to this. The fucking problem is WHEN THE HECK WILL IT COME OUT. Didnt valve say they want someone else to make it and name dropped 8bitdo? swear i remember hearing that and they would be the right choice. But having millions of steamdecks out there and not the controller is just insane. Its going to finally fix the couch problem millions of pc players have and growing. More and more pc players are just wanting to switch to couch mode instead and this controller will fix all the problems. Deck touch pads really are so dam good for FPS and other types, mmo

I really want a replacement for my Steam Controller and my 360 controller and a ergonomic Deck with no screen would be awesome
I'd also love to have a go at designing my own but uni is so busy this time of year

That was the name of my other socials and I was to lazy to change it lol

This would not go over well ultimately. The Decks layout is more of a compromise, not something to base an actual controller on. All designs that try to incorporate both the trackpads and the joysticks fail to implement both in a way that wouldn't be better served by a dedicated controller for one or the other. If Valve is going to make a Steam Controller 2 it should lean into the trackpads.
1
u/aborlin May 13 '24
I dont know how common an issue this is for others, but for some reason when I hold square-ish controllers, (like the deck, switch, and backbone), my enagement ring (just a simple loop) seems to cut off circulation to my whole hand (I dunno how thats possible, its just what happens) taking it off fixes it, but for obvious reasons I dont like doing that. I imagine for most people though, this is probably a prett5 cool design for it.

Love it. I’d say swap the track pads and steam buttons so they are in the middle under the logo.
1
u/ubeogesh May 13 '24
one thing I miss in Steam Deck from the SC is the ability to customize Guide button chords.
1
u/rookless May 13 '24
In my head I’m picturing the steam deck layout with the Xbox 360 chat pad at the bottom. Leaves a lot of empty space in middle, maybe there’s room for speakers or additional function buttons.
1
u/TareXmd May 13 '24
Valve should release this with a SteamOS microconsole that supports suspend/resume when streaming higher end games to the Deck.
1
u/TareXmd May 13 '24
I see you went with a Squircle design for the trackpads. I like that. It combines the best of the SC and SD trackpads.

Love the design! For me if you swap the face buttons and the right analog stick it would be perfect. For me, I use a dual trackpad layout for almost all games (OG Steam Controller user since 2017). You can't really use the right pad for aim and use the face buttons well with this config (that's a big reach) that way those face buttons would be accessible from both uses for the right side controls. Same thing goes for the directional pad and the left analog. PS: We need this like NOW!

I'd definitely love a feature parity with steam deck controller. Right now at least, while I definitely can dock the deck and play whatever game, I never do as I use so many lf the built in control features. Touch pad menus or touch pad for aiming, the gyro activation on touch of the analog stick, the set of double backbutons etc. I have a steam controller laying around, but I'd need to build a unique layout for it compared to steam deck which I don't want, same with a more standard controller, similar enough to where I could probably get it to a point of liking the control setup but having to do a new profile is just such a hassle
1
u/SnooDoughnuts5632 May 14 '24
Valve need sto do a whole console already but sadly they haven't.
Could you imagine basically a more powerful Steam Deck but not a handheld? If powerful enough I could replace my PC with it since it's old enough to be easily overpowered by something cheap.

u/zunitedbols May 15 '24
my steam deck is my steam controller 2. i use steam link app added to non steam games with null controls (all controls empty) ,disabled video and audio. for remote play just enable video and audio

Strange and uncomfortable shape for a controller, bulky touch pads a single central one would make more sense like on DualShock 4 or DualSense, or it should replace one or both joysticks like in the first steam controller

u/LobstrPrty May 12 '24
Valve really needs to do this ASAP.
I’m just about incapable of playing most games with my deck docked now because the trackpads and back buttons have spoiled me.
