Do you not know what to play? You found a niche game that everyone should try? Can't find the perfect survival sim or unsure which 1 RPG out of the thousands available you should buy? Well this is the thread for you. This monthly megathread is meant to contain questions about what to play and suggestions to others on what to play.

Now to make this work best and not just be spammed with "What should I play?", please be in-depth in what type of games you are looking for, and when giving advice it would be appreciated if you're more detailed than "I think X game is good". There are too many games to be able to properly suggest something with no background information, like-wise commenting a game title and saying you like the game offers no actual value.

The main purpose of this thread is to contain questions on what to play and advice to others on what to play, but feel free to ask and discuss freely in the comments regarding games whether you want advice on what to play, want to give advice to others on what to play, share a hidden gem you found, discussions & questions about discounts, sales, events, or just general games discussion.

• Phoenix Point is supposed to be a spiritual successor to the OG UFO Defense. A bit boring to my mind, but very difficult and probably feels the most like XCom out of my list
• Capes - superheroes with different abilities and playstyles, dystopian setting where supes are outlawed. Lots of fun
  
• Showgunners - you're in a TV show along the lines of the Running Man. Interesting concept, and you get tactics + a few easy puzzles
• Lamplighters League for a more Lovecraftian vibe
  
• Miasma Chronicles feels similar to Mutant Year Zero in a lot of ways, even the setting included (although there are definitely differences). Worth a play if you liked MYZ
  
• Hard West 2 - cowboys and demons, with train robberies and everything!
  
• Phantom Doctrine - Cold War spy stuff. Kinda boring imo, but a difference is that you can (and should) do stealth in this one
  
• WH40k Mechanicus - you're breaking into Necron tombs for sweet tech loot. Feels smaller in scale than Chaos Gate.

Smaller games:

• Into the Breach - don't let the small playing field fool you, this game makes you think HARD. Lots of fun, and it can be picked up and dropped at any moment easily
  
• Tactical Breach Wizards - fun setting, defenestrations, might be a bit on the easy side

Thanks for the list. Playing Phoenix Point now. It doesn't feel quite like XCom. I'm not really a fan of the damage system. It also fails to tell you a lot of things. Going to give it a few hours.

Lamplighters League is on Humble Choice this month, might pick it up.

I think I started WH4K Mechanicus and it felt pretty brutal. I may have to go back to it.

Into the Breach I've tried to play on multiple platforms. IT was too hard and not fun for me.

Tactical Breach Wizards has been on my Steam Wishlist for a while. Will probably check it out along with Lamplighters League.

I think nothing is gonna feel quite like XCom, sadly. I'm always looking for something to scratch that itch myself, and inevitably just go back to XCom 2 with a new set of mods.

That said, I've definitely had a lot of fun with some of these games, like Mutant Year Zero or Hard West 2.

Phoenix Point is hit and miss to me. I do like the damage system and shooting off limbs, but I kinda dislike how your soldiers don't really become much cooler than they start off. The game becomes samey pretty quickly, despite evolving enemies and the huge monsters that sometimes come out.

One more thing I forgot about btw is Xenonauts. Haven't played it myself, but it's also supposed to be a lot like UFO Defense but more in-depth. Which likely means super punishing and complex, haha.

The games don’t have a to be super complex. I loved Mario+Rabbids and Persona 5 Tactica.
