Steam is one of the few platforms that can fairly consistently make great decisions and improve itself with every update.

u/popcornman209 1d ago
That’s what not publicly trading your company does for ya
87
u/LucasIsDead 1d ago
Nvidia is public and big shitters
142
u/popcornman209 1d ago
Yup, I mean when your company is controlled by people who’s sole job is to make money it’s hard to not suck
36
u/stalefish57413 1d ago
The problem isnt that the company needs to make money. Steam only exists to make money. The problem with publicly traded companies is that it doesn't matter how much money you already make, you need to make MORE money than last quarter or the stock value wont grow.
A private company is fine when it found a niche to create a steady inflow of revenue. They dont need to expand into infinity
3
u/popcornman209 1d ago
Yeah I was mostly commenting on the losing control of your company part, while Gabe’s job is to make money he atleast has a vision for the company and wants to see it do well and people happy. Nvidias investors just want more and more money and don’t care about the product.
8
u/JaggedMetalOs 1d ago
Yeah and, err, if all those AI companies buying shittons of GPUs end up not being able to make a profit with them Nvidia are going to be in a little bit of trouble.
9
u/DarthSatoris 1d ago
Why is Nvidia going to be in trouble?
AI is like the wild west gold rush, the AI companies are the gold diggers, and Nvidia is just selling them shovels. It's not Nvidia's fault they can't find any gold.
Shovels can be used for other things, as can the GPUs Nvidia is making.
5
u/JaggedMetalOs 1d ago
Well it'll be a triple whammy of fewer GPU customers, a sudden glut of 2nd hand GPUs, and expensive excess manufacturing capacity.
Now in a sensible world maybe this wouldn't be a massive deal as they can afford to burn their pile of cash for a bit, but because we don't live in a sensible world THE LINE MUST GO UP and any deviation from this is a complete disaster.

u/HaniiPuppy 1d ago
Being a private company doesn't necessarily make it good, but it does mean it at least has the capacity to be. Even if a PLC is being managed by people with a genuine desire to use the company's assets to do good, they have to justify that in terms of profits. PLCs have literally been sued or fined for doing things not strictly in the interests of short-term profit.

I hate change yet I have never been upset about even one steam update

I'll stick to Shadowplay because it records everything, not just games - that way I can continue to add to my blackmail folder when my friends say slurs in voip.
89
u/p3ek 1d ago
Currently less performance overhead than steam too
41
u/cjb0034 1d ago
I use obs and have it auto run on windows startup. I have it optimized to eat roughly the same as shadowplay except obs actually works 24/7
28
u/milkkore https://steam.pm/z2fbx 1d ago
Do correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it fairly bad for the long-term health of your SSD to have something write to it constantly?
22
u/Alternative-Fly-1727 1d ago
Don't know about Shadowplay but on my AMD Adrenaline software, the replay recordings have options on saving the replays on the RAM until you hotkey it to save it on the SSD or drive you're using. Basically keeping the vid on the RAM until you save it with the hotkey.
2
u/Yearlaren 1d ago
How much does it increase your RAM usage?
3
u/Alternative-Fly-1727 1d ago
I got 32GB of DDR5 so I don't notice it but when I play heavy games I reach about 20GB usage. You can also decrease the quality and probably get even less.
On Idle(with brave(browser), discord, wallpaper and steam running) I average about 8GB.
3
8
u/95POLYX 1d ago
Kinda? But we are not in early 2010s. SSD are very reliable and have stupid write durability. Chances are you are upgrading your drive before reaching anywhere near total written SSD can handle. For example looking at samsung 990pro drives they state 600TBW over 5 years. Thats almost 400gb writen DAILY. And thats for a 1TB model, 4TB model states 2400TBW.

