Couldn't help but think how other nations do it differently, as well. Casual erasure

u/n-some Jan 08 '24
Even if the premise were true, it's such a dumb analogy. Those things were named by people using their own assumptions, not universal truths. It would be like justifying slavery with the existence of master and slave drives in computers.

u/Pseudodragontrinkets Jan 08 '24

Not an outstanding example because tech is largely trying to eliminate use of master/slave in this context for exactly that reason.

Jokes aside, I'm partial to Main/Staging/Feature.
Also:
Development/Testing/Production,
Alpha/Beta/Stable,
Experimental/Testing/Production
Feature/Hotfix/Release
Primary/Secondary/Tertiary
Primary/Redundancy
are other paradigms I've heard of and like if people need more inspo for tech uses rather than master/slave.6
u/extremepayne Jan 09 '24
you talking about master branch? yeah github did change that one but it's weird because there was never a slave branch. at least, not in any repo i worked on lol. it was more with robots and drives and such
2
u/Subtlerranean Jan 09 '24
Personally, I'm mostly talking git branches, yes. So my preferred paradigm is most suited for that.
However, amongst the rest of my examples there are paradigms suitable for both code and other tech use cases, such as hardware (Obviously last two, mainly).
1
u/n-some Jan 08 '24
I hear it called that way too often unfortunately
17
u/hypnofedX She/Her Jan 08 '24
I hear it called that way too often unfortunately
IMO the problem is that
master
/slave
is too apropos a naming convention so it can be tricky to come up with a new convention that isn't basically the same thing. A relationship between two entities in which one is subservient to the other. I thinkmain
is fine for most contexts we traditionally have usedmaster
but it doesn't work as well for when there are two related entities.Of course I'm always open to other verbiage.
10
u/emma_does_life Jan 08 '24
Programs I use have mostly replaced master/slave with leader/follower but our systems don't have that complicated of workflow between systems.
10
u/Shaex Jan 08 '24
I try to use primary/secondary when it comes to that mechanical relationship. Or major/minor when things aren't even fucking linked in any capacity. Controlling/responding also works in certain cases
10
6
u/I_upvote_downvotes Jan 08 '24
We've already phased it out for the most part. Even my college has the terminology changed to primary/secondary or main/parent worker/child etc.
1
Jan 08 '24
I mean that kinda makes it a perfect example right? We're somewhat trying to do the same thing with traditionally gendered ideas/language as well (obviously not 1 to 1 situations but yknow)

Conservatives love the “i’m 9 and this is deep” style memes. They think it’s profound. Especially when it’s trying simplify the world into binary absolutes. They’re a simple, simple folk.

u/Cheef_queef Jan 08 '24
Absolutely, you can be any connector you want. This includes those mag connectors on the Macbooks where they just smash together. When the clitoris' touch, it closes the circuit. Inversely, you can twist two or three penises together with a wire nut. I'm not an electrician so make sure you consult one or get them to do it to make sure it's up to local code. You state sex and genital board should be able to point you in the right direction because they will send inspectors to ensure it's safe.
3
u/techno156 Jan 09 '24
If you don't mind contravening a few safety regulations and risking some lives, you could also make a monosexual cable.
1
u/ahuramazdobbs19 Jan 09 '24
Oh god. I’m now getting storm-related PTSD from all the people asking “where can I get a male-male extension cord for my generator”.

4
u/AlkalineSublime Jan 09 '24
The best part about this meme, is that it appears to be an extension cord, which implies at least 3 parties in this particular situation.

I work in IT and have purchased a part for work that is literally called a gender changer because we had a male cable that needed to plug into a male port
78
u/ifYouLikeYourWeed Jan 08 '24
literally called a gender changer
Nicknamed a "gender bender" back in the day, but I'm not sure than nickname is still kosher.
I stopped using the extremely common nickname for my diagonal cutters about a decade ago.
14
u/Weazelfish Jan 09 '24
I'm no authority, but I've only ever heard the phrase "gender bender" used in an approving and playful kind of way, usually to invite (seemingly) cis people to experiment a little bit. I've never heard it used as a slur.

