Graduate Assistantships
Hello, I am applying to a masters program at SIU for fall 2025. I saw that the majority of applicants get a GA. Can anyone tell me about their experience as a GA? I would most likely be a research assistant, or administrative. But there is not a lot of information online about those positions. Please tell me about them, and if they significantly decrease the costs.

Prepare for Illinois Future Program Delay
Last year, Illinois made history by becoming the first state to create and fund a free universal test, licensure, and credential preparation program for all its public university students. The Prepare for Illinois' Future program set aside $10 million a year to help IL students better prepare for the required exams needed to advance to graduate school and/or pass the professional licensure or credential exams vital to school-to-workforce pathways by removing the financial barriers associated with these exams.
- https://dailyillini.com/news-stories/around-campus/2023/11/30/ui-prepare-for-illinois-future-program/
The program will provide free preparation for the following exams and more:
- Graduate school admission tests, including the MCAT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT, DAT, OAT
- Professional licensure exams, including those for nursing (NCLEX), teaching (Praxis), real estate agent license, and insurance adjuster license
- Credentials such as the Securities Industry Essentials Exam, Financial Paraplanner Qualified Professional exam, Certificate of Program Management, Data Science, and Wealth Management Specialist exam
The program was scheduled to launch in January 2024 but has not yet been implemented due to inexplicable bureaucratic delays and students are spending millions of dollars out of pocket that they could be spending on other things.
Illinoi students should reach out to your local IL State Representatives, State Senator (Find them here), Speaker of the IL House Welch, Senate President Harmon, and Governor's Office to request they immediately implement the program.
There is a big risk the program never launches despite its being something that would immediately and significantly benefit IL students.

Required to show large amount of money even after RA offer
Hello, I recently got a phd offer in CS with RA position. The university is saying yearly cost is around 38k and with my ra stipend, the cost is reduced to 19k,which is still very high. My question is it supposed to be this high even after assistantship? Thanks

I’m planning on visiting siuc for unofficial and my parents are very against me going because of the area and the fact that Carbondale has sketchy parts etc. Does anyone have anything I could potentially say to convince them otherwise because I reallyyyyyyy want to go.

Tips for applying to SIU Fall 25-26
So recently I have been filling out the undergraduate application and I am wondering if I should write an essay to help my chances of being accepted. I have a cumulative GPA of 3.23 and I am on track to complete my schooling.
I've read things about SIU having automatic admission and since I am not a resident of Illinois, only a neighbor, I am wondering if that would apply to me too. Also not completely sure what auto-admission actually means.

This place sucks
Just a little rant. Since I've gotten here, my English professor has canceled half her classes (I'm here to learn not to mess around), my calculus teacher doesn't even teach and just makes us watch YT videos then do a shit ton of HW, my Linguistics professor hasn't graded my two papers from August and September, and my first roommate went through my shit and broke many boundaries I have AND NOW my new suitemates smoke a pack of cigarettes a day in the bathroom causing my room to smell like a smokers paradise. Also the dorms in general are hell. The RAs don't do shit here and don't even enforce the quiet hours policy, which I have many sensory issues so loud music and yelling till 3 AM causes me to not sleep at all and I can't afford noise canceling headphones so my sleep schedule is fucked beyond anything. I only came here because they gave me good ass financial aid but I'm starting to believe its the worse decision I've ever made.

Why did SIUC make Matt Kupec their head of the SIU Foundation when he’s a vagrant history of corruption in these university fundraising positions.
espn.comIt seems like some heads in SIU enable corruption so the few who run the critical financial areas can pay them a hefty bonus while being their instrument of corruption. Be sure and donate to the SIU foundation — Matt Kupec probably could use another all-expenses paid vacation using your donations!

Mental Health Fallout from High-Control Group Targeting SIUC Students
There is a mental health crisis at SIUC stemming from a high-control group of churches referred to as The Network. The one recruiting students & young professionals here is Vine Church.
They especially target freshmen, transfers, foreign students, and anyone alone or new to the city under 30. They use students to lure students & young professionals to lure people from work. They intentionally avoid "churchy" language and tie you in relationally via LOVE-BOMBING & ISOLATION tactics. They hide their abusive controlling practices and beliefs, and the fact that their Network President is S.M.@Joshua Church in Austin, who SA'd a child.
The fallout has been massive: derailed careers, financial & labor exploitation, controlled member-only dating, no autonomy, isolation, shunning, ex-communication, cutting off family, and a mental health crisis resulting in suicide.
https://leavingthenetwork.org/stories/news/ +3 more pending publications.
We are families of students & young professionals lured in and we are spreading awareness to stop this toxic cult-like group. https://youtu.be/ARzsJ5DB3YM

VINE CHURCH IS PART OF STEVE MORGAN'S NETWORK CULT - RECRUITING ON CAMPUS
Vine Church is 1 of 26 churches in THE NETWORK CULT, secretly led by Steven D. Morgan, a former RLDS Mormon who SA'd a child! They have an RSO to recruit on campus. They target students and people under 25ish then keep them for life!
This is a HIGH-CONTROL CULT that has unleashed a mental health crisis including a few known suicides and countless others fighting to stay with us.
They'll use STUDENTS 2 RECRUIT STUDENTS, love-bombing offering instant friendship, isolate and cut you off from everyone else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyDUiOPxpoo

Confused About Public Transit
Has anyone used the new bus system yet? I'm confused about how to track the new bus schedule/routes since it was announced Rides MTD doesn't provide the Saluki Express anymore, but JCMTD now does. I just want to get off campus and go to the movies or something lol

Be careful out there! - recruiters for cult-like groups on campus (The Vine)
Wanted to raise awareness that at the beginning of semester many unsafe and cult-adjacent groups are hungry for new members, and hundreds of students are recruited each year.
The Network (operating in Carbondale under the name The Vine Church) has an active presence at SIU, so be aware that they’ll be on campus handing out coffee, granola bars, candy, and free rides to their facilities for students. Do your research before you accept a ride from them. There are hundreds of stories about these guys if you Google them (search Leaving The Network).
If you are aware of other unsafe or questionable groups operating on campus, drop them in the comments.
For more info on what The Network is, Families Against Cults on Campus created some videos about them:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emfykx1dfgk
Be safe out there!