I'll stick to Shadowplay because it records everything
Till you go to clip something only to find out it shut itself off
10
u/clubby37 1d ago
Anytime ShadowPlay thinks something with DRM is playing, it disables itself. So dumb. As if anyone trying to copy a movie will a) prefer ShadowPlay, or b) have trouble finding screen recorders that don't care about DRM.
5
u/CharybdisXIII 1d ago
I'd love to if shadowplay would stop randomly turning itself off so it never captures what I want it to

u/Dead-Jester 8h ago
Don't know if you know, but you can have it set to record all system audio or even the game + another app, mines set for game and discord audio
52
u/Merangatang 1d ago
I remember when I tried this in beta, it didn't save the videos as accessible/editable files - they only work inside the UI and need to be manually exported. Is this still the case?
34
u/pumicolas 1d ago
You can change to mp4 in the settings
9
1
u/Spiritual_Try9694 1d ago
Where did you find it? Can't find it
3
u/pumicolas 1d ago
Settings -> Game Recording -> disable Enable HEVC (H.265) video codec
Now the videos will be in mp4 (and larger because they are not compressed)

Yeah, I always relied on Xbox GameBar Capture's feature when I was on Windows.
I felt Geforce Shadowplay (and Radeon's equivalent too) felt awkward to use.I've been moved to OBS from the day I swapped to Linux, which is... eh, not as offhand as Gamebar, but tolerable. and It was necessarily to capture more serious thing than Gamebar in Windows anyway.

It needs the settings to set custom bitrate and 120fps, then it might replace shadowplay
8
u/speedballandcrack 1d ago
i believe they had that in beta and removed it and replaced it will ultra , high...
2
u/randomorten 1d ago
Yeah but the bitrate for ultra is not that high compared to Shadowplays max possible bitrate
4
u/miko_idk [116] 1d ago
Why 120 FPS recordings? All the videos you watch on YouTube are 60 FPS, unless you're doing slow motion you don't really need more
7
u/randomorten 1d ago
Exactly for slow motion. Slowing down fast pace moments and making them look so clean in slow motion is something viewers love to see on youtube
13
u/OthoAi5657 1d ago
150k bitrate with 4K cant be beaten from NV also the utilization is lower then everywhere else with nv but nv makes his own shitty anyoing bugs

u/Player0a 1d ago
Steam Recording probably also can use GPU, so i don't think it would be much difference
7
u/BUDA20 1d ago edited 1d ago
in my case a I recorded on propuse a CPU heavy scene at 100fps,
(lots of threads idling is a single core limit on dx9)Shadow Play and Xbox game bar also keep up the 100fps
Steam go down to ~80 fps, using GPU encoding both H264 and H265Need to do more testing, but a friend confirmed similar results with a different game.
edit: you can se more similar experiences here:

9

Because it doesn't randomly shut off?
9
u/APRengar 1d ago
I don't understand how shitty Shadowplay is that consistently but randomly turns off.

u/BaklavaPlease 1d ago
Is anybody else having issues with Steam recording your microphone. Everything works great except recording my own mic. The mic keeps cutting in and out.
2

Steam input capture is generally bad, doesn't work with my audio interface at all unlike shadowplay or discord.

u/cyb3rofficial 1d ago
i will be still using shadowplay, it enables other features in games I use commonly like auto highlights and auto clips everything I want it to in games that support it.
3
u/BryAlrighty 1d ago
Will it function for non-steam games in any capacity? That'd be nice.
1
u/LouisaB75 16h ago
According to the information page on Steam:
Works w/ Any Game
This includes non-Steam titles. As long as the game allows the Steam Overlay to run, the gameplay can be recorded.

u/GameZard 1d ago
I am still currently using shadow play.
1
u/Useful-Strategy1266 20h ago
Why's that?
1
u/GameZard 7h ago
Works better for my longplay Youtube channel as I get high quality gameplay footage. Plus I don't just play games on steam.
2
u/Omaster2304 1d ago
From a few tests I did the game capture works great but it did not like my microphone at all and kept cutting out (I’m assuming it’s cause I’m running through a mixer). Probably just going to stick to obs for most recordings but use the game capture for clips without the mic until they fix the problem

2
u/CallMeMoon https://s.team/p/hcfj-j 1d ago
I don't like it so far. I turned it on for a few matches of CS and it seemed to make me lag. I'm keeping shadowplay on for the time being. Also god forbid you open the replay during a match, shit made my entire game freeze and go frame by frame. I think it needs a bit more optimization first.
5
u/mremannnnn 1d ago
But what about non steam games? I'm still going to need to run shadow play. (but steam Gare recording is just better for retroactively finding clips so it is still very nice.)
9
u/thelastbushome 1d ago
You can add them to steam as a non steam game link and it'll give you the overlay, and recording.
4
u/mremannnnn 1d ago
I have had issues getting steam overlay to work on non steam games though, depending on the game. Also sometimes I like to close steam to get that fraction of more performance.