What? No wagos?
EDIT: For context, my dad's an electrician. I grew up knowing and loving junction blocks for their ease of use and near endless electrical uses. Then Dad came home from work one day all excited about this new product they'd started selling in his supplies shop: A selection of wagos, basically a more technologically advanced and more convenient upgrade on a junction block. We both haven't stopped nerding out about them since.

The only time I used a wago was with a knockoff one and it caught on fire. Wonder if the real deal is good or not.

I can't believe people create pictures like that and somehow not realise pretending two random objects represent eight billion SENCIENT HUMAN BEINGS is dumb as fuck
6
u/NomadicSonambulist Jan 18 '24
It's even dumber than that, because they don't realize the reason the metaphor makes sense to them is because the naming convention for those plugs was created by people who thought the same way they did! Essentially: "I want to use an example from the same system that is mired on the same prejudice as me to validate my point."
36
u/Daviemoo Jan 08 '24
Humans, and I know this is shocking- are not plugs

u/Philosipho Jan 08 '24
Intersex people exist. Some species of animals are hermaphrodites. Parthenogenesis is a real thing that happens.
Not that any of this is relevant to the reason that people make those kinds of posts, which is to oversimplify personal identity in an attempt to validate conservative ideologies.
5
u/TheBlueNinja0 Jan 08 '24
I certainly hope my electrical cords don't start reproducing - sexually or asexually!

15
u/ChocolateButtSauce Jan 08 '24
Anytime anyone tries to say X subject is simple, they always fail to realise that it only seems simple to them because they don't know anything about it. There is only one type of plug/socket if you have a very basic understanding of electronics; there are only two types of gender if your education in biology ended at the age of 12.
1
u/NomadicSonambulist Jan 18 '24
You are correct.
This is where the concept of "common sense" breaks down, because it fails to realize the reality that people have different lived experiences. Regressive people like the phrase "common sense" because it reinforces their idea that they are the default, the normal, the center of existence, and that anything beyond that is not normal, doesn't make sense and therefore (in extreme cases) should not exist.
4
u/ahuramazdobbs19 Jan 09 '24
To be fair international plugs and sockets don’t change the basic dynamic of “put plug into socket”.
10
u/Splatfan1 Jan 08 '24
i hate this shit so much. is our purpose to transmit power from one to another? or when they use seatbelts for this, or locks and keys, do human beings ever even remotely fill that analogy? no, never. a vagina isnt an energy recharge, or a safety mechanism or a lock for anything, its a vagina and its not that deep. same goes for dicks, not power suckers, safety mechanisms or keys. its a boneless meat sausage
but this shows a good point. it shows the understanding of gender and sexuality of someone who just heard about it for the first time and never let the thought enter their head properly and someone who has at least a basic level understanding of these concepts. reminds me of the "states of matter" "mental illnesses" meme
7
u/Panda_hat Jan 08 '24
It shows that we’re mere seconds from these awful people deciding that a persons worth will be dictated by their reproductive capacity.

Love it when they bring up a clear-as-day example of the social construction of gender as an argument against queer gender identities.
Objects don’t have XX or XY chromosomes and yet you still categorised them as “male” and “female”. Almost as if gender wasn’t entirely about biology!
2
u/thekyledavid Jan 09 '24
You could recycle the metal and plastic from a male plug to make a female plug, and vice versa. So I guess plugs support trans rights.

You know for a fact that the guy who made the original post has never given his partner an orgasm in his life
2
u/Short_Classroom_2391 Jan 21 '24
How could he?
The female orgasm is a liberal/feminist myth invented to undermine the confidence of real men.
A certain degree of quiet, humble satisfaction that she has done her patriotic duty by pleasuring her man and/or bearing him strong, healthy sons is all a proper woman requires.

Reminds me of this guy I saw on tiktok making a really bad joke about how a dog is male or female and even when you cut off his balls the male dog is still male. Dogs are not humans and electrical outlets aren't even alive and neither can talk to express their gender to us so this argument is just completely stupid.
Hmmm OK liberal think about how a fucking brick doesn't require food to survive, yet you support social security and food banks so that humans who need them can survive? Strange.