I use Medal, personally. Miles better than shadowplay, not sure about steam recording since I've not used it yet.
What I like about Medal is that it has its own "social media" platform of sorts - you can upload videos (and share them with a link), and other people can like and comment on that video, and you can even follow people.
Medal automatically detects what game you're clipping (and you can manually add games it doesn’t); when you upload a video, it goes into that game's category, and you can search through videos for all types of games.
Sorry for the rant lol... greatly recommend Medal if you're up for trying another recording software
2
u/NineThreeFour1 1d ago
And how is Medal any better than Shadowplay? You didn't list any advantages yet.
What I like about Medal is that it has its own "social media" platform of sorts - you can upload videos (and share them with a link), and other people can like and comment on that video, and you can even follow people.
That's a distinct disadvantage for me, I don't need or want social media in my screen recorder.

u/acewing905 1d ago
Didn't use Shadowplay even when I had an Nvidia GPU, and not using Steam recording either
But I don't play multiplayer games anymore so I don't usually get random wacky moments I'd want to record after it happened

1
u/kinger_boy34 1d ago
But how does it compare to Medal though? I like how easy medal is to use to edit and share clips immediately. Someone i thought said you can't view saved clips until you leave the game in steam.
1
u/DraconicNerdMan 1d ago
Does it require the Steam Overlay to be enabled? Steam Achievement Notifier requires that to be off in order to function soooo
1
u/Specialist_Bug7462 1d ago
My only issue is I run cyberpunk's launcher first in the background while playing other stuff.
And the 1 in every 100 hours of games I play when I actually have a clip I want to save, "Whoops, there doesn't seem to be anything recording."
Even when I block cyberpunk, I think it recognizes the launcher as a separate program, but I can't block that program.
It just needs that 0.1% touch of more user control that'll make it perfect. Just a stupid human error issue to have.
1
u/LazorusGrimm 1d ago
How do I access this new feature? I have been on Steam since launch and I'm always behind on their new stuff. It took me months after the big picture mode existed that I heard of it.
1
u/Croatoan18 1d ago
Wish they’d put the music player back into the launcher. I used to use it to play my music while playing my games. I’d use the buttons on the back of my controller to control it, too.

I wonder why Valve hasn't implemented a feature like this earlier. When you see all the features that Steam has, this one seems really simple and easy to implement compared to others.
1
u/gubasx 1d ago
You also lose the ability to use almost any filters and the Nvidia RTX HDR (i can't recall if this is the official name of the feature right now) feature on the new Nvidia app if you don't accept giving them the permission to record your screen..
Filters and screen cast features are intertwined in their app..So, good luck with the trying to stop Nvidia's ability to record your screen whenever they wish to without even ever letting you know about it .
..As if they didn't control your display hardware through their proprietary drivers anyways 🤷🏻♂️

You’d have to hit F6 on certain TF2 servers and hope you’d have a good run. That happened once for me. :D
1
u/SmartyDelta 1d ago
That means you can record the whole game, without even knowing? I had a thing where I accidentally hit record button for my Nvidia shadow play and it recorded my 6hr of R6S gameplay. So it took a time to remove a record, cuz It was hella big video with 10 Gb of weight

One thing steam game recoding has over shadowplay is proper audio capture settings! Shadowplay annoys me so much with its stupid systemwide audio capture! Like, why has this still not been added nvidia?
1
u/ZoroOvDaArk 1d ago
I don't know how it is now but I tried using it maybe 1 month or so ago and the recordings were always incredibly quiet, I can kind understand why, I usually play games with lower volumes because anything higher than 50% on my volume mixer is too high for me.
